Karen Pittman (The Morning Show) and The Wire alum Wood Harris are set as leads opposite Michael Cooper Jr. and Lovie Simone in Forever, Netflix’s upcoming drama series from Girlfriends and Being Mary Jane creator Mara Brock Akil.
A reimagining of Judy Blume’s influential — and controversial — 1975 novel Forever… for a new generation, the series adaptation tells the epic love story of two Black teens, Keisha Clark (Simone) and Justin Edwards (Cooper Jr.) exploring romance and their identities through the awkward journey of being each other’s firsts, set in Los Angeles, 2018.
Pittman plays Dawn, a college-educated, top executive in corporate finance with an easy elegance that belies her loving but paranoid form of parenting, Justin’s (Cooper Jr.) mother Dawn might be strict at times, but it’s always out of love. She’s worked hard to give him the things he needs to succeed in life and...

We’ve seen Groundhog’s Day as a slasher with Happy Death Day, It’s a Wonderful Life as a slasher with It’s a Wonderful Knife, Freaky Friday as a slasher with Freaky, and Back to the Future as a slasher with Totally Killer. Next in the “this movie, but it’s a slasher” line-up is Departing Seniors, which mixes the high school slasher set-up with elements from Stephen King’s The Dead Zone. Dark Sky Films will be giving Departing Seniors a limited theatrical and VOD release on February 2nd, and with that date right around the corner a trailer has arrived online. You can check it out in the embed above.
The feature directorial debut of actress Clare Cooney, Departing Seniors was written by actor Jose Nateras and centers on high school student Javier, who doesn’t exactly fit in with the popular kids as a queer Mexican-American.

Troye Sivan released his new album, Something to Give Each Other on Friday, along with a stunning music video for “One of Your Girls.”
The black and white visual features the singer looking into the camera as he sings, “Look at you/Skip the application, interview, Sweet like Marabou.” Soon, the camera cuts to Sivan in drag wearing a white dress and knee-high boots as the song transitions to the bittersweet chorus: “Say what you want, and I’ll keep it a secret/You get the key to my heart,...

On his sophomore effort, Bloom, Australian singer Troye Sivan struck a delicate balance between unapologetic queer desire and the kind of hole-in-your-soul introspection that has, until recently, been traditionally expected of LGBTQ+ pop artists. In other words, gay sex is permissible, as long as you’re a little bit tortured about it.
Five years later, Something to Give Each Other finds Sivan older, bolder, and, for a large part of its running time, unrepentantly horny. The album’s lead single, “Rush,” was initially released in a two-and-a-half-minute edit that captures the sensation of a quick hit of poppers (the song’s title also happens to be the name of a popular brand of alkyl nitrite). The version of the throbbing house track that appears on the album, however, is a full minute longer, with a breakdown that lets Sivan breathe—and luxuriate in the afterglow.

Get the tissues out. On Tuesday, Troye Sivan visited BBC Radio 1’s Live Lounge to cover Billie Eilish’s “What Was I Made For” from the Barbie soundtrack.
Backed by a keyboard and soft electric guitar, Sivan closed his eyes and sang the lyrics to the heart-wrenching track Eilish co-wrote. “Think I forgot how to be happy/Something I’m not, but something I can be,” Sivan sings. “Something I wait for/Something I’m made for.” Sivan also performed a stripped rendition of “Rush” on the Live Lounge.

Troye Sivan isn’t letting heartbreak stop him from feeling free. On Wednesday, the Australian singer released the Bag Raiders-sampling “Got Me Started,” along with its freedom-seeking, sexy visual.
The Gordon von Steiner-directed video splices clips of Sivan walking through a city and sitting nude at a bathhouse, before engaging in choreography in the middle of rooms and roofs as he’s joined by dancers.
“You just got me started/And I don’t think I can stop it/And I don’t wanna go home alone, all right?...

