NBCUniversal has rebranded its international production business to better align with Universal Studio Group and sister studios UCP, Universal Television and Universal Television Alternative Studio.
Under the rebrand, NBCUniversal International Studios will now be known as Universal International Studios. Variety understands that the change is purely cosmetic and little else is changing structurally on the international side. The shift solely impacts the production operations, and distribution group NBCUniversal International Global Distribution will remain titled as such.
The U.K.-based Universal International Studios houses a number of production companies, including “Downton Abbey” and “The Last Kingdom” producer Carnival Films, “Made in Chelsea” outfit Monkey Kingdom and “We Are Lady Parts” producers Working Title Television. The company also has a joint production venture in place with Working Title Television and Heyday Television. It also owns an equity stake in “Family Law” producers Lark Productions.

Production and distribution powerhouse All3Media has acquired leading natural history producer Silverback Films.
Founded in 2012 by Alastair Fothergill and Keith Scholey (right), Silverback Films is the U.K.’s top natural history producer outside of the BBC Natural History Unit, and creates wildlife content for film and TV. Recent credits include the documentary “David Attenborough: A Life on Our Planet”, which had a worldwide theatrical release at the end of September before launching on Netflix.
The deal is a tremendous coup for All3Media, which has been on the market for more production acquisitions in the last two years. The company’s portfolio spans 28 companies around the world, with key titles including “Fleabag,” “Call the Midwife” and “Liar.” While All3Media has a number of reputable unscripted production outfits in its wheelhouse, the acquisition of Silverback puts it firmly in the natural history space as a major contender going forward.

Long-time NBCUniversal executive Jeff Wachtel has left the company, Variety has confirmed. He most recently served as president of NBCUniversal International Studios.
Variety understands that Wachtel’s departure follows some issues pertaining to respect in the workplace, after which it was agreed that Wachtel would leave the company. It’s believed a search for his replacement is underway.
Wachtel served for nearly two decades at NBCUniversal, crossing the pond to London in 2018 to oversee NBCU International’s portfolio of production companies and manage the development of formats and content partnerships for the Peacock. Replacing Michael Edelstein as head of the business’s international TV strategy, Wachtel’s arrival in the U.K. was met with much fanfare, and he became a regular face at local conferences like the Royal Television Society events.

Silverback Films made a splash last year with Emmy-winning natural history hit “Our Planet,” which quickly became Netflix’s most-watched docuseries soon after launching.
Narrated by Sir David Attenborough, the ground-breaking series mixed jaw-dropping scenes of nature with an urgent reminder to viewers that everything they are witnessing on screen is imperilled by human activity.
This month, Silverback returns with feature documentary “David Attenborough: A Life On Our Planet.”
Billed as Attenborough’s witness statement to the world, it documents the famed 94-year-old naturalist’s life in filmmaking, the destructive impact of humans on the natural world — and his vision for change to save the planet.
Backed by the World Wildlife Fund (WWF), the film has a theatrical release around the world from Sept. 28, and will then launch globally on Netflix this autumn, and is also accompanied by a book.

A new Disneynature documentary from directors Alastair Fothergill and Jeff Wilson — they also collaborated on the studio’s bless-the-beasts-and children docs Monkey Kingdom and Chimpanzee — Penguins puts the focus on Steve, an Adélie penguin coming of age during a freezing Antarctic spring. Yup, there is a cute overload; penguins are as adorable as hell. Steve’s 100-mile journey from his natural ocean habitat to the breeding grounds on shore does not skimp on trials and travails, which include nest building and making a life for himself. It’s no easy ride.

Documentaries are rarely big money makers, but we talk about them as having the power to influence change and motivate people to action in a way even narrative films cannot. So when a documentary does make a splash at the box office, it’s an even bigger surprise. And the Mister Rogers doc is well on its way to cracking this list of the top 15 grossing documentaries at the box office. The top of this weekend's box office looks a lot like last weekend as the top three films remain the same, once again headlined by The Fate of the Furious as it closes in on $1 billion worldwide. As for the weekend's new releases, Disney's Born in China topped the list with the best start for a Disneynature title since the $10.6 million opening for 2012's Chimpanzee. Otherwise, WB's Unforgettable, Open Road's The Promise, Cinelou's Phoenix Forgotten and A24's Free Fire all under-performed. At #1 for a second weekend in a row is Universal's The Fate of the Furious, which performed mostly as expected, dropping 61% in its second weekend and bringing in an estimated $38.6 million as its domestic cume now climbs to $163.6 million. Internationally, the film continued its impressive overseas run bringing in an estimated $163.4 million from 65 territories as its overseas total balloons to $744.8 million for a global cume that stands at $908.4 million.

