Former Channel 4 deputy director of programs and head of popular factual Kelly Webb-Lamb has set up a new production company.
Mothership Productions will focus on global formats and “ideas of scale” across the unscripted genres. The new outfit has already hit the ground running with a senior team that includes Charlotte Desai, Gilly Greenslade and Gudren Claire.
“After 25 years in the industry on both sides of the pitching/buying table, it felt like it was time to take the leap and have a go at doing it for myself,” said Webb-Lamb. “I can’t honestly believe I’ve managed to persuade such a brilliant group of women to come along for the ride with me. We are super ambitious — and intend to make some properly great, entertaining, warm and witty programmes — and have a lot of fun.”
Webb-Lamb is one of the U.K. TV industry’s most well-respected executives.

Kelly Webb-Lamb, U.K. broadcaster Channel 4’s deputy director of programs and head of popular factual, will leave the channel later this year.
Webb-Lamb joined in 2016 and worked closely with Channel 4 director of programs Ian Katz in realizing the channel’s creative strategy. She oversaw the popular factual commissioning departments responsible for over 1,000 hours of programming every year — from the launch, and continued success, of “The Great British Bake Off,” “Gogglebox,” “Hunted” and several other creative successes including “The Circle,” which will return soon for a third season. Webb-Lamb was also instrumental in the channel’s response to the Covid-19 pandemic.
She leaves the broadcaster in good heath, with record growth in young viewing and All 4 streaming during 2020. The main channel ended the year with linear share up 3%, share among 16-34s up 8% and All 4 viewing up 31%. Webb-Lamb exits at a time when the channel is looking to the...

In today’s global bulletin, the U.K. live music industry aims for summer return; Studio Lambert bolsters unscripted department; Channel 4 commissions luxury hotel series; and About Premium Content boards Pierre Cardin documentary.
U.K. Music, the umbrella body representing the collective interests of the country’s music industry, has published a report setting out the economic, social and cultural value of live music, along with a blueprint for reviving live music after Covid-19 forced the effective closure of the sector last March.
U.K. Music estimates that live music contributed £1.3 billion ($1.7 billion) directly to the economy in 2019. The report details a number of practical safety protocols to be implemented that can lead to restarting live music, including rapid testing, improving ventilation and effective risk management. It also asks the U.K. government for a definitive date for a full capacity restart; a government-backed reinsurance scheme; targeted financial support...

Banijay has named Endemol Shine Group executives Peter Salmon and Lucinda Hicks as its UK chiefs, with Richard Johnston leaving the business following the merger of the two production giants.
Salmon, the former Endemol Shine chief creative officer, will lead Banijay UK as executive chairman from next month, while UK chief operating officer, Hicks, will become CEO of the newly-restructured operation.
The changes mean that Johnston is stepping down after more than five years running Endemol Shine UK. Johnston is a true veteran of the company, having worked at Endemol for 18 years before it merged with Shine in 2014.
In taking charge of Banijay UK, Salmon will oversee an empire of 25 production labels, responsible for making shows including MasterChef, Grantchester and The Island With Bear Grylls.

Banijay Group, now known simply as Banijay, has unveiled a rebrand following its $2.2Bn takeover of Endemol Shine Group last week. As Deadline reported last week, the Endemol Shine name is effectively no more.
The company has worked with Moving Brands to introduce a new B logo with a fresh color palette, while its website showcases the branding as the backdrop to some its biggest shows, including MasterChef, The Island With Bear Grylls and Survivor.
Banijay also confirmed that the majority of its 120 companies in 22 territories will keep their branding. This means that Endemol Shine labels, such as Kudos, Tiger Aspect, and Initial, will maintain their names under their new parent company.
Endemol Shine International remains alive for now, but will eventually be inhaled by Banijay Rights. It’s too early to say what this will be mean for Endemol Shine International’s 80 staff.

Idris Elba has argued that UK television is in need of a “Magna Carta moment” on diversity and is still failing to reflect modern Britain.
The star of Luther and Prometheus called for a “change of mind-set” in broadcasting during an address at the Houses of Parliament as part of an event that marked a year since the launch of UK broadcaster Channel 4’s 360° Diversity Charter.
London-born Elba, who moved to New York shortly after beginning his career as an actor, said more should be done to ensure British black, Asian and minority ethnic talent prosper at home.
He said: “I never saw myself or my culture on TV so I stopped watching TV. Instead I decided to just go out and become TV. I had to transform the way the industry saw me. I had to climb out of the box. In other words, I didn’t go to America because I couldn’t get parts...

It looks like Channel 4 is planning a celebrity version of The Island with Bear Grylls.
The channel is hoping to raise money for its annual Stand Up 2 Cancer event by leaving stars to fend themselves on a remote island.
Shine TV will produce the special series for Channel 4 in 2016, according to Broadcast.
The move follows two successful runs for the survival series, which has proven to be a ratings hit for Channel 4.
This year's series put 14 men and 14 women on two separate uninhabited islands in the middle of the Pacific Ocean.
Last year's Stand Up 2 Cancer telethon featured a Gogglebox celebrity special with Naomi Campbell, Kate Moss and Noel Gallagher.
Channel 4 raised £14.5 million for Cancer Research UK with the 2014 telethon.
Meanwhile, the new series of Running Wild with Bear Grylls will air on Discovery in the UK in September.

