Good start, but could be a lot better.

I liked the first episode of schitt's creeek, I like the style and Catherine o'hard and Eugene Levy are great but I think it has a lot more potential than what's done in this premiere.

Promising Start
mycannonball24 November 2021
After having multiple friends recommend this show to me, I'm giving it a go (committed to watching the first season). The first episode has a promising start with silly characters that play well off each other but who also feel distinctly different from one another.

For Heaven's Sake

Warning: Spoilers
For those with attention deficit disorder, go ahead and judge an entire show on a single twenty minute episode. Unfortunately, every series has to set up the situation, the characters, and, in this case, a unique setting. No, there were few laughs because we are introduced to the pain these people are going through. Granted, it is hard to feel sympathy, but their characters will drive the story from now on.

For those who didn't like this episode

The first episode and season is the weakest of the show. It gets increasingly better the more you watch.

From Filthy Rich to Filth
aherdofbeautifulwildponies28 December 2022
Warning: Spoilers
The premise of Shitt's Creek - as well as the attitudes of the main characters - appears as if in direct relation to Arrested Development (2003). A younger Canadian cousin of the cult American sitcom, if you will. Like the Bluth family, the Roses find themselves in rapidly reduced circumstances, losing everything: a mansion decorated after the Sistine Chapel, antique furniture, questionable art, designer bags, jewelry, the understanding of their place in the world. Unlike the Bluth family, the Roses are victims of fraud, rather than criminals; that is a crucial difference. As early on as the first episode, there is a suggestion that the central figures of Shitt's Creek are, of course, grotesquely entitled - but also nice.

The impression of relative warmth of the characters might be due to the fact that one cannot help but compare Moira Rose (played by Catherine O'Hara) to Lucille Bluth (Jessica Walter) and Johnny Rose (Eugene Levy) to George Bluth Sr. (Jeffrey Tambor). Why, the Rose parents do not appear openly antagonistic towards each other! The same cannot be said about their children, David (Dan Levy) and Alexis (Annie Murphy). Seemingly in their late twenties or early thirties, the siblings are a case of, pardon my continued references, arrested development.

Catherine O'Hara and Daniel Levy - okay, also Eugene Levy's eyebrows - leave the strongest immediate impression. (The same can be said for Chris Elliott as Roland Schitt, the mayor of the provincial town where Roses have now relocated, but only because you recognise him as the butler from Scary Movie 2 (2001).)

I did not laugh once
neskire28 September 2020
I heard that this show won many Emmys. A friend said they loved it. I hope it gets better because I did not find anything funny. Schadenfreude is they key here perhaps? It reminds me of Avenue 5 with rich people thrown into a bad situation who bicker about trivialities. So far, this show is not my cup of tea. I will give it a couple more episodes.

Rich Family Lives In A Motel
vivianla27 September 2020
Warning: Spoilers
A very rich family has all their property taken away. The government takes their belongings. They have been left with one property however - a town the father bought as a joke back in the 90s called Schitt's Creek.

The family has this air by habit of being professional, luxurious and needy.

The rich family is disgusted by the state of their motel. The brother and sister have to share the one room with two beds. The brother retches at the sight of the shower, bathroom and beds.

At a diner Alexis announces she is leaving with her bf when he comes to pick her up. The mother tells her she did not raise her sweet little girl to be a prostitute.

The man the father swore at took off the doors to their rooms. The family is very materialistic.

Either I'm getting depressed and not finding anything funny, or this show is bad.
travinitrav1 January 2022
I did not laugh one time during the entire episode. And I have laughed at many other sitcoms so I dont think my sense of humor is the issue here. Literally nothing funny happened the entire run time. I saw a bunch of horrible people being punished by the government and while their reactions may have been realistic (I've never known a rich person) I didnt find any of it entertaining or humorous. I guess this is what happens when sitcoms finally run out of ideas. They copied Arrested Development but forgot to fill it with actual characters.

Nobody does anything interesting or worthy of screen time. And the children in particular are horrible caricatures of spoiled idiots. Its not entertaining, just irritating. How did this show set records for Emmy wins?

Obnoxious & stale. The drama is boring. Undeserving of its praise.