After winning the Oscar for 2014’s “Big Hero 6,” producer Roy Conli was lured to what seems to be a far-flung project: a Disneynature doc, “Born in China,” which explores the life cycles of wild pandas and other native Chinese wildlife. However, he said that it was less about the animals and more about their collective capacity to communicate complex emotions and ideas.
“I’ve always loved the structure of multiple stories,” said Conli, a longtime Disney Animation executive who famously mounted the premiere of “Angels in America” at the Mark Taper Forum in 1992. “There are multiple characters that you need to fall in love with, and they will add up to one story. That was the same with this. You had five species, but you concentrated on three animal families.”

Here’s something to remember next time you go to a big trivia fund-raising night. If there’s a movie or Oscar category, one of the questions may be: “What film maker (or producer) has won the most Academy Awards?”. The answer is (and will be for a long time to come) Walt Disney. Now, as you jot down that name, you may think that all that gold was netted by his animation work, the classic features and short subjects. Well, a lot of it, but not all. From 1948 to 1960 Disney dominated the Best Live-Action Short Subject category with his “True-Life Adventures” series. Lots of baby boomers may be familiar with them, not from theatrical showings (usually paired with the re-release of those animated features), but from that NBC Sunday night staple, “Walt Disney’s Wonderful World of Color”. Several shorts would be edited together for the hour-long shows. The...

Saturday Am Update: The Fate of the Furious is right on pace with expectations, bringing in an estimated $11.2 million on Friday, en route to a $35-38 million second weekend. Meanwhile, the film will remain the #1 film in the world this weekend as its international total as of last night is $636.3 million and the international weekend estimate is currently $171 million from 65 territories as it looks to top $910 million by Sunday and will cross $1 billion worldwide next week. Of the new releases, it looks like Disneynature's Born in China will lead the way after it brought in $1.59 million on Friday, on its way to an opening weekend three-day around $4.6 million or so. Opening day audiences gave the film an "A-" CinemaScore, which is pretty much typical for these features. Warner's Unforgettable is proving to be anything but as it brought in a meager $1.67 million on Friday and is looking at a $4.4 million opening weekend.

No dramatic tension here: “The Fate of the Furious” (Universal) again will be the top box-office performer in its second weekend, continuing its worldwide push to over $1 billion. Even with a steep fall (likely 55% to 60%), it could end up grossing double what we expect from the five new releases combined.
The next two weeks will see eight new mainstream releases, an unusually high number, and all are standalone, non-franchise entries. That’s rare these days. But unlike “Get Out,” “Hidden Figures,” and “La La Land” — three original movies that grossed $150 million or more at home in the last five months — none of the upcoming titles should do more than minor business.

Narrated by John Krasinski (“13 Hours: The Secret Soldiers of Benghazi,” NBC’s “The Office,” “Amazon’s “Jack Ryan”), Disneynature’s new True Life Adventure film “Born In China” takes an epic journey into the wilds of China where few people have ever ventured. Following the stories of three animal families, the film transports audiences to some of the most extreme environments on Earth to witness some of the most intimate moments ever captured in a nature film. A doting panda bear mother guides her growing baby as she begins to explore and seek independence. A two-year-old golden monkey who feels displaced by his new baby sister joins up with a group of free-spirited outcasts. And a mother snow leopard—an elusive animal rarely caught on camera—faces the very real drama of raising her two cubs in one of the harshest and most unforgiving environments on the planet.

Since any New York City cinephile has a nearly suffocating wealth of theatrical options, we figured it’d be best to compile some of the more worthwhile repertory showings into one handy list. Displayed below are a few of the city’s most reliable theaters and links to screenings of their weekend offerings — films you’re not likely to see in a theater again anytime soon, and many of which are, also, on 35mm. If you have a chance to attend any of these, we’re of the mind that it’s time extremely well-spent.

Normally around this time of year, Disney would be gearing up to release another one of their nature documentaries under their DisneyNature banner. Last year, we got Monkey Kingdom, and this year we'll be getting their latest offering, Born In China. But what if Disney went a little more, shall we say, exotic with their subject matter? Well then you'd probably see something like the Jurassic Park inspired Raptor documentary shown in the parody video below. As you'd expect, this video is a prank, coming from Mashable Watercooler. However, don't let the comedic nature take away from the fact that this is a sharply constructed parody of a typical DisneyNature trailer. In "Raptors," we follow Littletail . a young Raptor born to the wilds of Jurassic Park. From birth to young womanhood, she embarks on a journey 65 million years in the making, as she learns to follow her instincts, and her...