Dermot Mulroney didn't decide that he wanted to be an actor until he was already partway through college. According to a profile in a 1986 profile in the Washington Post, Mulroney -- then an up-and-coming 22-year-old -- auditioned for a William Morris agent who just happened to be visiting his college. She was so impressed, she laid a contract in front of him on the spot, and he was on screen in the CBS TV movie "Sin of Innocence" only weeks later. Since then, Mulroney has enjoyed a long and lucrative career in film and TV, appearing in hit films, indie movies, thrillers, horror movies, Christmas movies, and just about anything. Mulroney received a SAG Award nomination for his performance in "August: Osage County" in 2013. He is currently appearing in the Marvel series "Secret Invasion" (as the president) and the Showtime series "Ghosts of Beirut." He also can be seen in...

On Thursday, Comcast released its second-quarter earnings report which included the news that its subscription video-on-demand (SVOD) streaming service Peacock added 2 million subscribers during the three-month period, raising the platform’s customer base to 24 million, a rise of 9% over the 22 million that the still-fledgling streamer reported following the previous quarter. As impressive as the quarterly growth is in today’s streaming market, it is even more impressive when you look at where the NBCUniversal service was last year, the newly reported 22M paid users is up 84.62% over the same period in 2022.

The only thing LeBron James loves more than basketball is his family. The four-time NBA champion shares sons Lebron "Bronny" Jr. and Bryce and daughter Zhuri with his high school sweetheart Savannah James, whom he married in 2013. The James clan racked up quite a TikTok following during quarantine, especially after several of their TikTok dance clips went viral.
When the Jameses aren't showing off their dance moves or basketball skills, they're supporting one another's endeavors. The parents attended the "Space Jam: A New Legacy" premiere with their youngest, followed by a date night at the premiere of Netflix's "Hustle," which LeBron produced. Savannah also joined LeBron at the premiere of his latest project "Shooting Stars," which is currently streaming on Peacock, in May.

I vividly remember the first time I saw a Black woman in a toothpaste ad.
There I sat on our shag carpet, my goldfish behind me and a poster of The Fonz just steps away, taped to my bedroom door. I was watching TV and suddenly a beautiful woman in a short natural filled my screen, her teeth perfect and gleaming. I sat, mesmerized, and watched her shine. When her 30 seconds were up, I raced back to tell my mother: “Mamma, there was a Black woman on TV!”
All Gen X kids timed their day around Saturday morning cartoons, Zoom and Kids Are People Too. After, we rode our bikes till the streetlights came on. For Black Gen X, the jumble of Huffies, Big Wheels and metal skates on someone’s front yard let the little kids know it was time for Fat Albert, What’s Happening! or Good Times.

If Netflix were a theatrical studio, we’d say that they were releasing the trailer for “They Cloned Tyrone” to be attached to opening weekend prints of “Extraction 2,” which has been in very limited theatrical release since last weekend and debuts on streaming this Friday. Offering the latest look at the next “big” Netflix original concurrently with the launch of the most recent biggie is pretty par for the course.

Caleb McLaughlin first came to fame with his scene-stealing role as Lucas on "Stranger Things," and since then, his star has risen steadily. He appeared as Ricky Bell on BET's "The New Edition Story," Darius in "High Flying Bird," Cole in Netflix's "Concrete Cowboy," and - most recently - as Dru Joyce III in the movie adaptation of Lebron James's story, "Shooting Stars."
With "Concrete Cowboy," McLaughlin proved he can carry his own beside heavy hitters like Idris Elba, while in "Shooting Stars," which premiered on Peacock on June 2, the 21-year-old shows he's taking on Hollywood.
TV and movie acting is not where McLaughlin's talents begin and end. He's also a successful singer and stage-musical actor. While McLaughlin's dating life remains a mystery, there are other aspects of the actor's life that he's been an open book about. So, if you found yourself enthralled by his most...

Honestly, I was not too enthusiastic about this assignment. There has been a surge of basketball-centric movies these days (not counting Ben Affleck’s masterful Air), and after covering two of those over the span of three weeks, I was sort of worn out. If you are wondering, I am talking about the Sweetwater biopic and the latest White Men Can’t Jump remake here, both of which I found underwhelming. Naturally, a LeBron James movie didn’t seem like a good bet under the circumstances. But after watching Shooting Stars, I have to say that I got third time lucky with this sub-genre.
Even if you are completely oblivious to anything regarding the sport of basketball, unless you are living under a rock, the name LeBron James should sound familiar. Regarded as one of the modern-day basketball legends, James is not just a sportsman; he is a hugely popular brand.

