Netflix has ordered a new comedy series from Ricky Gervais, Variety has learned.
Titled “After Life,” the series follows Tony (Gervais), who had a perfect life. But after his wife Lisa suddenly dies, Tony changes. After contemplating taking his own life, he decides instead to live long enough to punish the world by saying and doing whatever he likes from now on. He thinks it’s like a Super Power — not caring about himself or anyone else — but it turns out to be tricky when everyone is trying to save the nice guy they used to know.
Gervais created the series and will also executive produce and direct in addition to starring. Charlie Hanson who previously worked with Gervais on shows like “Derek” and “Extras,” will also executive produce. Netflix has ordered six half-hour episodes of the new series.

With Martin Scorsese's The Irishman the latest high profile movie capture for Netflix, where does this leave the multiplex?
Last month it was announced that the distribution rights to Martin Scorsese’s long-awaited mob film, The Irishman, had been purchased by Netflix. This will no doubt be a major coup for the online streaming service. The film is reuniting Scorsese with his greatest muse, Robert De Niro, for the first time since 1995’s Casino, while Al Pacino and Harvey Keitel have also been confirmed. It’s the filmic equivalent of a classic rock supergroup – like The Expendables but it might actually be good.
It won’t be the first time, however, that Netflix has attracted A-list talent. Since 2015, the company has emerged as a major player in original film production, and in doing so it has shaken the foundations of the studio driven system which we all took for granted.

The only part of the filmmaking process that Ricky Gervais dreads is the promotional tour.
“I don’t think it’s good for anyone,” he recently told IndieWire. “We’re begging you to be nice about the movie ’cause every little [bit of promotion] helps, but it’s nothing about the film anymore.”
Fortunately, working with Netflix (which he has done for the past few years) has given Gervais a break from “those five-day, 10-hour junkets in the hotel, where every journalist gets five minutes and wants to kill themselves afterward. Do you know what I mean?”
Gervais says “do you know what I mean?” a lot when you talk to him. He wants to be sure he’s communicating his points clearly. Which is interesting, given that what matters the most to him these days is making sure that whatever he does, he has complete control over it. “That’s all I care about,...

It’s been more than a decade since audiences became obsessed with Ricky Gervais’ “The Office” character, David Brent. Now, the former paper salesman returns in the new film “David Brent: Life on the Road,” about the worst boss ever’s efforts to go on a self-funded tour with his band Foregone Conclusion, all the while still a traveling salesman. But are critics excited for the return of Gervais’ most iconic character? Here’s what they’re saying.
Variety’s Catherine Bray wrote, “Ricky Gervais’ most enduring creation hits the road for one last attempt at cracking showbiz, in a funny if meandering big-screen adventure.” She adds, “It’s a recipe for humor and conflict which, judging by the home-turf success of other recent theatrical transplants of U.K. sitcoms should have no trouble connecting with the original show’s sizable fanbase.”

Ricky Gervais revives his most iconic character David Brent from the influential BBC series “The Office” in the new film “David Brent: Life on the Road.” 12 years after the initial documentary, the former paper salesman returns to the limelight in a “rock ‘n’ roll documentary” as Brent goes on a self-funded tour with his band Foregone Conclusion, all the while still a traveling salesman. The trailer promises plenty of cringe-worthy, painful humor that was a staple of the original series as Brent’s lack of filter or self-awareness puts him and the band in uncomfortable situations. Will Brent finally come to terms with the pitiful reality of his own life or will he keep riding high on delusion touring the country as a “rock star.” Watch the trailer below to find out.

After featuring most of his shows on their platform, and recently releasing his latest movie Special Correspondents, Netflix is staying in Ricky Gervais business. They’ve picked up a spin-off movie from The Office, following David Brenton tour with his band. Directed, written by and starring Gervais, David Brent: Life on the Road follows the same “documentary crew” returning to capture his latest adventure, which finds him as a traveling salesman, still trying to become a rock superstar as he goes on a self-financed tour.
“I’m so glad the mighty Netflix have once again outbid all competitors in North America to show my movie exclusively. This dewy-eyed story of a carer-patient bond rarely deviates from the Hollywood template but is enlivened by spirited showings from Rudd and Craig Roberts
As Netflix and Amazon power ahead, their purchasing muscle is permanently altering the face of contemporary Hollywood, allowing previously fallow and neglected areas of the industry – mid-range, character based dramas and comedies – to flourish in the age of tentpoles and microbudgets.
That’s the theory, anyhow, and this latest addition to the Netflix stable, a dewy-eyed exercise in male bonding with added pseudo-hipster quirk, bears it out. Though it’s not exactly an Earth-shattering development: this, as well as Ricky Gervais’s Special Correspondents, suggests that there might be a good reason why a cinema release for this sort of thing is trickier than it used to be.

