The slot belonging to the second film of the competition belonged to Magnus von Horn‘s The Girl with the Needle (aka Pigen med nålen) – a Danish-Polish-Swedish co-production in glorious b&w photography. Almost a decade since his debut feature The Here After premiered at Directors’ Fortnight, Swedish director Magnus von Horn is finally in Cannes Competition with the black-and-white period film The Girl with the Needle. Previously there was Sweat––the Polish-language jab at influencer culture––but when the festival was canceled on account of the pandemic, it got a “Cannes Selection” stamp rather than “Competition.” A silver lining that The Girl with the Needle is perhaps best-suited for a Palme d’Or head-to-head: it is surprising, stylish, and unabashedly brave.
Von Horn certainly knows what to aim for when bringing in two of the most exciting names in Scandinavian cinema today, Vic Carmen Sonne (Holiday) and Trine Dyrholm. Sonne plays Karoline, a factory seamstress who finds herself in a pickle; Dyrholm is Dagmar, the mysterious woman who offers help. While Karoline is undoubtedly the protagonist––and the titular girl with the needle,...

Magnus von Horn’s sophomore feature Sweat earned its director a spot in Cannes’ Official Selection in 2020, after his debut, The Here After, played in Directors’ Fortnight in 2015. But the festival of 2020 was canceled in the wake of the Covid pandemic, so von Horn’s place in this year’s Competition, with his third feature The Girl With the Needle, must surely mark the Swedish director’s coming-of-age. The film, starring Vic Carmen Sonne and Trine Dyrholm, riffs on one of Denmark’s most notorious murder cases to weave a poetic and dark fairytale about the people living on the margins in the aftermath of the First World War.
Dyrholm stars as Dagmar Overbye, the Danish serial killer convicted of murdering nine children — but suspected of many more deaths — between 1913 and 1920. One was her own; the others were handed to her by struggling mothers with babies born out of wedlock,...

In 2020, Magnus von Horn was excited to find that his film Sweat had been accepted into the Official Selection at Cannes, a big step up from his debut, The Here After, which made Directors’ Fortnight in 2015. The pandemic put an end to that, but his disappointment was short-lived; this year, his dark atmospheric follow-up, The Girl With the Needle, sees him joining the big league. “This is huge to me,” he beams. “The main competition!”

Set in Denmark during World War I, the film stars Vic Carmen Sonne as Karoline, a young seamstress whose soldier husband is missing in action. Through a series of mishaps, Karolin falls pregnant, loses her job, and meets a mysterious woman named Dagmar (Trine Dyrholm) who runs both a candy store and an adoption agency.
Now based in Poland, where he graduated from Łódź Film School in 2013, Von Horn has always pursued a career in film.

Swedish-Polish director Magnus von Horn’s dark period drama “The Girl With the Needle” will compete for the Palme d’Or at the 77th Cannes Film Festival. Variety has been given exclusive access to a first-look clip from the film.
Written by von Horn and Line Langebek (“I’ll Come Running”), “The Girl With the Needle” is loosely based on the true story of Dagmar Overbye, a Danish woman who established an underground adoption agency in post-World War I Copenhagen to help poor women dealing with unwanted pregnancies.
Starring Trine Dyrholm, Vic Carmen Sonne and Besir Zeciri (“Wildland”), the film follows Karoline (Sonne), a young factory worker who is struggling to survive on the fringes of society. When she finds herself unemployed, abandoned and pregnant, she meets Dagmar (Dyrholm), a charismatic shopkeeper who helps poor mothers to find foster homes for their unwanted children.

When U.K. writer-director Jonathan Glazer approached Polish cinematographer Łukasz Żal about “The Zone of Interest,” a provocative Holocaust drama adapted from a 2014 novel by Martin Amis, he had a bold proposition for the film, which centers on the domestic life of an Auschwitz commandant and his family living in the shadow of the notorious concentration camp. What if, Glazer suggested, they shoot the scenes inside the Höss family home without a single camera on set?
Working on location, production designer Chris Oddy and his crew built a replica of the camp commandant’s real-life house. Then Oddy, Glazer, Żal and first A.D. Marc Wilson got to work, outfitting the set to accommodate the director’s daring gambit, which would allow the actors to move about the house unobstructed and offer a more natural portrait of the family’s everyday life.
“We drilled the house like Swiss cheese,” Żal says.

Jan Naszewski’s Warsaw-based sales company has boarded Finnish-Iranian Hamy Ramezan’s debut feature “Any Day Now,” to be shown as a work in progress at Göteborg’s Nordic Film Market, Which Runs Jan 30.-Feb 2.
Ramezan’s drama, produced by Aamu Film Company (“The Happiest Day in the Life of Olli Mäki”), already enjoys a strong buzz from earlier industry pitch events such as Helsinki’s Finnish Film Affair where the film was handed the Best Project Award.
The realistic drama is inspired by the director’s own experience as a refugee who fled the Iran-Iraq conflict with his family and landed in Finland in 1990.
Co-written by Ramezan and Antti Rautava, the story follows 13-year-old Ramin Mehdipour, of Iranian origin, who is enjoying a perfect summer in a small Finnish town. A few weeks before the new school year, his family gets the news that the Finnish Immigration Service has...

Artistic director jumped at chance to premiere My Golden Years.
Directors’ Fortnight Edouard Waintrop has revealed he jumped at the chance to premiere Arnaud Desplechin’s My Golden Days at the parallel section’s 47th edition (May 14-24), describing it as the French filmmaker’s best work to date.
“When you see films like those of Desplechin and Garrel, you don’t think twice, you invite them immediately,” Waintrop told ScreenDaily after the line-up announcement on Tuesday, also referring to Philippe Garrel’s In the Shadow of Women.
Both films – and in particular My Golden Days – had been tipped for a slot in Official Selection.
Waintrop would not be drawn on the fact they had ended up in Directors’ Fortnight.
“Why weren’t they selected elsewhere? Ask ‘elsewhere’,” he said.
“My Golden Days represents Arnaud Desplechin’s best work to date and it’s rather incomprehensible that it’s not ‘elsewhere’ but that’s not my problem...

Xavier Dolan just can't stay away from the Cannes Film Festival. Last year's Special Jury prize winner for "Mommy" thought he should have won the Palm d'Or and now he'll be part of the jury deciding that prestigious honor. Oh, my. The Festival also announced its Director's Fortnight selections this morning. This is the section of the festival where "Blue Ruin" made its debut over the past few years. There are usually often one...

Takashi Miike (Yakuza Apocalypse: The Great War Of The Underworld), Fernando León de Aranoa (A Perfect Day starring Benicio del Toro, Tim Robbins, and Olga Kurylenko) and Jaco Van Dormael (a top item on our most anticipated foreign films list, The Brand New Testament stars Catherine Deneuve, Benoît Poelvoorde, Yolande Moreau) are some of the veterans filmmakers joining the previously mentioned Philippe Garrel, Miguel Gomes and Arnaud Desplechin as part the 47th edition of the Directors’ Fortnight. Edouard Waintrop’s programming team happen to be the only ones to have selected Sundance Film Festival items this year with Rick Famuyiwa‘s Dope being selected as the closing night film and Chloé Zhao‘s Songs My Brothers Taught Me finds some love as well. Fellow American filmmaker Jeremy Saulnier also joins them — after having launched Blue Ruin in the section a couple of editions back, he now returns with Green Room.
