Ultraman is back.
The character, created by Eiji Tsuburaya in 1966 with the “Ultra Q” and “Ultraman” television series, is back in a brand-new animated feature called “Ultraman Rising.” It’s due out next year but you can watch the trailer above.
In “Ultraman Rising,” baseball superstar Ken Sato, the new Ultraman, “quickly finds more than he bargained for as he’s forced to raise the offspring of his greatest foe,” according to the official synopsis. The trailer shows him battling a huge monster and then effectively adopting the monster’s child, which puts him at odds with his persona as creature-slaying titan. There’s a wonderful moment in the trailer where Ken shrinks down to his human size but the baby still towers above him.
The voice cast for the animated feature includes Christpher Sean, Gedde Watanabe, Tamlyn Tomita, Keone Young and Julia Harriman. Shannon Tindle, creator of Netflix’s fantastic “Lost Ollie,...

Juliana Hatfield has announced a new addition to her series of covers albums. Juliana Hatfield Sings Elo drops November 17th via American Laundromat Records, while her rendition of “Don’t Bring Me Down” is out now.
As indie rock royalty, it may come as a surprise that Hatfield would enjoy the pop stylings of Electric Light Orchestra. Yet you could easily trace her inarguably catchy music to the band’s melodies. “Elo songs were always coming on the radio when I was growing up. They were a reliable source of pleasure and fascination,” Hatfield said in a statement. “With this album of covers I wanted to get my hands deep into some of the massive ‘70’s hits but I am also shining a light on some of the later work… My task was to try and break all the things down and reconstruct them subtly until they felt like mine.

It’s the weekend, and as usual, Netflix and the various streaming services have got you covered with a whole host of new content going up this Friday, Saturday and Sunday. This weekend’s haul is particularly special, too, as a bunch of hotly awaited movies and TV shows have dropped across the sites today. These include a major new Disney release, the second season of a hit superhero show and a critically acclaimed horror flick.
To begin with, Netflix has added several new titles today. Most notable are Hilary Swank astronaut drama Away and I’m Thinking of Ending Things, a psychological horror from director Charlie Kaufman, starring Jessie Buckley and Jesse Plemons.
Next up, today also bring a huge haul to Disney Plus. While there’s some good stuff to be found elsewhere, including The Wolverine and new puppet talk show Earth to Ned, the highlight is obviously Mulan,...

The weekend is almost here, which means that the numerous combatants in the streaming wars are ready to drop plenty of fresh content to entice their subscribers to stay indoors and settle down with a good movie or TV show. Given the sheer volume of services to choose from these days, audiences are more spoiled for choice than ever, and a lot of people find themselves spending almost as long deciding on what to pick as they do actually watching it.
Disney Plus might not boast the same caliber of original content as Netflix and Amazon Prime, but they’ll definitely have the most-watched title of the weekend, as Mulan finally arrives exclusively on streaming for a one-off fee of $29.99. Theater owners might not be happy about the studio’s decision to pull the latest live-action remake from the big screen, but families and single-person households alike will no doubt...

We’ve reached the end of August, and on Friday of this coming week, Disney Plus will drop a haul of new content to welcome in the new month. The next batch of movies and TV shows added to the streaming service’s library includes a few classic films, some fresh TV episodes and one of the most notable straight-to-streaming releases of the whole year.
This is, of course, Mulan, the live-action remake of the 1998 animated classic. The film was originally set to hit theaters back in March, but it was pulled due to the pandemic. With cinemas still not fully up and running again, Disney has elected to make the groundbreaking decision to release the Liu Yifei-starring movie on Disney Plus – albeit via a new Premiere Access level, meaning audiences have to spend $29.99 to watch it.

After successfully bringing movie theater fare like Artemis Fowl and Hamilton to the smaller screen, Disney+ is going to attempt its most ambitious movie streaming experiment yet in September.

Now, after a long wait, Disney is making the movie available (for $29.99) to Disney+ subscribers.

The full line-up of everything that’s coming to Disney Plus next month has been revealed. Dropping on the first Friday of the month, the live-action remake of the classic animated movie is breaking the mold by going up on D+ alongside a limited theatrical release. As you probably know, though, you’ll have to fork out an additional $30 to watch it, as part of a new Premier Access level to the site.

