1994. On what was supposed to be the weekend of Ali's bat mitzvah, Mort informs Shelly that he has a last minute invitation to attend a conference, which leaves her to handle all the issues around canceling the bat mitzvah on her own. With Sarah coming home for the weekend, Shelly takes advantage of the situation to hang out with her sister Judy instead, to who she confides in her and Mort's life as it currently stands. Sarah, in turn, reneges on her responsibilities to go off to a protest, leaving Josh in charge, who in turn reneges on that new task to hang out with Rita. Ali, on her own, is able to make her way to the beach for the day, there where she tries to become a woman in a different way other than the ritual of the bat mitzvah. Meanwhile, Mort, in reality, has headed off with Mark to attend an annual cross-dressing camp, where they hope to be able to express themselves as Maura and Marcy in all their glory. Although they are able to express much of those sides of themselves, the camp is not everything Maura was anticipating, first with the presence of "Connie" at the camp, and second with the attendees not being as non-judgmental as Maura would have wanted for her own situation.
