Dietrich Brüggemann was named best director in the main competition for “No,” while acting awards went to Ibrahim Koma for “As Far as I Can Walk” and Eleonore Loiselle for “Wars.”
For the first time, documentaries were placed in the competition sections rather than being restricted to their own section, with “Every Single Minute” winning a Special Jury Prize.

Only “The Trial of the Chicago 7’s” Phedon Papamichael has been in this race before — for 2013’s “Nebraska.” But watch this award closely, as whoever wins here could signal the director win. The cinematography Oscar has matched director six times in recent years, the last time when Alfonso Cuarón won for 2018’s “Roma.”
Still this is probably one below-the-line race where “Nomadland” is locked to win. Dp Joshua James Richards has picked up wins along the way — from fests and critics.

Director Shaka King and Bobbitt spent a lot of their prep watching other films, looking at what they wanted to avoid.
The Cleveland location proved a perfect stand-in for the film’s Chicago of the 1960s action. Bobbitt’s camera and lenses of choice were the Arri Alexa Lf with Arri DNA Lf prime lenses. He alternated between handheld to capture shootouts,...

While “Nomadland’s” Joshua James Richards and “Mank’s” Erik Messerschmidt lead the field for the cinematography Oscar race, this is a deep competition, and although there are some women contending, they are once again a minority.
As for the forefront of the race, Richards won the Golden Frog from the prestigious Camerimage festival, the National Board of Review gong and has scored a slew of critics awards and nominations, but don’t discount Dariusz Wolski.
Wolski, who has framed such films as “The Crow,” “Pirates of the Caribbean” and “The Martian,” teamed up with Paul Greengrass for the Western “News of the World,” shot in New Mexico. Wolski relied on the Ken Burn doc “The West” and old-fashioned Hollywood Westerns — much as Richards did when capturing America’s sweeping vistas.

Cinematographer Dariusz Wolski would love it if people could see his latest film, the Tom Hanks Western “News of the World,” on the big screen as it was intended.
But although Universal will carry out a limited theatrical release starting on Christmas Day, he realizes Academy voters and critics group members will probably consume the film at home on their laptops or TVs.
So he thinks Christopher Nolan’s recent criticism of WarnerMedia sending most of its slate to HBO Max was misguided when the pandemic continues to rage around the world.
“There’s Covid. People are suffering way more than Christopher Nolan,” Wolski says of Nolan’s reaction.
Nolan blasted the streaming platform move during an appearance on NPR’s “All Things Considered.” The “Tenet” director said, “It’s very important that everybody remembers the exhibition business provides hundreds of thousands of jobs for ordinary people. And my work...

Once Upon A Time was a show about hope and happy endings. Likely because of this, for its seven-season run, nearly every significant villain got a redemption arc.
Regina Aka The Evil Queen got one. Rumpelstiltskin got one. Killian Jones Aka Captain Hook got one. Even Zelena Aka The Wicked Witch of The West got one!
There were so many redemption arcs, and some of them weren't bad. Regina's is considered pretty iconic. However, when it came to Rumpelstiltskin's redemption arc, it was an epic fail.
I'm not badmouthing Rumple. I actually think he's pretty great; I'm a Dearie, through and through. I just think Adam Horowitz and Edward Kitsis did a disservice to Rumple's character with how they handled his redemption and with how they handled him in general.
To understand how royally the writers screwed over our favorite imp, we must go back to the beginning. Once upon a time,...

Seijun Suzuki the absurdist, the unreal-realist, the aesthete, sadly, has passed away at 93. He was one of the finest maverick craftsmen of popular Japanese cinema, who also created paradoxical, mind bending films. He brought a WWII veteran’s eye, similar to his American alter-ego Sam Fuller, with a no-nonsense approach to dialogue, but tweaking that directness with his ‘entertainment over logic’ idea.
Over the years Suzuki directed many exciting B-Movies for Nikkatsu Studios, all superbly crafted with consummate style, but many rose above their programme picture origins. In ‘The West’ he is considered a cult filmmaker, but his job was to make popular genre B-movies for the Japanese public in the late 50s early 60s. His importance is his influence on Asian Cinema, rather on the usual suspects, Tarantino and Jarmusch in Hollywood. His influence on Takashi Kitano, Takashi Miike and some of Sion Sono’s pictures are evident, and...

The coronavirus pandemic is still going on, and shutdowns are being lifted oh so gently. That generally means two things: go outside with a mask on while strafing away from passersby on the sidewalk, or stay in and watch stuff. Luckily, The Criterion Channel has announced its June 2020 lineup, which is full of things old and new.
June sees the streaming premiere of Bertrand Bonello’s fantasy-horror, Zombi Child, which originally premiered in the Director’s Fortnight section of the 2019 Cannes Film Festival. The month also brings us the Channel’s addition of Gus Van Sant’s My Own Private Idaho, which comes with deleted scenes, a making-of documentary, and more. Meanwhile, they will also flesh out the service’s Chantal Akerman selection, adding features such as One Day Pina Asked…, Golden Eighties, and her penultimate feature, Almayer’s Folly. Eliot Goldberg, Evp and head of nonfiction and alternative programming for AMC, Sundance TV and BBC America is stepping down after more than six years.
Goldberg’s No.2, Marco Bresaz, Svp of nonfiction and alternative programming, will step up and lead the nonfiction programming team going forward. The group also includes Kelly Nash, who was recently promoted to VP of nonfiction and alternative programming and will now oversee the West Coast team.

AMC could be taking a trip to Christmasland in the future. Back in December of 2015, it was revealed that the network was considering developing a TV series based on Joe Hill's supernatural novel NOS4A2, and today AMC announced that it has opened a writers' room for NOS4A2 and two other projects.
Led by Jami O'Brien (Hell on Wheels), who, along with Joe Hill, will serve as an executive producer on the series should it move forward, NOS4A2 is now being developed in the aforementioned writers' room.
O'Brien and her team will work together to write scripts for multiple episodes and a framework for the first season, and if AMC likes the concept and story that O'Brien and company come up with, NOS4A2 could be ordered to series.

The upcoming documentary “Killing The Colorado” examines the man-made water crisis that’s affecting the American West. At one point, water was an abundant necessity, and now it’s a scarce and complex commodity. Though many efforts have been taken to curb excessive water use in the West, it’s not clear shorter showers and ripping out lawns will make any discernible difference. We know how much you love watching the American West come alive on AMC's Hell on Wheels.
For five seasons you have watched the struggle to build railroad that will make travel between the east and west a reality and not necessarily a death sentence due to the hardships of traveling by horseback and on foot.
An all new episode of AMC’s limited series, The American West, airs this Saturday, June 18th at 10/9c.
On the second episode, “Two Front War” – executive produced by Robert Redford and Stephen David, and directed by John Ealer – Jesse James targets the railroads.
Custer is sent on a secret mission in Sioux Territory.
Grant deals with growing unrest in the west and south.
There was so much going on during that time, it's almost hard to believe, isn't it?
But if we're going to compare and contrast to what's happening on Hell on Wheels,...