Today’s noir forecast is vice, kidnapping, murder, suicide, narcotics and a sleazy stolen baby racket! Kino’s third volume of Universal-International pix contains two seldom-screened quality urban noirs. Expect genuine dark themes in these sizable-budget location noirs filmed before Universal pulled most production back onto its one-size-fits-all backlot sets. Barbara Stanwyck dominates one show, while noir stalwarts Richard Conte and Dennis O’Keefe anchor the other two dramas, with dynamic showings by Coleen Gray, Edith Barrett, Peggy Dow, Jeanette Nolan, Meg Randall and especially Gale Storm.

Remember all the way back to yesterday when we wrote about Friends leaving Netflix? Well… another day, another round of outrage over a streaming site removing content.

And the fans are not happy about it, as evidenced by the Tweets below.

From the roar of the T-Rex in “Jurassic Park” to the off-kilter, three-dimensional way Barry (Adam Sandler) travels through an off-kilter aural world in “Punch-Drunk Love,” to sound becoming the principal storyteller amidst the chaos of the D-Day invasion in “Saving Private Ryan,” Gary Rydstrom’s place on the Mount Rushmore of sound designers is secure. It’s a career that stretches back 30-plus years, resulting in 18 Oscar nominations and won seven wins, for projects ranging from “Terminator 2: Judgement Day” to “Titanic.”
Rydstrom’s most productive and longest collaboration has been with Steven Spielberg, but his most long-lasting impact was making Pixar’s digital animation come to life. Rydstrom started his career at Skywalker Sound, which ultimately led him to work on Pixar’s earliest achievements. In 1986, John Lasseter’s first experiment was animating the bouncing lamp in “Luxo, Jr.,” but it was Rydstrom’s springy creak that brought it life.

While 2008’s Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull left the series on a weak note, the team behind Indiana Jones 5 are likely hoping to recapture the thrills of the Indy’s heyday, but they’ll have to do so without the creative input of the original creator of this classic adventure series.
Though George Lucas is reportedly staying on as an executive producer, the fifth Indiana Jones will be the first in the series where the famed filmmaker didn’t have a hand in shaping the story. Speaking to ComingSoon, producer Frank Marshall seemed acceptant of the situation and respectful of the legacy that Lucas has left, saying:
“I love being with George and having his input, but life changes and we’re moving on. He moved on. We’re very respectful of the original intentions of the movie, certainly Harrison’s character. The serialization of what the original intention was.

“A Midsummer Night’s Dream” is purportedly the most-produced of all the Bard’s plays, but neither that nugget nor its cinematically friendly fantasy elements has done it many favors on film. Hollywood’s most famous stab was a notorious flop — stage titan Max Reinhardt’s garish 1935 Warner Bros. extravaganza featuring such unlikely (and highly variable) Shakespearean actors as Dick Powell, James Cagney, Mickey Rooney and Joe E. Brown. An almost equally starry 1999 effort, shot in Italy with Kevin Kline, Michelle Pfeiffer, Calista Flockhart and Christian Bale, wasn’t much better.
Since then there’s been the lamentably self-explanatory “A Midsummer Night’s Rave,” and the inexplicable “Strange Magic,” one Disney cartoon that children of all ages found easy to resist. That’s 80 years of evidence suggesting “Dream” might best be left sleeping by American filmmakers.
All the more surprising, then, that director-adapter Casey Wilder Mott’s debut feature proves...

‘A Midsummer Night’s Dream’ Trailer: Shakespeare’s Classic Comedy Gets Reimagined As Hollywood Farce
The enduring charm of William Shakespeare’s classic comedy “A Midsummer Night’s Dream” has translated to innumerable adaptations over the years, including big screen outings like the popular 1999 Michael Hoffman feature and even, oddly enough, the 2015 animated film “Strange Magic.” More than four centuries since its original creation, the story of befuddled and betwixt friends and lovers who are literally bewitched during a wild night in the forest is as fun (and funny) as ever. Now, it’s getting another update, this one from first-time filmmaker Casey Wilder Mott, who has translated the tale into a delirious-looking Hollywood farce.
The film stars Rachael Leigh Cook as Hermia and Lily Rabe as her best friend Helena, along with Finn Wittrock as Demetrius and Hamish Linklater as Lysander, both of whom are consumed with love for Hermia. Mott’s cast also includes Paz De La Huerta as Hippolyta, Avan Jogia as Puck,...

