An insight into a bartering culture long though dead
brianp-47-33956817 May 2015
'Bartering' (Trading goods or services without the exchange of money. Ref: thefreedictionary.com)

The cast majority of modern cultures have no real concept of 'barter'. Pretty much every modern transaction is based upon 'Money' (A conceptual device used to denote 'worth', initially it was based upon a rare material, i.e. Gold, but has since been replaced by one of the most common materials, wood pulp (paper) - and even this is being steadily replaced by bits on computer systems.)

Anyway... enough of the history... This program demonstrates how barter not only worked but how it works. It's an essential guide to bartering for any community on how it can work without the use of the (essentially) worthless pieces of paper, commonly used as currency today. Admittedly, this systems does NOT and CANNOT work for large communities - for example, any large systems must integrate services such as Hospitals, Fire Fighting etc

This program is, by definition, a 'History Program' : studying a modern culture using an, albeit, throwback method of trade. It has rich and distinctive 'cast' who excel in getting across the ideals', lifestyle and 'laid-back' attitude to life that so many people in this 'modern' age seek. That so many people in this age spend there time looking back probably should tell you just how ******-up we all find it!

Wonderful Show Full of Characters
Joyce-233-2909917 February 2015
I simply love this show. It's as genuine old New England as it gets. I love just watching something fun and real and entertaining. The characters are down to earth and so much more likable than those Duck guys. You can actually learn a thing or two about how to land a bargain. The deals they make are so creative and you can tell this sort of practice is commonplace and born of necessity from the long cold winters. I wish we had an Uncle Henrys down south. I hope they get picked up for another season because I'm actually sick to death of the antique centric shows. This one, of course, has plenty of treasures but also focuses of trading of labor....not just goods. Hey, you find my septic system and I'll give you a bunch of scrap metal. These people are hard workers and know how to work a deal!

Very relaxing show

In this time of so much turmoil, it is great to watch a show that is fun. Yes it may be simple and at times goofy, but it is nice to tune into these common regular characters who really like their life style and what they do.It shows a very laid back way of life and the characters are very likable This may not be the lifestyle for everyone but certainly suits the stars of this very good show. The most recent episode involved the interaction between characters at an event. This was fun to watch. This show may not be for everyone. If you like good wholesome entertainment that the whole family can enjoy, this is your show.
