When Team Downey co-founder Susan Downey and president of production Amanda Burrell were approached with what would become “The Sympathizer,” it presented them and fellow co-founder and star Robert Downey Jr. with what Susan Downey calls “an excellent creative opportunity and challenge.” It also led to a question: “How are we going to pull this off?”

Robert Downey Jr is one of the most respected and talented actors in Hollywood. Though he gained God-like status for his work as Iron Man, his recent appearance in Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer has helped him gain acclaim outside of his work in the MCU. While the actor has now made a reputation for himself as a man of great admiration, his public image wasn’t always this clean.
Robert Downey Jr. as Lewis Strauss in Oppenheimer
Downey famously hit rock bottom at a very young age and his life trajectory has been one to inspire many. However, his experiences from the past are rarely positive. In a very dark young adult life, there are a few moments that bring smiles to his fans’ faces. The perfect example would be his first meeting with one of the biggest stars in the world, Tom Cruise.

Exclusive: Pierce Brosnan (Fast Charlie), Samuel L. Jackson (Argylle), and Brandon Lessard (Murder at Yellowstone City) are in Montana shooting Unholy Trinity, a Western helmed by Richard Gray (Robert the Bruce), which has secured a SAG-AFTRA Interim Agreement.
Described as a tale of revenge, dark secrets, and buried treasures, the film is set against the turbulent backdrop of 1870s Montana. It was more than a little heartening to see Roger Corman paid tribute by Quentin Tarantino at Cannes’ closing night. By now the director-producer-mogul’s imprint on cinema is understood to eclipse, rough estimate, 99.5% of anybody who’s touched the medium, but on a night for celebrating what’s new, trend-following, and manicured it could’ve hardly been more necessary. Thus I’m further heartened seeing the Criterion Channel will host a retrospective of Corman’s Edgar Allan Poe adaptations running eight films and aptly titled “Grindhouse Gothic,” though I might save the selections for October.
Centerpiece, though, is a hip hop series including Bill Duke’s superb Deep Cover, Ghost Dog, and numerous documentaries––among them Beats, Rhymes & Life: The Travels of a Tribe Called Quest, making Michael Rapaport a Criterion-approved auteur. Hollywood is at a crossroads and the 160,000 actors that make up SAG-AFTRA are seemingly in the driver’s seat.
Will there be an actors strike, on top of the writers strike, which is in its ninth week? What happens if there are two strikes? Will SAG-AFTRA extend its negotiations with the studios and then strike? Or will they extend and strike a deal? Would an actors strike compound the pain across the entertainment industry that is already reeling from the writers strike?
Deadline revealed Wednesday that SAG-AFTRA and the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers are considering extending negotiations until next week (July 7) or later. This also would make sense given that most of Hollywood will be out of town for a long holiday weekend.
In addition to these questions, there are dozens of rumors flying around on the picket lines and Beverly Hills lunch spots. There’s talk...

Last month, we shared the news that Robert De Niro had signed on to star in a TV series for the first time in his career, as he’ll be starring in and executive producing the six-episode limited series Zero Day for Netflix. Now Deadline reports that De Niro has signed on for another series. He’ll be starring in the crime drama Bobby Meritorious for the Paramount+ streaming service, which is also home to the Sylvester Stallone crime drama series Tulsa King.
Billy Ray, whose credits include Richard Jewell, Terminator: Dark Fate, Captain Phillips, and The Hunger Games, is writing Bobby Meritorious, telling a story that is set amongst the US Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of New York, which is a sovereign kingdom with seemingly unlimited power and scope. But now an informant in Sdny’s biggest case, Avery “The Sage” Accomando is poised to tear this storied institution apart.

The legends truly are adapting to modern times. Netflix has just announced that Robert De Niro will be starring in a limited series (his first ever TV series) for the streaming platform, which he will also executive produce, called Zero Day. The series will be directed as well as executive produced by Lesli Linka Glatter. The show comes from creators and executive producers — Pulitzer Prize winner Michael S. Schmidt, Eric Newman under Grand Electric Productions, and Noah Oppenheim.
The official logline from Netflix reads,
“Zero Day asks the question on everyone’s mind — how do we find truth in a world in crisis, one seemingly being torn apart by forces outside our control? And in an era rife with conspiracy theory and subterfuge, how much of those forces are products of our own doing, perhaps even of our own imagining?”
The drama will be a limited series with six episodes.

