Horsin' Around at Christmas.

Warning: Spoilers
For my final viewing of 2018,I decided that I'd end the year by watching a X-Mas special from a TV series I've not seen any eps of. Spotting it on Netflix,I decided it was time to see the Horseman ride in.

View on the ep:

Breaking the 4th wall by the episode being wraparound by BoJack watching the X-Mas special of his cancelled TV show, the script by Raphael Bob-Waksberg slyly rolls out deconstructions on the TV Comedy X-Mas specials, from recurring gags falling to land,to the (possibly Married with Children inspired?) rowdy crowd yelling out at the cast/characters. Along with the very good voice work from the main cast,Kristen Schaal gives a funny, fittingly sickly sweet voice as Sabrina, who pushes around the less than subtle "message" of the ep, sharply satirising Comedy shows which force a moral message in,as Bojack celebrates Christmas with his past X-Mas specials.

BoJack Horseman Christmas Special Sabrina's Christmas Wish

Thank God for Christmas.

I'm not one to get in the Christmas spirit, but with the amount of content that is put out during this season, it's hard not to get excited.

And leave it to Netflix to give me just what I needed to get in that festive mood that everyone's always talking about. Yes, Netflix has put out a special episode of BoJack Horseman just for the holidays. And it is brilliant.

The episode actually revolves around BoJack and Todd watching a Christmas episode of "Horsin' Around," the show that BoJack starred in during the 90's.

With commentary from the both Todd and BoJack, and tons of exploited 90's stereotypes, hilarity ensues. It's amazing how accurately the show can portray "bad sitcom acting" in a cartoon.

This actually might be my favorite episode of BoJack to date, and it was just what I needed to get out of my "BoJack withdrawal."

Award Time! (Spoilers)

Best Scene: The heart-to-heart discussion on Sabrina's bed in which BoJack tells Sabrina he's glad her parents are dead.

Best Off-Screen Character: The guy in the live-studio-audience who keep shouting

Conclusion

Seeing as it is the holidays, and since I am now in the giving mood, I'll give this episode of BoJack Horseman a 9.5/10.

Happy holidays everyone, and happy new year too!

S1 Christmas Special: The awkward dated sitcom works best in small doses, but it is still quite funny as a special
bob the moo14 January 2016
I recently finished season 1 of this show and was quite taken by the mix of humor, imagination, character, and attention to detail – so when I saw there was a Christmas special I took the chance to follow into that. As BoJack observes early in this episode, Christmas specials are rarely much cop compared to the main series of whatever the show is, and so it is confirmed here. Part of the issue is what the show takes as its plot; essentially we watch an old Christmas episode of Horsin' Around, BoJack's old sitcom.

Now, as part of the main show, the sitcom was something shown briefly in clips, so the joke of it being the worst of sitcom clichés didn't ever have to stand up for long, plus was supported by the show doing it as one of lots of other things. By making the episode almost wholly the old show, it means it really is working in one area – which is to mock the sitcoms of old. This limits the special when compared to the show itself; although it does have modern sections, mostly we are in this one area. The writing adds in some good lines and sequences, but mostly you are watching a deliberately cheesy sitcom, albeit with good laughs from that.

It does have enough of the show's humor and style to be worth watching, but at the same time the detail and approach of the show is missing in the special.

More BoJack!

Warning: Spoilers
After binging all 6 seasons I really needed more. It's interesting to see all the references to future events that hadn't yet happened when this special was released. Like him suggesting to go to olivias prom before he went to penny's prom. I wish there was a season 7 on the way.

Basic and very annoying episode. Not funny at all.
