The first "Halo" video game, "Halo: Combat Evolved," was released in 2001 and its lore was so involved and complicated, it was accompanied by the publication of Eric Nylud's novel "Halo: The Fall of Reach." The plot reaches back into ancient times where it involves wars between long-forgotten alien species, then reaches into the year 2525 where elite supersoldiers, part of the Spartan II project, keep the peace. The game's action surrounds the invasion of a new alien species called the Covenant, a race waging a galaxy-wide holy war. The main character is Master Chief John-177, a masked Spartan equipped with high-tech guns and a holographic helper/girlfriend named Cortana.

The Halo games have been a staple in the gaming industry since its debut in 2001 as “Halo: Combat Evolved.” Developed by Bungie and published by Microsoft, the game quickly gained a massive following and spawned numerous sequels and spin-offs.
The game’s success was so great that it soon made its way to the big screen with adaptations from the origin story of the game such as “Halo: Nightfall,” “Halo: Forward Unto Dawn,” and most recently, the upcoming Paramount+ series, “Halo.” The compelling storylines and outstanding performances from actors in these on-screen adaptations have received critical acclaim.

In May 2020, Paramount+ (still known as CBS All Access back then) announced the order for a series centered on the Captain Pike, Number One, and Spock characters introduced on Star Trek: Discovery Season 2, and the fan base went Wild.
Anson Mount brought the legendary Pike to life as the perfect precursor to the Kirk era while Rebecca Romijn epitomized the efficiency and effectiveness of the ultimate second-in-command, Number One.
Ethan Peck had the hardest role to take on as Spock, a figure long-beloved and revered from Leonard Nimoy's first portrayal of the Vulcan-Human defender of all things logical and fascinating. Peck's turn in the pointy ears was a resounding success.
With the three of them at the helm of the iconic Enterprise, anticipation for a return to episodic exploratory missions has been a slow-burning roar ever since.

Set in the very near future where scientists have discovered a method of matching people with their perfect romantic fit using DNA, eight-part Netflix Original The One is technically a sci-fi drama. Really though, it’s a crime thriller revolving around the murky circumstances in which the cash cow company behind the matching service was created. Written by Misfits and Crazyhead creator Howard Overman, The One is based on the 2017 novel of the same name by John Marrs. It’s a cat-and-mouse game between wealthy, driven CEO Rebecca (Hannah Ware) and police detective Kate (Zoë Tapper).
While you’re solving the show’s mysteries, we’ve taken the liberty of solving that nagging background question of where you might have seen its cast on screen before…

It’s going on five years since 343 Industries took to the stage at E3 and announced plans to bring Halo to cable TV and still, we’re no closer to seeing the end product.
Unveiled as a collaboration between 343, Microsoft and Steven Spielberg (!), there’s been nary a mention of the live-action project ever since, leading many to assume that a premium adaptation of Halo, one of the biggest video game IPs on the market, was little more than wishful thinking.
Turns out that’s not the case, though, as Showtime President and CEO David Nevins has insisted that the Halo TV series is “still in very active development.” Not only that, but he’s even laid eyes on the scripts, so perhaps it’s further along than initially thought?
Before we get our hopes up, though, here’s what Gary Levine, president of programming at Showtime, added in the...

Halo 5: Guardians
Developed by 343 Industries
Published by Microsoft Studios
Available on Xbox One
Halo 2 and Halo 5: Guardians have a lot in common. Both have split narrative campaigns. Halo 2‘s boasted the return of Master Chief and gave fresh perspective by allowing players to play as the Arbiter, previously a Covenant enemy. Halo 5 has players stepping back into the role of Master Chief and his Blue Team, while following the path of Spartan Locke and Fireteam Osiris who’ve been tasked to track him down. Both games feature strong player versus player arena multiplayer modes, which went on to shape the future of the series in the case of 2, and is certain to do so again in the case of 5. Both games also take the series to bigger, more explosive places than what came before, with amazing set pieces, mechanics, and a sense of scope and scale that exceeds their predecessors.

In a fortnight’s time, Xbox One owners eager to pick up Halo 5: Guardians may have some content management to do before they can set foot in 343 Industries’ hotly-anticipated space sequel. That’s because, according to packaged copies appearing online, the studio’s shooter will require “up to 60Gb” of free space.
IGN published a report that appears to verify the file size, which would certainly make Guardians one of the heftiest console titles on the market. This could not only present problems to those planning on downloading the title on October 27, but considering that the Limited Collector’s Edition of the game (priced at $249.99) comes packing a digital code for Halo 5: Guardians, it’s little wonder why Microsoft chose to offer a physical copy as a substitute.

