"How to Be a Latin Lover" is predictable, but pleasant, sweet and funny.
dave-mcclain30 April 2017
Eugenio Derbez. Recognize the name? If not, you're probably not a big fan of Latin cinema. But even if you watch only English-language movies and avoid subtitles like the plague, you're likely to hear more about Derbez. He's a Mexican actor, comedian and writer, as well as a director and producer of TV and movies. According to Wikipedia, Derbez "is one of the most influential creative forces in Latin America, and is one of the most recognized actors among the Spanish-speaking population in the US." His 2013 comedy-drama "Instructions Not Included", which he starred in, co-wrote and directed, became the first Spanish-language film to top $100 million in worldwide box office. In 2014, Variety magazine called Derbez "the most influential Hispanic male in the entertainment industry." 2017 marks his first starring role in a (mostly) English-language feature film, the comedy "How to Be a Latin Lover" (PG-13, 1:55).

Maximo (Derbez) is living the dream. He's well-ensconced in the lap of luxury and he's a kept man – thanks to his very rich and much older wife (Renée Taylor). This was his plan all along – to use his Latin charms to get a sugar mama and never have to work a day in his life. Maximo was doing great, living in a mansion, driving expensive cars, etc., until his benefactor decides to give him his walking papers, which, in this case, is a copy of the prenup that he signed years earlier. With no money and nowhere to live, he wants to move in with his fellow gigolo, Rick (Rob Lowe), but that wouldn't go over very well with Rick's rich (and kinky) aged lover, Millicent (Linda Lavin). This lands Maximo on the doorstep of his estranged sister, Sara (Salma Hayek), single mother to nerdy, sweet, 10-year-old Hugo (Raphael Alejandro). None of the three of them are particularly happy about this turn of events, but, hey, family is family, right? Maximo fully intends for his humiliating slumming with Sara and Hugo to be a temporary arrangement. He's on the prowl, looking for his next mark. He thinks he finds her in an extremely wealthy widow named Celeste (Raquel Welch), but she seems impossible to get to, especially with her chauffeur (Rob Corddry) doubling as her omnipresent gatekeeper. While Maximo works out a plan, he gets money by conning a couple of bone-headed local businessmen (Rob Riggle and Ron Huebel) and working for the manager (Kristen Bell) at a frozen yogurt shop. Maximo thinks he sees his way into Celeste's life when he learns that Hugo has a crush on his classmate, Arden (Mckenna Grace), who happens to be Celeste's granddaughter. But getting his foot in the wealthy grandmother's expensive doors will require Maximo to teach his nephew how to be a miniature Latin lover and win Arden's affections, while distracting Sara by pushing her into the arms of a neighbor (Ilan Arditti) with whom Sara shares a mutual attraction.

"How to Be a Latin Lover" is predictable, but pleasant, sweet and funny. Although formulaic, its basic premise is fairly original and enjoyable. Derbez is equal parts charismatic and entertaining, while the rest of the talented cast is game for whatever the writers and director send their way. Besides Derbez, this movie also marks a coming-out party of sorts for screenwriters Jon Zack (with only a couple previous feature films to his credit) and Chris Spain (this being his first IMDb writing credit), as well as director Ken Marino. Marino, after acting in over 100 movies and TV shows, doing some writing for each medium and directing for eight different TV series, makes this his feature directorial debut.

These filmmakers bring us comedy that's a mixture of slapstick, juvenile humor and just good, old-fashioned strange situations and strained family relationships. And all that comes with at least some family values and growth on the part of the main characters. It's somewhat simplistic, but almost always fun. And, yes, there are occasional subtitles (during some of the scenes in which Maximo interacts with another Spanish-speaking character), but this movie is funny and heartfelt enough to entertain all but the most jaded Movie Fans – and strong enough to earn Derbez many more English-speaking fans. "B+"

was excited to watch this as the trailer was funny.....low IMDb rating got me doubting whether i should go to the movie hall for this...glad i went. it was very funny, well scripted, well acted and not one of those over the top weird obscene comedies...theater was a mix of elder people, kids, adults and everyone laughed throughout the movie....it had genuine humor and good emotional content too... cast was great, salma hayek is a delight to watch , the kid who played her son was so cute, brother sister relationship was well crafted, ...i left the hall smiling...

Surprisingly good...
paul_haakonsen15 April 2019
I stumbled upon "How to Be a Latin Lover" on Netflix while perusing their comedy section. I hadn't heard about the movie before, nor had I any idea who was in it. But still, the movie caught my attention and I gave it a go.

Turned out that "How to Be a Latin Lover" was actually quite entertaining and funny to watch. Sure, you'll not be laughing throughout the entire course of the movie, but there are some good wholehearted and hardy laughs to be had and the storyline in the movie was really surprisingly good.

