When Carter (Thomas Jane) loads and ejects the shotgun shells they are red. Then Sade (Laurence Fishburne) identifies the shotgun as a .20 gauge. .20 gauge shot shells are required to have a yellow tube and haven't been sold in any other color for many years.
Sade's pistol is referred to as a .45. Actually, it's a Beretta 92 which is a 9mm. As noted earlier, the red shotgun cartridges are 12 gauge; 20 gauge would be yellow.
When we first see Officer Baker driving the patrol car and talking on the radio the view from the passenger seat shows there is no key in the vehicle ignition.
It's tough to see, but when Carter loads the 20 gauge shotgun both times, the primer on the shell is already dimpled which indicates that the round has already been hit by a firing pin and therefore would not "go off" in the shotgun he loaded it into.
Easier to see is Bird attempting to shoot Sade (01:17:30) and demonstrating that it would not "go off". It went "click". Spotting something that is pointed out in the movie isn't a Goof.