Exclusive: One notable title up for sale we’re hearing about at the European Film Market is Timothy Scott Bogart’s pop Romeo & Juliet musical, Verona starring Clara Rugaard, Jamie Ward, Rebel Wilson, Rupert Everett, Jason Isaacs and Derek Jacobi.
Verona will be the first film in a original pop musical trilogy based around the real-life 1301 story that inspired Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet. A wide theatrical releaser this Christmas is being planned.
Bogart tells us, “We’ve set out to tell the greatest love story of all time, set to the musical pulse of our time. But Shakespeare only told part of that remarkable tale whose events changed the course of history!”
Voltage is handling international sales on Verona.
Bogart recently directed the 1970s-1980s set feature Spinning Gold about his record label exec father Neil Bogart’s rise and fall with Casablanca Records. That pic is coming out on March 31 in theaters.

In a small town on the Oregon coast, Fran spends hours at her job, barely moving for her office cubicle. When Robert starts to work at the same company, Fran begins to tread the uncertain path toward building a connection with a stranger.
When it comes to 2020s cinema, we’re often told that bigger is better. Movies don’t pack out a cinema screen unless they’re adorned with superheroes, gunfights, and car chases that freewheel into an explosion of a finale. You know Kurt Russell from "Big Trouble in Little China," "Tombstone," "Stargate," "Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2," and the 1979 TV movie "Elvis." But did you know that he actually got to work with Elvis? He was 10 years old at the time, and the film was 1963's "It Happened at the World's Fair," as we learn in a 2016 interview with GQ. The film had Elvis Presley as a crop-dusting pilot who ends up at the World's Fair. Elvis's character Mike likes a nurse (Joan O'Brien) who isn't interested. He pays Russell's character a little spare change to kick him in the shins, so he has a reason to visit this nurse. Of course, later on, the boy blows Mike's cover by asking if he'd pay to have the kid do it again.
Russell says in the GQ article that he really wasn't familiar with Presley as a rock and roll...

Directed by Christian Tafdrup, horror film Speak No Evil is on the way from IFC Midnight and Shudder, coming to select theaters next month and streaming on Shudder September 15.
IFC Midnight’s release brings the film to theaters in NY and LA on September 9.
Watch the tense Speak No Evil trailer below.
In Speak No Evil, “On a vacation in Tuscany, two families – one Danish, one Dutch – meet and become fast friends. Months later, the free-spirited Dutch family extends an invitation to the more conservative Danish one for a holiday weekend getaway at their countryside home.
“However, it doesn’t take long before things gradually get out of hand as the joy of reunion is replaced with misunderstandings. The Dutch hospitality quickly turns unnerving for the Danes, and they find themselves increasingly caught in a web of their own politeness in the face of eccentric…or is it sinister…behavior.

Wilco’s first big gesture when they formed in the Nineties was to leave behind the sound of co-founder Jeff Tweedy’s first band, Midwestern alt-country icons Uncle Tupelo. It was a smart move, since at the time even the kind of people who liked iconic Midwestern alt-country were starting to get word that the dread cult of “authenticity” was becoming toxic and freighted. It also helped that the band excelled at other stuff, especially on the sonically rangy 1996 double LP Being There and 2002’s post-rock-garlanded classic Yankee Hotel Foxtrot.

Variety has been given exclusive access to the trailer (below) for Danish horror film “Speak No Evil,” which has its world premiere at Sundance. Sales are being handled by TrustNordisk.
The film follows a Danish family on vacation in Tuscany, where they befriend a Dutch family. Months later the Danish couple receive an invitation to visit the Dutch and decide to go for the weekend. Starring Jane Fonda and Lily Tomlin in the title roles, the Martin Sheen and Sam Waterston co-starring comedy from Skydance has been an international success for Netflix since its debut in 2015. With Herbert back for her sixth season on the show, the penultimate season of Grace and Frankie launched on the streamer on Jan. 15, 2020.
