A selection of the 2014 Busan International Film Festival, Dustin Nguyen plays the lead in Le Van Kiet's Gentle - an adaptation of the Dostoyevsky short story of the same name. A dark drama revolving around a pawn shop owner who takes a beautiful but poor young woman as his wife the film generated a good response in Busan - and from our own Patryk Czekaj when it later screened in Warsaw - and it's not at all hard to see why from the freshly released trailer. Iffr reveals Big Screen Awards nominees and the complete line-up for its Bright Future and Spectrum strands, including world premieres from the Us, China and the Netherlands.
Second Coming, starring Idris Elba and Nadine Marshall, has been named as one of 10 films up for the Big Screen Award at the International Film Festival Rotterdam (Iffr) (Jan 21 - Feb 1).
The UK film, written and directed by Debbie Tucker Green, will be vying for a prize of €10,000 ($12,000) awarded specifically to support theatrical distribution of the film in The Netherlands
The 10 nominees are from Iffr’s Bright Future and Spectrum programmes with the winner chosen by a specially selected audience jury. Other titles include Lisandro Alonso’s Cannes Fipresci winner Jauja and Carlos Vermut’s San Sebastian winner Magical Girl.

Le-Van Kiet's Gentle starts with an unexpectedly drastic scene, as if trying to wash away the tranquility so pleasantly accentuated by the film's opening credits and its intriguing title, inspired by Fyodor Dostoyevsky's 1876 short story 'A Gentle Creature'.From the viewpoint of someone who has never read the aforementioned piece it seems all the more fascinating to observe how the profound, often distressing story of emotional disconnect in a marriage without any real future prospects unravels on the big screen.Dostoyevsky's short has been adapted into feature films a few times before (most notably by Robert Bresson in 1969, under the French title Une femme douce), and it's actually not the first time that a director from a country that's still undergoing massive changes, both cultural...
