A Welcomed Return

Just a week before the announcement of the show's return, I was remarking to myself while watching a re-run, how nice it would be to have the show back. And like magic, it came back.

When a show is moved from one country to another, you're always worried there will be several changes from casting to even the music, but worry not! The changes are minor.

The basic formula is still the same: Penn & Teller sit there and try to be fooled, then take a whack of the end. The theme music from the original UK run is still being used, the stage looks basically the same and the episode ends with the duo doing their own trick to some poor unsuspecting schlub from the audience. The magicians are still introduced with a background story and the same graphic with their name. Even Ross is back as the host.

The minor changes: while the theme music is kept, the composers who scored the original run are gone and library stock music is used; Ross no longer has the beard and unkempt hair (which he looks a little odd without); magicians who fool them get a trophy now; and the biggest change is a magic trick pulled off before the new season: Penn has magically lost about a 150 lbs. The new look for Penn has kind of lightened his voice a tad and left him with this look that when he's watching something he looks like he's befuddled and confused and maybe pooped himself (he needs to touch himself up a little for the thinner variant). Aside from some other changes in producers and production members in the credits, the show you loved is back and was thankfully not altered from what drew you in in the first place.

It's not a spectacular season opening but good fun nonetheless. Highly recommended for new and old fans.