The life of a troop of macaques is explored via the travails of a female monkey. And the film is narrated by a woman. These little things have a big impact.

Note: This is not a “review” of Monkey Kingdom! It is simply an examination of how well or how poorly it represents women. (A movie that represents women well can still be a terrible film; a movie that represents women poorly can still be a great film.) Read my review of Monkey Kingdom.

Simplistic, but a charming and child-friendly introduction to our cousins in the wild that no zoo could provide, with a monkey heroine whom kids will cheer. I’m “biast” (pro): monkeys!
I’m “biast” (con): nothing

Disneynature, the Mouse’s nature-documentary arm, continues its quest to introduce kids to our cousins in the wild with Monkey Kingdom, a charming if simplistic film that gets us up close to animals in their own environment in a way that not even the most sophisticated zoo could ever achieve. In the Sri Lankan jungle lives “Maya,” a macaque monkey born at the bottom of her troop’s social hierarchy, where she is subject to such injustices as being bullied by her higher-ranking neighbors — even the babies! — and missing out on all the best food treats — tasty mushrooms! — which are invariably gone by...

Monkey Kingdom is the latest from DisneyNature. It’s a documentary narrated by Tina Fey that follows a newborn monkey and its mother as they struggle to survive within the competitive social hierarchy of the Temple Troop, a dynamic group of monkeys who live in ancient ruins found deep in the storied jungles of South Asia.
When Melissa Howland reviewed Monkey Kingdom at We Are Movie Geeks, she wrote: “Once again, (filmmakers) Linfield, Fothergill and crew capture some of the most spectacular images of the jungle and its’ inhabitants that most humans would never have the opportunity to see. Composer Harry Gregson-Williams brings the ancient ruins and jungles to life with his score. As with the previous Disneynature features, the end credits give audiences a glimpse into what the actual filming was like (monkeys taking selfies, anyone?). Monkey Kingdom is spellbinding.” Read all of Mellissa’s review Here

Fourth time is the charm? It certainly seems to be for Furious 7, which held on to the first-place spot for a fourth week in a row. While it is now only bringing in a fraction of its opening day income (an estimated $18.3 million), it has become the highest grossing film of the franchise and a top contender for the year…although it will have stiff competition next weekend in The Avengers: Age of Ultron, which has already had a massive overseas opening. But oddly, despite its success, Furious 7 is leading a massive trend this week at the box office…namely, a refusal to release its production costs. In fact, seven films out of the top ten have no budget numbers to compare…including what will likely remain one of the top ten grossing films of 2015.

For the fourth straight weekend, the newest entry in the Fast & Furious franchise, James Wan’s Furious 7, took the top spot at the box office, adding another $18.3 million to its total earnings so far to bring its total domestic earnings to over $320 million, over 1.5 times that of 2015’s second highest domestic earner to date, Kenneth Branagh’s Cinderella. The film was joined in the top three by a repeat performer and a new entry, as the Kevin James-starring Paul Blart: Mall Cop 2 remained steady in second place with a total of $15.5 million. Rounding out the top three, however, was the Blake Lively-Ellen Burstyn starring The Age of Adaline, which garnered the third spot with $13.4 million in its opening weekend.
Among the rest of the box office, the horror feature Unfriended saw the biggest revenue decrease, dropping over 60% from its opening weekend gross to land in fifth place with $6.2 million.

Everyone knew "Furious 7" would be big. But $300 million in less than three weeks big?
This weekend, the car-chase sequel earned an estimated $29.1 million, with a comfortable lead of $5.1 million over its closest rival, new comedy "Paul Blart: Mall Cop 2." New horror film "Unfriended" was third, with an estimated $16.0 million. And Disney's annual Earth Day-timed nature documentary, "Monkey Kingdom," opened in seventh place with an estimated $4.7 million. So, again, the seventh installment of an action franchise, in its third week in theaters, still earned nearly $30 million, enough to beat all competitors new and old. After 17 days of release, it's earned $294.4 million, so it should break $300 million in the next couple of days.
How does that happen?
Part of it is a testimony to the strengths of the franchise, and of this installment in particular, as was clear when the film opened two weekends ago. Indeed, this weekend, it slipped just 50 percent from last week,...