How do you decide whether a reality show is high quality or not? How should we rate and evaluate reality TV when considering shows for awards, such as Emmys? This seems simple: you just watch and decide! But it's not that easy, because so many of reality TV's elements are hidden from our view--or are at least not things we automatically consider and judge. Most often, we end up judging the content, which is to say, we judge the behavior of the people on the show. That's worthy of discussion, absolutely, though it might not reflect reality at all. Scripted TV shows are more straightforward to evaluate. All shows, from multi-camera sitcom to HBO mini-series, share the same basic elements: acting, writing, and directing. There's also technical work that's more behind-the-scenes, such as the score, set design, and costumes. Reality television has some of that, yes, but it's not as clear.

It's the men's final week on The Island with Bear Grylls, and although they've adapted to their new ways of living, the group still face a moral dilemma about where their next meal is coming from.

You know Discovery's "Naked and Afraid," now in its fourth season, is a success not just because it's been renewed, but also because of all the knock-off shows that are popping up. There's everything from VH1's ridiculous "Dating Naked" to this summer's "The Island with Bear Grylls," which is like "Naked and Afraid" except without the nudity. On the series, two people spend 21 days in a remote location, without clothing or other supplies--except one survival item each, such as a flint or machete. That's often dramatic, thanks to the effects of the environment and elements, never mind the survivalists' emotional state, which often deteriorates. Why do people strip naked and suffer for no prize? While the survivalists receive an appearance fee, it's nothing like the $1 million prize for winning "Survivor." So why do it? One cast member, Jeff Zausch, told TV critics last summer, "That's really the first question we get from everybody,...

Things are going from bad to worse for the men on The Island with Bear Grylls, as the group turn on each other when faced with malnourishment and exhaustion.
Tonight's (May 13) episode sees Vic become agitated with Eton-educated cameraman Sam F as he believes he's shying away from the more physical tasks.
"Manual graft is king and we all have to work and sweat, and he's done Jack s**t," says Vic.
Will attempts to calm the situation down with no luck, and a rift soon develops between Sam F and the other men, bringing class prejudices out in the open.
Vic says to Sam F: "Where I come from, we vote every four years for people who speak like you. We put every last vestige of trust in that person, and then you dick on us every single time... so unfortunately, I can't trust you."

Five weeks in to The Island with Bear Grylls and the women make one disastrous mistake that could spell the end of their survival journey.
Desperate not to waste any of the pig they caught and killed in last week's episode, four of the group decide to preserve the remaining meat in one of the two jerry cans they usually use for water purification.
The controversial decision leads to a divide in camp, with vegetarian Jaime angry that her purification system has been ruined.
Things get worse when the meat in the container turns rancid, causing the group to become seriously ill with diarrhoea. One woman faints from exhaustion, dehydration and hunger.
Not only have the women now lost one of their water containers, but they find themselves in danger as the medical team warn that if they don't up their water intake, they may be taken off the island.

Tempers fray and energy levels dip as the men become frustrated by the lack of food, and it's Vic who provides one of many explosive outbursts when he decides he's had enough of fishing for the group and goes on strike.
"It's getting harder and harder every day coming back and seeing everyone laid on't f**king beach and I'm catching fish," says Vic.
Things are later put in perspective when two of the group go through a near death experience. The incident brings true emotions out, leading to heartfelt confessions all round.

Channel 4 has apologised after the men on The Island with Bear Grylls inadvertently ate a protected crocodile.
In tonight's show, the group - who are suffering from hunger and surviving on just 300 calories a day - finally manage to capture and kill what they believe is a caiman.
However, The Sun reports that producers of the show later became concerned when they noticed that the creature was bigger than a normal caiman.
They then found out that the men had actually eaten an American crocodile, a threatened species which is internationally protected from hunting.
The producers, who were unaware that the American crocodile lived on the island, contacted authorities as soon as they realised what had happened.
"This was a genuine and regrettable error," Channel 4 said. "Prior to filming, experts were consulted to ascertain species on both islands and the American crocodile was not known to be in the area of the island.

Center Parcs have offered The Island with Bear Grylls star Barney Strange a free trip after he sobbed about missing his holiday on the show.
Strange had a tough time on last night's episode of The Island as he and cameraman Ross Blair were almost swept out to sea during a late-night fishing trip, with Blair later saying that Strange had saved his life.
The "near-death experience" left Strange feeling low and at one moment he confessed that he missed his family, adding: "I've just realised that this week is the week that I'm meant to be at Center Parcs" - before breaking down in tears.
Strange can now make light of his upset and joked on Twitter yesterday: "It wasn't hard, it's just that I Really love Center Parcs!"
