No exaggeration: changed my life

I was a kid interested in only math and science, until this song and video came out. The pure artistry of this work, and how holistically and masterfully it tied in with the visual and tonal aesthetic of the album as a whole, opened up an entire world to me, of music, art and poetry. I've never been the same since.

Warning: Spoilers
"Tonight, Tonight" is a song by The Smashing Pumpkins and here we have the music video for that song. it is from 1996, so already over 2 decades old and it runs for slightly over 4 minutes. The people behind the camera in charge here are married couple Jonathan Dayton and Valerie Faris and they are not just prolific and successful music video directors, but also went on to make "real" movies and their career culminated so far in the Oscar-winning "Little Miss Sunshine". And their impact on this 250-second music video here is clearly visible as the visual side and the story as well are easily the most memorable component in here. It is at times a beautiful watch and feels almost like a tribute to the old days of cinema, even if not all of it is working out really, like with the women in costume towards the end. But the visual side is still infinitely better than the audible side. What a generic and forgettable song by the Pumpkins here. I have no idea why anybody would ever want to buy the song. So it is one of the rare occasions (of music not starring hot female singers) where it is certainly better to watch the music video than just listen to the track I guess. As a whole, it is a thumbs-down though. Not recommended.