Tina Fey and Martin Freeman star in Whiskey Tango Foxtrot, that's finally made it to cinemas. It's been worth the wait...
If you're wondering whether or not Whiskey Tango Foxtrot marks something of a departure for Tina Fey, the answer is yes and no. It's based on a true story and mostly takes place in an active war zone, but it's also very funny and Fey's role as journalist Kim Baker seems tailor-made for her. Happily, the end result is her best big screen leading role to date.
Fey's long-time writing partner Robert Carlock provides the script, based on Baker's memoir The Taliban Shuffle: Strange Days In Afghanistan And Pakistan, whose New York Times review observed that the author presented herself “as a Tina Fey character.” Unsurprisingly, the transition from page to screen has been very smooth since Paramount optioned the book, even with various artistic...

Satirical comedies use humour to expose and ridicule human stupidity often in relation to politics and other contemporary issues. In this sense, Special Correspondents cannot be classed as a satirical comedy – there’s no laughs, there’s no political critique, there’s no real-life relevance. This remake of 2009 French film Envoyés Très Spéciaux marks a career low for Ricky Gervais, and those expecting the wince-inducing laughs of The Office or the razor-sharp viciousness of his Golden Globe performances will be left thoroughly disappointed.

So, will their latest movie offering start turning things around? Alas, no. Special Correspondents follows a radio producer (Ricky Gervais) and a hot shot radio presenter (Eric Bana) who find themselves in the middle of an international incident after faking an on the ground report from a war torn country. The premise isn't exactly clever, however with Bana and Gervais, they do share a decent chemistry. So while the cliches pile up, they do make things somewhat watchable. Watchable is one thing, but humour is another. There is probably two or three moments where you may raise something resembling a smile, but other than that, you won't be doing much laughing. It's not hard to figure out where Special Correspondents went wrong.

Have Ricky Gervais’ edges ever been so blunt? Where is the unabashedly sharp, vicious and cutting asides that hallmarked his presenting stints at the Golden Globes? Or the skin crawling, acute and nuanced observations of the Office? You won’t find any of them here. Ever vocal about the virtues of Netflix, Special Correspondents represents his

The comedian’s new Netflix film is a crude and not-that-current affair
If you asked Ricky Gervais to explain the backlash against him, you can imagine him telling you it’s us who have changed, not him. In today’s culture of safe spaces and preferred pronouns, his brand of caustic wit is no longer acceptable, and won’t be until we all regain the sense of humour we had in 2001, when The Office first went out. It’s a neat story, but as his new Netflix vehicle Special Correspondents makes clear, Gervais is far from the man he was 15 years ago.

Deadpool (Tim Miller)
As Hollywood struggles to reinvent their array of superheroes with each iteration, it’s no surprise that audiences would become hungry for something off the beaten path. While it’s not the first post-modern comic-book adaptation, Deadpool is billed as ushering in a new direction: a fan-spurred, self-aware tentpole that’s R-rated to its core, featuring a wise-ass character (don’t call him...

Gervais and Eric Bana generate little chemistry faking reports of a botched jungle assignment
Hopes are stubbornly high for Ricky Gervais’s decision to revive The Office and David Brent in the cinema later in the year, a creation for which he will always have hall-of-fame status – and it’s incidentally impossible to remember his appearance with David Bowie in Extras with anything other than awe. But there’s frankly little in the way of comedy gold to be mined from Gervais’s latest venture, which he has written and directed.
It’s a mainstream bromantic comedy of medium-budget blandness produced specially for Netflix, and based on the 2009 French film Envoyés Très Spéciaux. The film gives us some satiric hints of Wag the Dog and Tropic Thunder – with a slight touch of the leaden and widely forgotten buddy movie Hollywood Homicide with Josh Hartnett and Harrison Ford. Exclusive: Eric Bana on a return to comedy in Ricky Gervais’ Netflix feature, Special Correspondents
Not many people outside of Australia are aware that Eric Bana begun his career as a comedian – especially given he has since mastered his craft as a dramatic performer. But he returns, for the first time in film, to the genre – with a starring role in Ricky Gervais’ Netflix feature, Special Correspondents. Bana