While promoting the release of Halo: Nightfall on blu-ray and DVD, this interview with star Mike Colter appeared to slip in under the radar. While the article primarily focused on Colter's role as Agent Locke in 'Nightfall' and the forthcoming Halo 5: Guradians, the veteran actor also talked in-depth about his turn as Marvel blue-collar superhero, Luke Cage. On his role in Aka Jessica Jones, Colter stated that Cage and Krysten Ritter's Jessica Jones will have a history, prior to where the show initially drops viewers. "I don't want to give too much away about how much he's involved in the 'A.K.A Jessica Jones' show but Jessica and Luke Cage have a history and a relationship. Microsoft's "Halo" has been extremely lucrative for all involved from the studio to the developer. What started off as a video game has spawned everything form webseries and movies to books, most of them (though not all) officially licensed and falling within the "Halo" universe. Staying true to canon has been key to all of the official merchandising, a fact that is apparent not only from the story at the center of Halo: Nightfall but from the extras on the blu-ray release, many of which deal almost exclusively with how each department (be it costuming or story) ensured the story of this latest adventure fit into the "Halo" universe continuum.

Halo: Nightfall won’t be exclusive to Xbox consoles for much longer. The online original series starring Mike Colter and inspired by the incredibly popular video game developed by 343 Industries will be available on Blu-ray, DVD, and streaming video-on-demand services starting March 17, 2015.
Halo: Nightfall covers the story of Jameson Locke (Colter), an agent with Earth’s Office of Naval Intelligence (Oni) who must investigate terrorist activity on the colony world Sedra. Nightfall bridges gaps between the Halo 4 video game and the upcoming Halo 5: Guardians game, in which Locke will play a key role in the storyline. The five-episode series was executive produced by Ridley Scott and released on November 11, 2014.
Up until this point, Nightfall was only available on Xbox 360 and Xbox One via the official Halo Waypoint channel. Now, Microsoft said it will bundle all five episodes of Nightfall into one feature-length film for release on DVD and Blu-Ray.

The Motion Picture Sound Editors' (Mpse) 62nd annual Golden Reel Awards honored a full spread of films Sunday night. "American Sniper," "Birdman," "Unbroken," "Get On Up" and "Big Hero 6" all walked away with hardware. At the Oscars, "Sniper," "Birdman" and "Unbroken" are up against "The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies" and "Interstellar." "Birdman" won the Cinema Audio Society's mixing prize Saturday and could well win both sound fields. Or it could split with "Sniper," or Clint Eastwood's war film could take both, etc. Lots of options seem evident. (And the sound categories, by the way, are the only places for "Unbroken" fans to speak up.) Check out the full list of Mpse winners below, nominees here and the rest of the season's offerings at The Circuit. Between Marvel, sitcoms, and returning favourites, Netflix is producing more and more original content, here's what we can expect in 2015...
Not happy with being the undisputable king of subscription streaming TV and films, Netflix has spent the last few years finding its footing in creating original content. It's enjoyed some big hits with the likes of House Of Cards and Orange Is The New Black, but has also produced some less well-received properties such as Hemlock Grove and Arrested Development’s resurrection.
Marco Polo, the service's big budget drama following Mongolian leader Kublai Khan, was a sizeable risk for the network and one that didn't exactly lit the critical world alight (though a second season may well help with the teething problems).
Looking ahead, it seems that we’ll be seeing a new face of Netflix before the year is out. Netflix has more upcoming projects than ever before and...

The final guild/industry group to declare nominees did so this afternoon as the Motion Picture Sound Editors (Mpse) spoke up with a roll call of players for the 62nd Golden Reel Awards. On the film side of things, "Birdman" and "Dawn of the Planet of the Apes" had the best showing with three nominations each. I've been wondering if the latter could slide into Oscar play this year, but it's hard to gauge here, as "Rise of the Planet of the Apes" had a nice Mpse showing, too. In the effects/foley category, "Fury" is featured as well, also a strong possibility to pop up. All other expected players ("American Sniper," "Guardians of the Galaxy," "Unbroken," etc.) are featured. We'll see how the sound branch shakes it all out tomorrow but I'm a little more confused by where they'll end up going than usual, I must say. Check out...

