Edinburgh Manor was operated at a county "poor farm" from 1850 to 1910. During its era, it was described as a "comfortable retreat for the lazy, able-bodied and willingly dependent applicants," and housed the poor, incurably insane, and physically disabled. Tenants were given shelter and food for their labor, in exchange for performing farming work with agriculture and livestock.
