- Hurled back in time to the Revolutionary War by Katrina's spell, Abbie must convince the then-Ichabod that she's there to help him while Katrina enlists the Headless Horseman to aid her in her vengeance.
- Ichabod Crane ducks and dodges his way across a Civil War battlefield, firing and taking people on with his bayonet. When it clears, someone brings word about a woman who wants to talk to him, who has information about a Hessian soldier with a bow on his hand. This gets Crane's attention and he goes to see Abbie.
He goes to see her in lock-up but need convincing about the Horseman. Abbie tells him the Horseman has a new powerful ally, a woman. When Crane gets orders, Abbie gets his attention by knowing what they say.
Meanwhile in a battlefield medical tent, Katrina goes looking for Ichabod, but learns that he is with Abbie and not, as she expected, lying mortally wounded after being cut down by the Horseman.
Abbie and Crane walk through a battlefield after the fighting. Crane doesn't know what to make of a decapitated corpse with a cauterized wound. Abbie tells Crane the Horseman is Death. Then she recites back George Washington's words to Crane about fighting for the future of the world and tells him they'll meet in 200 years. But now they won't because she saved him.
Crane has to convince his superior to let him escort Abbie to an encampment for runaway slaves. She has the three mile carriage ride there to convince Crane. She begins reciting everything she knows about him, including how he met Katrina. She tells him they're guided in their efforts by books by Washington, Jefferson and Franklin. Washington and Jefferson are in Virginia, so Abbie suggests they head to Franklin to back up her story.
Meanwhile, Abraham scours the battlefield looking for Ichabod. Katrina finds him instead and suggests that both Ichabod and Abbie must die. She wants to help find them and kill them, with the aid of the grand grimoire.
Crane and Abbie show up on Franklin's doorstep. Crane isn't sure how Franklin will receive them, but he's immediately tickled to hear how all of his inventions catch on in the future. He knows about the grand grimoire and that it supposedly allows time travel. He asks about the woman helping the Hessian. Abbie isn't ready to say it's Katrina, so instead says it's a witch.
Franklin sends Crane out of the room for a book then asks why Abbie pointedly who the witch is. She tells him and he advises against telling Crane. Franklin suggests there's a window when the traveler's spell can be reversed, sending her back to her time. They're heading to Abbie's ancestor Grace Dixon at Franklin Manor.
Crane returns and they catch him up on the plan, but moments later the Horseman busts down the door. Crane fights him with his sword and Abbie grabs two nearby pistols. Franklin lights a small bomb and prepares to throw it, but doesn't get the chance before the Horseman decapitates him. After he's fallen, the bomb detonates and the Horseman is momentarily stunned by falling rubble. Abbie hustles Crane out of there.
Crane takes Abbie back to prison, accusing her of leading the Horseman to him. Abbie tries to convince him the Horseman wasn't after Franklin, he was after her and Crane. He demands to know what she discussed with Franklin. Abbie tells him if she were lying she'd never say what she's about to say, then tells him Katrina is the witch and is pregnant with their son. He walks out as she urges him to check her cell phone for a photo of them.
Crane's commanding officer relieves him of duty for disobeying orders.
Crane goes home and finds Katrina preparing a concoction he knows is for pregnant women, but she says it's for the neighbor as she uses her magic to lift a knife behind his back. He tells her about a "mad woman" and Katrina asks where to find her. They're interrupted by soldiers summoning him directly to General Washington. Crane notices a spell book open on the table before he leaves.
Crane makes a stop back at the prison to look for Abbie's phone.
In her cell, Abbie gets to work on a way out.
Crane manages to unlock the phone. The password is his birthday. He finds all of Abbie's photos of him.
Abbie pries a nail loose from a jail bench and is working the lock when Crane's commanding officer Col. Sutton comes to pay her a visit.
Meanwhile, Crane finds a video of him in her phone and believes her.
When Colonel Sutton enters her cell and menaces her, Abbie is easily able to get him in a chokehold and knock him out, noting the advances in close quarter combat.
Crane arrives and announces he's on her side. They take tunnels halfway to Frederick's Manor then walk in the forest. He tells Abbie he thinks Katrina is pregnant and he saw a book that could be the grand grimoire. Abbie tells him the Katrina he knows isn't the same on who's after him now.
Sutton goes to Katrina for medical help. She scrapes some of Katrina's blood from claw marks on Sutton's arm and is able to see Abbie and Crane are headed to Frederick's Manor. When Sutton asks how she knows, she announces she's a witch and kills him.
Abbie and Crane arrive and talk to Grace Dixon, who quickly recognizes Abbie as a witness. She knows the spell to use to reverse the traveler's spell and send Abbie back to the moment the spell was cast, but says it'll require the magic that normally shields the house.
As Grace is working, Katrina and the Horseman arrive. Ichabod goes outsideto face them, noting that if Grace succeeds, it won't matter if he dies. Abbie wishes him luck and hugs him. Grace insists Abbie stay nearby for the spell to work, then has her read the words to cast the spell. As Abbie recties, outside, The Horseman swings his axe at Ichabod's unprotected neck. Time slows for everyone and before the blade hits Crane, Katrina realizes what's happening, but it's too late.
The spell works and Abbie and Katrina are back in the old town hall. Katrina rages and turns her magic on Abbie, choking her and hoisting her into the air. Crane goes for a nearby knife, but Katrina yanks it away with magic. Crane goes after her, knocking the grand grimoire out of her hand. Abbie falls to the floor, alive, and Crane turns the knife on Katrina. He plunges it into her stomach and she collapses on the floor, seeing a vision of Henry.
She dies in Ichabod's arms. Then, like Henry, her body turns to ashes and disintegrates.
"You had no choice," Abbie says.
"Yes, I did. We all did," he says.
Later, Frank Iriving and Jenny join them. Frank explains that Henry's death released his soul.
Abbie tells them what Grace said, that the most crucial battles lie ahead and all that matters is that they're there for each other.
