[This is entry #1 from my set diary for Fox's upcoming cinematic adaptation of the Ubisoft video game Assassin's Creed. In this entry, I'll focus on the set itself, the design elements, and some of the filmmaking philosophy that's gone into this ambitious adaptation.]
It was a characteristically rainy, gray, dreary day in London as I sat down in a small van to get shuttled to the set of Assassin’S Creed. Full disclosure, this was going to be my first-ever set visit. While I’ve gotten offers before, this was the first time I was actually able to take a studio up on one. I remember there was a euphoric glaze that came over my brain as we pulled away from the city and started heading off into the suburbs to visit Pinewood Studios in Leavesden. For a lifelong film nerd like me, getting to go to Pinewood is like getting to visit the Emerald City or something. My mind was racing with the questions I’d ask Michael Fassbender and co., while also trying to remain open to taking in every moment of this experience.
Suddenly, there it was. We drove under...

Big Brother's Helen Wood has revealed that she regrets nominating latest evictee Jade Lynch last week.
The Time Warp housemate, writing her latest Daily Star column from inside the house, also condemned Brian Belo's "aggressive" behaviour.
Big Brother Day 40: Who had a good day, and who had a bad day?
"His aggressive behaviour has been absolutely shocking," she said. "He's thrown shoes, banged walls, been aggressive verbally - the guy's lost his hinges.
"He's trying to hard to act like this Big Bro superhero, it's so dull and transparent. Remember, put this into perspective, this was about nominating Jade when the whole premise of the show is N.O.M.I.N.A.T.I.N.G.
"He had the audacity to blame Marc for her exit, despite it mainly being down to Nikki. Shamefully, I participated too by listening to Nikki's opinion. Never once regretted...

Closing Night: Goodnight Mommy the debut feature film by Severin Fiala and Veronika Franz, will screen at 8:30 p.m. on the 29th and is a nightmarish vision of familial dread when twin brothers believe their cosmetically altered mother is literally not the woman she used to be.

Saturday marked the third day of Toronto After Dark 2014, and as is customary on the weekend, there were three separate screening blocks (as opposed to the standard two during the weekdays). Saturday at Tadff also usually means Zombie Appreciation Night, so you generally know that you are going to get at least two films featuring the undead. This year, both of the feature films were completely sold out, marking a running total of six sold out screenings for the year already. Huge congratulations to the festival organizers for making 2014 such a record-breaking year (and it’s only three days in)!
The day kicked off with Shorts After Dark, which is the festival’s International Short Film showcase. This gives the programmers a chance to feature their favorite non-Canadian short submissions, and while all of them aren’t usually great, there are always a handful of them that are worth your time,...

The luxurious banquet hall in Toronto’s Royal York hotel was electric with excitement as Tiff senior programmers including Steve Gravestock and Agata Smoluch Del Sorbo announced the robust lineup of Canadian films (several world preems) at this year’s Tiff plus the 40+ short titles (out of an astounding 840 short films — an increase of over 200 titles from last year) that will screen at the prestigious festival. With features populating almost every section at the fest, among the headliner items from English Canada, Cairo Time‘s Ruba Nadda returns to the fest with October Gale, while also world preeming is Bang Bang Baby — Jeffrey St. Jules marks his feature film debut with a film that is equal parts Rocky Horror Picture Show and early Cronenberg. Starring Jane Levy of the recent About Alex, it revolves around a small-town teenager in the ’60s whose dream of becoming a famous singer is dashed...