MaryAnn’s quick take… An essential history lesson with a smart smack of relevance for today (because feminism always has to be relitigated). It’s also warm, funny, and hugely entertaining. I’m “biast” (pro): I’m desperate for movies about women
I’m “biast” (con): not a sports fan at all
(what is this about? see my critic’s minifesto)
That saying about those not remembering the past being condemned to repeat it? Of course it’s true… but sometimes it’s not an accident that the past gets forgotten. Sometimes the squashing of history — and the continuation of history into the present — is deliberate. Feminists know this: Women are constantly having to reinvent feminism, refight the same battles, because they don’t stay won. A brief moment of small triumph very quickly gets drowned out by major cultural pushback; women may savor victory only long enough...

Strange Magic was supposed to be George Lucas’ swansong, his final big budget motion picture —as a producer, mind you, not director— before his inevitable retirement from the movie business. Alas, that didn’t quite happen. Strange Magic was released in American theatres with little fanfare, and was a colossal failure at the box office. Despite having a budget of approximately $70-$100 million, the film only managed to gross $13.6 million worldwide, opening at #7 during its first weekend in the States. Needless to say, pretty much nobody saw it. Critics weren’t any kinder. The film currently has a 16% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes, its reviews go from bad (“one of the most dismal animations ever released under the Disney umbrella”), to vitriol (“this...

MaryAnn’s quick take… Hard to believe it took 13 years to get a sequel to our screens and still have it show not a hint of Bad Santa’s inspiration or subversion. I’m “biast” (pro): loved the first film
I’m “biast” (con): didn’t see the need for a sequel
(what is this about? see my critic’s minifesto)
Hard to believe that the notorious anti-Christmas classic Bad Santa is 13 years old. Even harder to believe that this sequel — the unimaginatively titled Bad Santa 2 — took so long to get to our screens and yet show not a lick of the first movie’s inspiration or subversion. It took more than a decade to come up with what is little more than a pale imitation of an original that had wrapped itself up very satisfyingly? Why bother if there isn’t something new to add?

You’re supposed to remake the bad movies and rip off the good ones, but the people behind “Trolls” apparently got their wires crossed by stealing from the worst. This new animated feature, premiering at the London Film Festival a month before it hits theaters stateside, combines the barely-there characterization and irritating cutesiness of “The Smurfs” with the hideous character design and awful pop covers of “Strange Magic.” The film begins with lumbering ogre giants known as the Bergens preparing for the holiday of Trollstice, the one day a year they get to experience happiness by eating a troll. Much to.

In his dedication speech at the opening of Disneyland, Walt Disney said that he hopes the institution “will be a source of joy and inspiration for the world,” and over the past 60 years, that wish has come true. With each new addition to the park, Disneyland becomes a more inclusive attraction that seeks to reach the most people everywhere. Case in point: Disneyland will soon unveil a new “Star Wars”-themed land at their Anaheim park. Deadline reports that they’ve already started prepping the area for attractions, including a Vr-controlled Millennium Falcon, Han Solo’s famous spaceship. It will be the largest “land” at the park. Check out an artist’s rendering of the park below.

What’s happening in an alternate universe out there where George Lucas followed up Thx 1138 and American Graffiti not with Star Wars but with something else? If there were no Star Wars (or fewer Star Wars), what cinematic gifts would Lucas have given to the world instead? Would there be anything greater than Red Tails and Strange Magic left in him? That’s the perennial question Francis Ford Coppola has us thinking about again. In a Vanity Fair story published on Wednesday, the Godfather filmmaker said this of his American Zoetrope co-founder: “George [Lucas] is kind of a genius, but I think it’s a pity he got so [absorbed in that one franchise]. I hope George isn’t offended, but the truth of the matter is that Star Wars cost us 10 new George Lucas films that would have been wonderful.” What original work would we see if Hollywood weren’t so focused on sequels and remakes?...