Daredevil, Preacher, Supergirl... Lost track of the zillions of comic book shows to grace our televisions from 2015? Here's our cheat sheet.
It’s a wonderful time to be a TV-binging comic book fan. In fact, if you were a little tactical about your viewing habits (and not too fussy in your Marvel/DC preference), we’re approaching a state where you could probably fill an ‘all the soap operas’ shaped hole in your schedule every day with the stuff of capes, cowls and crime-fighting.
Of course, we already have Arrow, The Flash, Gotham, Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D., Agent Carter, The Walking Dead and – for now – Constantine gracing our schedules. Of those, Arrow, The Flash and The Walking Dead have already been picked up for further seasons, as well. With the exception of Constantine, we wouldn’t be too surprised to hear the rest renewed too.
The fun doesn’t stop there.

“District 9″ director Neill Blomkamp is fueling rumors that there may have been an “Alien” sequel in the works.

After months of speculation, Marvel has named its Luke Cage – it’s Mike Colter.
Following on to the news that Krysten Ritter will play Jessica Jones, in her own Marvel Studios/Netflix production entitled Aka Jessica Jones, we have now also learned who will be playing Luke Cage.
The man who will become Power Man is Mike Colter, previously seen in Xbox’s Halo: Nightfall series, American Horror Story: Coven and The Good Wife.
In the official press release, executive producer/showrunner Melissa Rosenberg said that “Mike embodies the strength, edge and depth of Luke Cage. We're excited to have him bring this iconic Marvel character to life.”
Interestingly, the announcement mentioned that Colter would star as Luke Cage alongside Krysten Ritter in Aka Jessica Jones, but didn’t reference his own separate programme.

Charlie Cox is Daredevil and Krysten Ritter is Jessica Jones. Now we have the third of the four members of Marvel / Netflix's Defenders crossover event series: Mike Colter will star as Luke Cage, sometimes known as Power Man. You call him names and he sits and grins, 'cause everyone else is just a sucker to him. This is breakout role for Colter, who's been plugging away in movies and TV for a good decade. On the small screen he's been in the usual suspects like ER, the various Law & Orders, American Horror Story and The Good Wife. In the cinema you might have caught him in Million Dollar Baby, Salt, Men In Black 3 or Zero Dark Thirty. This year he's been Jameson Locke in the X-Box Live series Halo: Nightfall. He's about to blow up rather bigger.Cage will first appear in A.K.A. Jessica Jones before his own series airs.

Now that principal photography on Marvel's Daredevil series is complete, the studio is ready to move forward with Luke Cage. According to THR, the studio has officially cast Mike Colter (The Following, Halo: Nightfall, The Good Wife) in the title role of the series. The guy is a great actor, and he definitely looks like he has what it take to play this badass role. The report offers up the following information about his character:
"During the course of an investigation in New York, private investigator Jessica Jones encounters the enigmatic Luke Cage — a man whose past has secrets that will dramatically alter Jessica herself in ways she could never have imagined."
So Colter will make his Marvel universe debut with a recurring role opposite Krysten Ritter in Jessica Jones before he gets his own series. It seems like there could be a lot of crossover with the two series.

Hot on the heels of the casting of Krysten Ritter as Jessica Jones, Marvel may have found the titular hero of "Luke Cage," one of the four series to be produced under its deal with Netflix.
Deadline indicates that the studio has apparently picked Mike Colter for the role of the African American superhero. The character is expected to play a significant part in around half the episodes of the "Jessica Jones" series before scoring his own standalone series.
Colter, who was originally rumored for the role several weeks ago alongside "Crisis" actor Lance Gross, was recently the star of the digital series "Halo: Nightfall". He's best known though for his recurring role as the dangerous drug kingpin Lemond Bishop in CBS' legal drama "The Good Wife".

The first official trailer for Halo: Nightfall debuted this week, and while it sounds like a graphic novel spin-off or a piece of Dlc for the video game series, it’s actually a pretty interesting project. It’s a fully-fledged television miniseries, if you can still say “television” when it’s primarily airing on a video game console, the Xbox. It’s got a good pedigree in the form of executive produce Ridley Scott, who does not appear to simply be cashing a check and nodding in approval, as he’s reportedly had quite a bit of direct input in the show itself. The “show” serves as both its own creative project, but also an introduction to the upcoming Halo 5 in 2015. It’s following in the footsteps of Halo: Forward Unto Dawn, the web series that proved Halo could exist onscreen and not necessarily need to be a blockbuster movie with a bloated budget.
