- After escaping purgatory, a warlock who triggered the Salem witch trials returns to find a dangerous book of spells. Meanwhile, Abbie attempts to trust Frank Irving again, while Henry struggles to find his identity.
- Auctioneers at Claridge's Auction House prep for a show and unearth the journal of John Dee, Queen Elizabeth's most trusted advisor and, according to legend, the royal court's sorcerer.
As the woman locks the journal in a case, she turns around to find a man in a black hat and cloak staring at her ominously. He punches through the glass and grabs the journal, ignoring the commands of the gun-wielding security guard. The man slices open his arm with a knife and spills his boiling blood onto the floor, bringing the guard and the woman to their knees as they bleed from their eyes.
Elsewhere, Abbie responds to a text from Ichabod Crane to meet at a strange address. He's house hunting. "Sooner or later I have to find a place of my own, preferably with granite countertops," he says. Abbie tells him about the murders -- the victim's blood boiled. Crane recognizes the journal as the grand grimoire, a big ol' book of magic.
They consult Katrina, who is practicing her magic skills, which are getting stronger. She thinks someone might have brought Dee with a summoning spell, possibly someone who escaped from Purgatory when Moloch rose. Katrina hopes Henry's actions brought him some peace.
Cut to Henry, not dead, but in a low rent motel room watching TV. The manager comes to respond to his complaint about the hot water being out. He paid upfront and in cash.
Henry sees a news report about the boiled blood.
In the archives, Abbie brings Crane a report on the other blood found at the murder scene, which had jimson weed in it. Some magic practitioners take it to boost their power. Crane explains that all magic comes from different sources and blood magic is among the darkest.
Abbie gets security footage from the auction house.
Katrina recognizes the man in the cloak as Solomon Kent, the warlock all witches fear, who had been in Purgatory.
Flash to Kent cutting into his shoulder to wipe his blood on the grimoire and summon a fiery force.
Abbie researches Kent, who was a spiritual man in Salem, Masschusetts. Katrina's Dutch grandmother, Helena Van Tassel, moved there to be part of Kent's coven, but he lost his way when he became infatuated with a young woman named Sarah.
Kent thought Sarah liked him, but she liked someone else. He tried to give her a knife to replace her dull one, but when she rebuffed his advances, he accidentally stabbed her. Then he turned to dark magic to transform Sarah's face into a demon and announced to the town that there were witches among them.
Helena tried later to convince Kent to admit his lie, which was spreading and making people suspicious of witches, but he held her up as another witch and saw that she was hanged.
Solomon Kent essentially launched the Salem Witch Trials, but eventually the coven's surviving members combined to hunt him down and sent him to Purgatory.
At the auction house, Katrina visits the display case and finds that the book is in pieces. Kent won't have any power until he finds the missing pages. Abbie finds the auction items came in separate shipments and calls to track the second half.
She finds Frank Irving tailing her. He doesn't blame her for not trusting him and tells her Katrina says his soul is his own.
Henry Parrish returns to his motel room to find the manager's teenage son, Ronnie, working on his faucet. The kid admires Henry's hand carved model and shares his own. Henry asks about the boy's mother, who walks with a cane and limp. She was hit by a drunk driver. Ronnie says his mom is strong then jokes, "Who needs a dad, right?"
Abbie gets the location of the rest of the auction items. She tells Crane about running into Irving and he makes a comment about Irving letting go of the past. That makes him wonder if Kent is unable to do the same and might be planning to resurrect Sarah using a spell in the grimoire. If he opens the doors to the Afterlife, countless other dead souls will come through.
Abbie and Crane head to the warehouse where the auction items are arriving. Katrina is using magic to track Kent and the grimoire.
They discuss their role as witnesses, with Crane saying they are fighting for love and they must never lose sight of that or risk ending up like Kent.
They find Kent rifling through boxes in the back of the warehouse. He blasts Abbie and Crane off their feet with magic, then Katrina joins them and faces him. He recognizes her as her ancestor and senses seeds of darkness in her. "Have you never wondered why your powers betray you when you need them the most? You are walking the wrong path," Kent says. He says Katrina won't be able to defeat him because she's not at peace with herself.
Abbie and Crane wake up in time to see Kent slice open his wrists and unleash blood demons. Kent gets the missing pages to the grimoire. Katrina goes back to confront him as Abbie and Crane track down the remaining blood demon.
As Kent begins his spell using the grimoire, Katrina is able to slow him with magic.
Abbie shoots the remaining blood demon and they rush to Katrina.
Kent fights her down then tells her she's formidable, but if she gives in to the darkness, she will find her true self.
Katrina gives in to darkness for a moment, and her eyes cloud over white. Kent gets away.
Back at the cabin, Katrina is rattled.
Abbie goes to meet Irving to see what he knows about returning from the dead. Not much. When Abbie leaves, Irving glowers.
At the motel, Henry hears a couple of occupants hassling Ronnie and his mom. Henry watches as they scoff at her threat to call the cops, but then returns to his room without a word when they challenge him.
At the cabin, Katrina's magic has still not recovered from going against Kent. Crane tells Abbie that he heard Kent say "I am the traveler" in ancient Aramaic.
Abbie pulls out her ancestor Grace's journal, which references a Traveler spell which allows the user to jump into the past. Even without having seen the "Back to the Future" movies, Crane knows that Kent rewriting history could have heavy consequences.
To attempt the spell, Kent will need into a convergence of mystical fields -- the lay lines around Sleepy Hollow -- and a celestial event when the moon is close to the earth at midnight. Irving joins them, Abbie invited him because Jenny is off chasing the "orb of magical awesomeness" or something.
Abbie wants someone in the forensic lab to help them against the jimson weed. Abbie wants a generator and fire hose to mimic the elements that Katrina draws her power from.
Out in the forest, Kent begins the spell and opens a portal to his time. He sees Sarah. But Crane lobs a tiny grenade that knocks him off his feet. Crane uses illusions to hide from Kent. Irving shoots him in the neck with a dart full of atropine, which is found in jimson weed, which causes hallucinations in high doses. When Kent steps in a puddle, Crane tells him in the 21st Century they make their own. Abbie cranks the generator and fries Kent long enough for Crane to tackle him and pummel him for threatening Katrina.
Abbie and Crane go looking for Irving, but he finds Kent's body. He picks up the grimoire and snaps Kent's neck, causing him to disintegrate. He lies to them when they come back and Crane, at least, is suspicious.
Back at the cabin, Crane tells Abbie he was somewhat unnerved by the similarity between his history and Kent's. They leave to get beers, with Katrina saying she's resting. When they leave, Katrina uses her magic to lift a flower from its vase. Then she calls on dark forces to turn it to stone and make it explode. Her nose bleeds.
In the light of day, Henry confronts the three troublemaking motel occupants and cheerily tells them he killed his father and has been without purpose for the past three weeks, but they reminded him that there will always been sheep and wolves in the world. He announces that he's a wolf, then uses his magic to easily take them out, one by one.
Henry goes into the woods and meets with Frank Irving. They shake hands and Irving hands over the grimoire. Moloch is dead, and so are his plans. Henry is no longer the Horseman of War and doesn't want to be defined by anyone else. From here on, destiny bends to his will.