Do you ever watch a scene and just feel terrible for the actor being forced to deliver the dialogue they're being forced to deliver? Ricky Gervais has revealed that he was in close contact with music icon David Bowie, shortly before his death from liver cancer in January. "I was emailing him two weeks before, so he must have known," the Golden Globes host told BBC Radio 5 Live on Monday. "He kept it from everyone." "What dignity," the comedian added of Bowie's desire for privacy. "He was an amazing man. It was something for him and his family. Dignity to the end. And amazing work to the end." For viewers with an appetite for a fresh helping of Ricky Gervais's comedic signature dish -- sending a hapless, hubris-ridden character down an ever deepening hole of lies, schemes, and increasing anxiety-provoking repercussions -- the comic's new Netflix original film "Special Correspondents" is the banquet you've been waiting for.
That's because the stakes are raised far beyond the cubicle politics of the original BBC version of "The Office" of the ego-driven showbiz inanities of HBO's "Extras": "Special Correspondents," written and directed by Gervais, casts him as a hapless radio engineer teamed with a hard-driving but difficult-to-work-with journalist (Eric Bana) to cover a conflict in Ecuador who, after missing their flight, conspire to convincingly fabricate their reports from the war zone in an effort to avoid getting fired.
But their dispatches only inflame tensions in the real world, prompt them to fake their own kidnapping by mysterious guerrilla forces,...

Ricky Gervais has already hosted the Golden Globes four times, so isn't about time he's given a shot at the Oscars? "I would if they said I could say what I wanted, but they would never say that," the funny man told E! News at the Tribeca Film Festival premiere of his new Netflix movie Special Correspondents. And if by chance he was given free reign, Gervais joked that the Academy would probably give him the boot early on in the show. "I don't want to ruin their lovely night," he said. As for returning to the Globes again, Gervais said, "It's funny because I feel like I get it out of my system and then when it comes around like this time I said no because I was just too...

In his third feature as a writer-director, “Special Correspondents,” comedian Ricky Gervais goes heavy on insults directed at himself. Practically every joke that concerns Gervais in this movie consists of him making an unflattering reference to his physical appearance (“Apparently I’m 25% fat … it’s more than some snacks,” he says), or his hunky sidekick Frank (Eric Bana) making an even more unflattering reference to his physical appearance, to which Gervais’s character always agrees. This attempt at self-awareness finally feels too much like self-loathing to be anywhere close to funny. Gervais offers up a plot as contrived as that toothy.

Should there be a 'ground zero' of knowledge for movie criticism? And what makes a critic effective at their job?
When I sat down to watch It Follows for the first time at the start of last year, I had no idea what I was getting. I'm increasingly an avoider of trailers, and try as much as possible to see films cold. It doesn't always work, but in the case of It Follows, it very much did.
As I’ve written before, the film had a very primal effect on me, in that it had me backing further and further into my seat, genuinely unnerved and more than a little scared by what was happening on screen. I hadn't felt like that watching a film for a long time, and my eventual write-up reflected that. Aside from the subtexts of the movie, which I, in truth, only came to later,...

Sometimes you gotta make the news to get on the news. At least that's the thinking behind a couple of radio journalists who stumble into the story of a lifetime...when they make one up. "Special Correspondents" is the latest from writer/director Ricky Gervais, who with "Life On The Road" also coming this year, is going to spend 2016 trying very hard to make you laugh. If there was any question of Netflix’s increasing reign in the current media landscape, a few new developments will surely sway you to one side. They recently ponied up over $90 million to fund the David Ayer-directed, Will Smith and Joel Edgerton-led sci-fi cop thriller Bright, and just last night they acquired Cary Fukunaga‘s next project, the 10-episode series Maniac starring Emma Stone and Jonah Hill, who have certainly come along way since Superbad. With the Beasts of No Nation director helming every episode, it’ll follow the story of a mental patient who lives in a fantasy world.
Before those two projects, they’ll debut the latest film from Ricky Gervais, Special Correspondents. Directing, writing, and starring in the feature, he joins Erica Bana as the two team as a struggling radio journalist and hapless technician who fake frontline war reports from a NYC hideout.
