- SIX MONTHS AGO
We open when Thea first got into Malcolm's car. He says they can go anywhere and she correctly guesses the reason is he's ducking the Arrow and the police. She says she's going with him because she never wants to feel that kind of pain again and thinks he can teach her to withstand pain.
In present day the Arrow is striking out finding leads into Sara's murder. Queen admits "the trail's gone cold." Felicity's figured out Thea is in Corto Maltese, an island off the coast of South America. Roy doesn't think there's any point, but Queen is convinced they can bring her back. Roy wants to go with him.
At home Lyla tells Digs that a operative named Mark Shaw has gone dark in Corto Maltese. He hasn't pushed his panic button, so she wants Digs to check on him. Shaw is an old friend of Lyla's.
Laurel pays a visit to Ted Grant, a self-defense instructor. She's asking about one of his students, Tom Bronson, who was at the scene of a break-in the night before. Grant says Bronson was with him that night, but essentially admits he's not telling the truth.
The guys arrive at Corto Maltese. Queen goes to the addresses and is told Thea is working a local café.
We flashback again to the first days of Thea's training with Malcolm. He demonstrates that he's trained himself to tolerate pouring scalding hot oil on his hand without it bothering him. He says every warrior must learn that pain is inevitable but suffering is optional and grabs her hand.
Back in present day Queen finds Thea. He says he understands why she left Starling and he misses her. He'd like her to come home, but Thea says that's never going to happen.
Back in our training flashback Thea tells Malcolm she can't tolerate the pain: "This isn't me. I can't do this." He comfort her and blames himself.
In present day Felicity reports for her first day on the job with Palmer. She has a huge new office and her own assistant. He wants her to try and recover a file server recovered from the Applied Sciences explosion.
Queen helps Digs check up on Shaw. Digs finds Shaw, who initially pulls a knife on him. Digs has to give him a security transcoder he got from Lyla to prove his identity. Shaw says he's on edge because someone on the island has hacked into ARGUS' "Actual" a list of all the agents, their covers and their families.
At an AA meeting Laurel takes an interest in Erica, whose boyfriend still drinks and has been abusive. Laurel tells Lance that Erica's boyfriend has eight warrants against him. Lance would like to help, but says that if the police start using what they hear in AA meetings it will kill the program.
Shaw takes Digs to the sale of the Actual. But when they arrive Digs figures out Shaw is full of it. Shaw tases Digs and takes the transcoder. It is what Shaw needs to decode the Actual and sell it himself. Shaw gets away just before Queen arrives on the scene.
Roy talks to Thea. She explains she likes being on the island because nobody there knows here as Thea Queen. She says she was tired of all the lies. Roy tells her if she's happy she should stay.
We flashback again to the beginnings of Thea's training. He says he has to handle her training differently and can't treat her like his daughter. He punches her several times.
In present day Digs Skypes with Lyla. She says a team is on the way. After hanging up Digs and Queen agree the team won't arrive on time.
Digs calls Felicity and asks for help locating Shaw. At the same time Laurel calls Felicity, wanting her to track down Erica's boyfriend.
Queen thinks it's time to tell Thea the entire truth. He thinks that's the only way to bring her back. Digs thinks explaining all the lies will drive Thea away for good, but Queen doesn't think there's a choice.
Laurel puts on a mask and goes after Erica's boyfriend with a stick. She gets in a few shots but he turns the table and knocks her down with her own weapon before taking off.
Laurel ends up in the hospital. Lance visits her and is upset she tried to take matters into her own hands. He wants to know what's going on, but Laurel doesn't say anything about Sara.
Queen takes Thea aside and tells her he's done things that he ashamed of and he's worried that knowledge would chase her away forever. He emphasizes that although Malcolm is her blood, he wasn't really her father. Queen tells her about his father's sacrifice to keep him alive. He says "You're my family, I need you."
Queen, Digs and Roy watch Shaw make the deal. Just as they're preparing to move in another group of military-type men show up on the scene. They are there to help protect Shaw. Ultimately they are successful in taking down Shaw and preventing the Actual from falling into the wrong hands. Shaw tells Digs he had no choice.
Thea tells Malcolm she wants to leave with her brother. She spars with him and seems to prove she's learned enough that she can move on. But Thea suspects he let her win.
At the last minute Thea joins the guys at the airport. A man spills hot coffee on her hand but she doesn't even flinch. Queen notices.
Back home Queen asks Laurel what happened to her. She tells him that when she wears Sara's outfit it feels like her sister's alive again. She wants Queen to train her so she can pick up the The Canary's mission. He turns her down, pointing out what would happen to Laurel's father if he lost her. Queen doesn't think it's what Sara would have wanted.
Digs returns home and Lyla tells him she needs to go into the office.
Erica's boyfriend ends up in the station because of an anonymous tip.
Laurel goes to Grant and asks him to train her.
Palmer congratulates Felicity on recovering the data. She asks for a few days off, once again citing "a long story." We see the date from the server included advanced weaponry.
Queen asks Roy if he thought Thea seemed different. At this moment Nyssa al Ghul enters the room with her bow drawn. "Where is she? Where is Sara?"
