- Meredith finds herself in the middle of a showdown between Derek and Pierce about whether to operate on a patient's brain or heart first. Meredith takes Pierce's side, and Hunt steps in as the arbiter, telling the patient and her mother that he'll make a decision on which approach to take.
Stephanie is doing an ultrasound on April and accidentally reveals the sex of the baby, which April didn't want to know, by referring to the fetus as "he." Stephanie notices the baby is "sitting like a little Buddha," and April tells Jackson, who stepped in later, about the baby's position -- but not the sex -- and Stephanie notes that April said the baby was in the same position last time.
Callie has a couple of the veterans racing each other on practicing leg movements.
Arizona and Dr. Herman go at it a bit over Arizona asking too many questions about Dr. Herman's brain tumor. Dr. Herman takes Arizona off their surgery.
Derek gets a visit from a White House representative. She tells him the president doesn't like taking "no" for an answer.
One of the vets, Jordan, practices on a robotic artificial leg and, trying to walk up a step with it, falls backward and seriously injures his head. Blood spills from it. Hunt quickly starts to blame Callie for pushing him too hard.
Stephanie brings April's ultrasound to Jo and tells her she thinks something is wrong with the baby.
Callie is feeling like everything she touches falls apart. Bailey is choking down a kale smoothie, and Webber is trying to stay out of Pierce's way.
Amelia explains her past drug problems to Hunt, saying she didn't want to hang her place at the hospital on Derek's reputation. He tells her everyone has "something," including himself.
Arizona calls Dr. Herman's doctor and claims that Dr. Shepherd is asking for her brain scans.
Debra, the White House rep, tells Derek she's under orders not to come back to D.C. without a "yes" from Derek. He tells her that turning down the job was a hard decision, but it's done.
Amelia is the one who got Dr. Herman's scans and she asks Arizona what's going on. They look at the scans together. Amelia promises to keep it to herself after Arizona assures her that "everyone who needs to know knows."
Hunt takes another opportunity to tell Callie she should've stopped the vets from competing with each other.
Arizona walks in on Dr. Herman having sex in an on-call room with Graham, the other fellow.
Derek steps in again and tries to take Pierce's patient, but Meredith again insists he's trying to pull rank and that she and Pierce are confident in their approach to fix the young woman's heart first. Derek is upset when Pierce makes the call to go ahead with her own surgery first.
Stephanie shows Arizona the ultrasound and Arizona says it looks like "Type 2 or 3." Stephanie reveals that she hasn't said anything to April or Jackson yet, and Arizona tells her not to.
Callie tries to encourage Rick, the other vet, to go on with the artificial leg experiment but he tells her that he's not going to take Jordan's spot, which he earned by doing better on his simulations.
Arizona finds Callie with her head down and they have a short heart to heart, encouraging each other by saying they'll each "figure it out." Arizona asks Callie if she misses her, and she says, "Of course."
"Just not enough," Arizona suggests before walking away.
Derek and Webber watch from the gallery while Meredith and Pierce operate on Holly. They each talk about how they're being misunderstood by Ellis Grey's daughters. Something goes wrong in surgery and Pierce asks Meredith if they're still watching. They are.
Dr. Herman tells Arizona not to steal her orgasms. She says she doesn't have many left, so she doesn't want Arizona getting in the way and talking to Graham.
Meredith is starting to question whether she is just digging her heels in about the patient because Derek is on the other side of the argument.
Hunt asks Amelia if she has "people" to talk to and help her through her situation. She says she does, and she goes to meetings, then offers to be there for Hunt if he needs anyone.
Callie tells Hunt she's going to take a step back on the veterans project, but he's not having it.
Holly comes in to do a brain check on Holly, and it looks like she's doing well. She gives a thumbs up. Derek says the brain abscess surgery will happen the next day.
Arizona brings the ultrasound to Dr. Herman, who confirms the suspicions that the baby will be born with a congenital defect resulting in weak bones that break easily. Dr. Herman says if the baby survives birth it would like have just days or weeks to live. She tells Arizona, after realizing that it's a friend's baby, that all she can do is "be there for her."
April sees Stephanie and tells her she forgives her for spilling the beans about the baby's sex. Stephanie gives her a hug and tells her she's sorry. April is bait confused by the effusive display.
Pierce asks Webber why he sided with Derek and he says it was a coin toss. He tells her calculated the various risks and benefits and came to his decision. She says she'd like to know more about his process, and they make a plan to have coffee the next day.
Jo expresses some of her jealous feelings about Meredith always being at the house. He tells her that house is always open for any of the doctors who are going through their things. And it will stay that way. She understands, they kiss and go home.
Callie and Hunt walk Rick through the artificial leg.
Arizona comes in a panic and starts to pull Dr. Herman's brain scans down, saying that Dr. Herman is just dying and she's not a risk, but Amelia tells her she thinks she can remove the tumor and save Dr. Herman's life.
Stephanie and Dr. Herman have another conversation in a walkway about April and Jackson's baby, but Dr. Herman assures Stephanie there's nothing that can be done. Dr. Herman ends by saying it's too bad, because the baby's "so cute, sitting like a little Buddha." Jackson steps out of the elevator to hear the end of the exchange and, after Dr. Herman has walked away, asks Stephanie what that was about.
Meredith and Derek have it out about how she feels like he didn't trust her. He acknowledges that he resents her because she hasn't been behind him since he made the decision to stay, and that he did it for her. Derek starts to storm out of the hospital and tells her that he was offered the D.C. job again and she tells him to take it. She all but dares him to. He calls Debra, the White House rep, and tells her he's accepting it -- staring Meredith down throughout the entire, brief conversation. Meredith watches him walk away.
