Weak Link

I've said it before. If Liz were airlifted to another state and left there, the show would be better. She has no chains on her and when she helps, it's usually to make up for her own bad judgment. Red deals with Berlin and his daughter who are the central issue in much of what goes on. Every time we think we have the big guy, there's another layer. Now we get to Fitch, the mastermind, and he is also a lower part of a greater hierarchy. The scene in the bomb chamber is really intense, showing what masterful actor Alan Alda is. And, of course, as Red has his final "showdown" with Berlin, emptying a quart of vodka, we see how emotions have been sent to the ground.

more twists and turns than a roller coaster

Cinema quality.

Minimal action but the suspense is gripping.

Possibly the best integration of the short and long arcs I have ever seen -- the Blacklist subject for the show is also the individual who has been persecuting Red. Or is he? Continues the theme of fathers and daughters, one which has become unique to the series. (In GRIMM, the theme seems to be pregnancy, in BANSHEE is false identity, in POI it moral values, etc).

No false notes. Spader does not do a Clint Eastwood or John Wayne. Boone completely sells her internal conflict in dealing with her former husband.

And Alan Alda as always is brilliant.

The actual Berlin: conclusion
foamythefearsome27 August 2022
This is how I had hoped the last season would have ended, with a worthy showdown between Reddington and Berlin. In hindsight, I'm glad that they took the time to unveil more information about what happened between the two and therewith stretching it to the next season.

It also progresses the overall story by switching the scope of the series to a new enemy - one that has been hinted in previous episodes, sadly accompanied by the loss of one of the best side characters in the show so far. But then again, this loss went hand in hand with a very touching and powerful scene.

So far, this has been a strong season, with a lot of very different, yet equally amazing episodes in a row. Chapeau!