LeBron James met his wife, Savannah, during their high school days, and the pair have been together ever since. She's stood by the basketball icon's side from the very beginning of his NBA career all the way through the game where he broke the record for most points scored by a single player in February 2023.
"I just love him so much. We're soulmates," Savannah told Harper's Bazaar in 2010, per Business Insider. James agreed, saying, "A person like myself always needs a great sidekick and a person you can rely on no matter the circumstances. And she's that. She's got my back, and I love her for that."
In 2017, Savannah detailed the couple's relationship to Cleveland Magazine, saying of her husband, "He is truly a king to his queen, if you will." "He treats me with so much respect - I mean, it's hard to not love him, with the way...

NBA legend LeBron James’ coming-of-age story was so instrumental to his success, he co-wrote a book about it. Director Chris Robinson now spins the tale into a biopic, Shooting Stars, exploring how James went from a soft-spoken kid with big dreams to a high-school basketball phenom on Sports Illustrated’s cover (headline: “The Chosen One”). (Credit: Oluwaseye Olusa/Universal Pictures) Through the whirlwind, four Akron, Ohio, friends and teammates stand by James. They dub themselves the Fab Five, and while the African American teens feel like fish out of water at a mostly white Catholic school, the unified, determined team of dunkers clutches three state titles. Cast as LeBron, five-star prospect Marquis “Mookie” Cook, 18, had no acting chops but had played on a travel team with James’ son Bronny and glimpsed the pro player in unguarded moments. “We’re all humans,” Cook says. “He talks like us, laughs like us.

Peacock is spreading its wings and taking flight. NBCUniversal’s streaming platform stands at over 20 million users, and according to the company, viewers are not just flocking to the service for hit original shows like “Mrs. Davis” and “Poker Face,” or for content from Bravo or the Hallmark Channel.
Universal movies have also been a big draw for the service. Peacock reports that two out of every three of its users have watched a Universal film on the service, and since the service now claims around 22 million users, rough math indicates that translates to around 14.5 million viewers.

Two-thirds of Peacock’s 22 million subscribers have watched a recent Universal theatrical film, the NBCUniversal streaming service announced at its NewFronts presentation Tuesday.
Emphasizing the value to advertisers of the pay-1 window for Universal films, the company told ad buyers in the audience that 95% of viewers expressed a favorable opinion of the ad experience during movies. Fresh releases generally have only pre-roll ads and then stream without commercial interruption. The new pay-1 setup came about last year when Universal’s output deal with HBO reached its end and NBCU, like all media players, re-examined its pay-1 strategy in light of streaming.
The NewFronts event unfolded against a rancorous backdrop as WGA members set up a picket line on Fifth Avenue just outside of the venue, forcing attendees to weave their way through hundreds of picketers. On the corporate front, NBCU is also regrouping after the sudden ouster of former CEO Jeff Shell.

NBCUniversal has a blowout upfront presentation scheduled for May 15 (assuming the Writers Guild strike doesn’t get in the way), one that will feature all of its brands and networks, including the Peacock streaming service.
But that isn’t stopping the company from giving Peacock an event of its own, with the streamer hosting an event as part of the Iab Newfronts on Tuesday afternoon in New York.
While the main upfront will paint a larger picture for the company’s efforts, the Newfront will lean into more granular details, including a handful of new advertising formats, and a focus on films, including Universal Pictures projects that will find their way to Peacock, and Peacock original films.

As the search for the next “Squid Game” continues, South Korea brought out the big guns at MipTV, introducing several scripted and unscripted offerings. These includes FormatEast’s intergenerational game show “Gganbu Race,” inspired by the Netflix smash hit.
“It’s a slang term meaning close friends and companions. Kids would say that when forming teams to play games,” said producer Fay Zhang during the K Formats: The Next Big Hits from Korea session, mentioning “Squid Game’s” episode where the main character joined forces with female and older contestants.
“Everyone thought they would lose. They won, because of an unexpected synergy effect. Our main concept is to overcome prejudice and win through cooperation beyond age.”
The show will see juniors and seniors battling for prize money. They have to choose partners not knowing which games they will play, but there is a twist: the bigger the age difference, the bigger the prize.