Women behaving badly. Women refusing to grow up. I mean, I would love it if The Movies reverted back to the days of Bringing Up Baby and The Thin Man, with men and women actually believing that 40something is cool, and dressing for dinner and having cocktails at six and solving mysteries and secretly aiding the resistance and such. But if that’s not going to happen, and movies are going to be overpopulated by manchildren playing video games and ogling women and wallowing in haphazard celebrations of adolescent testosterone,...

George Lucas produces the Ilm animated fantasy, Strange Magic. Here's Mark's review of a curious genre mash-up...
Since George Lucas got out of the Star Wars business, he's been lending his Hollywood heft to some long-gestating passion projects that might be difficult to produce independently elsewhere. He started developing Red Tails, a war movie about the Tuskegee airmen, back in 1988 and eventually served as producer and an uncredited co-director on the 2012 movie.
Lucasfilm's latest, Strange Magic, is directed by Oscar-winning sound designer Gary Rydstrom, but it's also been around for much longer than you'd think. 15 years ago, while working on that pesky prequel trilogy, Lucas started thinking about making a film for his daughters. “Just like Star Wars was designed for 12-year-old boys,” Lucas told Wired upon the film's Us release in January, “Strange Magic was designed for 12-year-old girls.”
If that sounds a little reminiscent of when John Travolta...

Love and controversy — in retrospect. An older and wiser Evan Rachel Wood looked back at her controversial relationship with Marilyn Manson in a brand-new interview with Net-a-Porter.com's The Edit on Thursday, Aug. 20. "I thought I was in love," the Strange Magic actress said of her relationship, which kicked off in 2006, when she was just 19 and he was 36. "I wasn’t doing it to prove a point or be rebellious. I wanted to break a mold for sure — I knew I was edgier, [...]...

Time for a little mid-year check on the Where Are the Women? project, U.S. edition. (See here for the U.K. version. The numbers are almost identical.)
From January through the end of June, 2015, there have been 73 films that have had wide releases in the United States. (This list includes some films that opened at the very end of December 2014 and so had the vast majority of their runs in 2015. It also includes some awards bait that opened in limited release in late 2014 but didn’t open wide until early 2015. These figures also mostly apply to Canada, but there may have been some Canada-only wide releases that I am not aware of and don’t have access to.) These films are, in rough order of release:
Wild
Into the Woods
The Imitation Game
The Gambler
Unbroken
Top Five

Shakespeare’s plays have been interpreted in many different ways. The newest one, beautifully animated, is George Lucas’ Strange Magic. It is based on Midsummer Night’s Dream but uses modern music to enhance the story. The story begins explaining the separation of two kingdoms. There is the Fairy Kingdom, light and sunny, and the Dark Kingdom, dank and shadowed. The two realms are separated by a row of primrose flowers and grow between the light and shadows. The ruler of the Fairy kingdom has two daughters. Marianna (voiced by Evan Rachel Wood) is spirited and adventurous. Dawn (voiced by Meredith Anne Bull) […]...

Strange Magic is the first animated feature George Lucas has had a hand in since 1988’s The Land Before Time, and he should have left well enough alone.
Lucas gets a story credit and served as executive producer, but this has the whiff of a vanity project for cowriter and director Gary Rydstrom, making his feature debut. Yes, legendary sound designer Gary Rydstrom, who’s won seven Oscars in that field and has created some of the most memorable movie noises ever for films including Terminator 2, Jurassic Park, and Minority Report, but who, the evidence of this movie suggests, has no business writing and directing a movie.

American Sniper Sean offered up his review of the new American Sniper Blu-ray and seems to generally agree with my take on the film itself, but does seem to give it a little leeway thanks to one of the disc's few special features. I'll never watch this movie again, but I'm sure it will do gangbusters with the crowd that propelled it to become the highest grossing domestic release of 2014 at $349.6 million, topping The Hunger Games: Mockingjay - Part 1 by $12 million.