And it definitely helped that the movie had such a strong and talented ensemble of actors and actresses. This was my first time to get acquainted with Eugenio Derbez, but I will say that he really carried the movie phenomenally. And he had some great help from the likes of Salma Hayek, Rob Lowe and Kristen Bell. Actually, the entire movie was crammed with familiar faces and famous performers, which was surprisingly nice to see for a movie such as this. I will also say that Salma Hayek really brought a lot of charm to the movie with her talent and on-screen presence.

"How to Be a Latin Lover", while it is not a classic in the comedy genre, definitely proved to be entertaining and fun to watch. I was genuinely entertained by the movie and had some good laughs along the way. Hardly a movie I will watch a second time though, because the movie didn't have all that much to offer once you've seen it the first time.

Definitely worth watching if you enjoy a good, wholeheartedly comedy with a heartfelt story as well.

Funny. Deserves more credit

This is the first time I'm writing a review. Because of the bad reviews, it sparked me to defend it. I recently watched this on Netflix. Honestly, most of the films found on Netflix aren't all that great. I usually do agree with scores found on IMDB, but with this film I believe it deserves a higher score. I enjoyed the comedy and found it to be real fun. I shared it with my boyfriend (who is more into action films). Even he was laughing like crazy and also agrees with me. This film deserves a higher score. I can be critical of what I watch, but to be fair, I would give this film a 7.3.

Multi Cultural Comedy
stevendbeard28 April 2017
Warning: Spoilers
I saw "How To Be A Latin Lover", starring Eugenio Derbez-Instructions Not Included, Beverly Hills Chihuahua; Salma Hayek-The Grown Ups movies, Across the Universe; Rob Lowe-Monster Trucks, the Austin Powers movies; Raphael Alejandro-Kindergarten Cop 2, Once Upon a Time_tv and Raquel Welch-Legally Blonde, Mother,Jugs & Speed.

This movie is a comedy for multi cultural audiences-English & Spanish. In fact, it is the first American movie to be released simultaneously in English & dubbed to Spanish-If you are not fluent in Spanish, you might be careful if you go to see it in theaters because it is being shown in both English and Spanish versions. If you are like me-not fluent-you may be wondering why Eugenio gets top billing. That's because he was recently voted most influential Hispanic in entertainment. He is a big star that most Americans have never even heard of and that is what this movie is trying to rectify. Anyway, Eugenio plays an aging gigolo that has been living off of an elderly rich woman for the past 25 years. When she dumps him for a younger guy-Michael Cera in one of the many cameos scattered throughout the movie-Eugenio has to move in with his sister, Salma and her son, Raphael. Rob plays Eugenio's close friend and fellow gigolo, who happens to be living off of his own elderly fireball, Linda Lavin-another good cameo. Eugenio then sets his sights on his next conquest, Raquel-who still looks pretty good for her age, which happens to be 77! Back to the cameos; Keep an eye out at the kids birthday party and you might see Weird Al singing and also, the guy playing the younger version of Eugenio is actually Eugenio's real life son. Overall, I thought it was funny. It's rated "PG-13" for crude humor and sexual content-including some brief partial nudity-and has a running time of 1 hour & 55 minutes. I enjoyed it enough that I would probably buy it on DVD.

Nice & sometimes funny.

Warning: Spoilers
I like Eugenio Derbez. He's probably not the best comedian out there. He's like the Mexican Roberto Benigni doing slightly dirty PG-13 stuff. That's probably the reason why he's successful. His movies are for the whole family.

Overall, this movie's pretty average. Derbez is doing what he's doing in most of his roles, playing some kind of man-child (a middle aged boy-toy). I actually liked Hayek in this. Probably the funniest she's been since Fools Rush In, not because of what she's saying, more because of how she's portraying the sister and mom, the overall presence. Rob Lowe's great as always.

The film's full of appearances by funny actors the director, Ken Marino, has worked with over the years: Kristen Bell, Rob Riggle, Rob Corddry, Rob Huebel, Michael Cera, Michaela Watkins and surprisingly, Weird Al.

If you're looking for a better Derbez comedy with a little more depth, I actually enjoyed No Se Aceptan Devoluciones (Instructions Not Included) way more. 5.5/10

Innocent family fun. 5.5/10

Fabulouso!
kz917-15 September 2017
A nice bilingual comedy introducing Eugenio Derbez to American audiences starring alongside Selma Hayek and Rahpael Alejandro. Maximo is a gigolo that after twenty five years of marriage finds himself dumped for a younger man. Maximo must move in with his sister and nephew. Along the way he learns important lessons of friendship and family. Bonus points for Rob Lowe as a fellow gigolo and the scene in which he "plays" a cop complete with tear-a-way uniform. Another bit of trivia in the beginning of the film there is a younger Maximo that dives into the pool, that is Eugenio Derbez's twenty five year old son! Enjoyable rental - just be sure to watch with the captions unless you are fluent in Spanish.

It's super funny!
Gordon-1113 October 2017
This film tells the story of a professional sugar son, who has been the toy boy of a rich woman for twenty five years. One day, he is replaced by someone younger, and he has to find another wife just to survive.

Maximo is really confident and charming, so it's easy to see that he is attractive to some ladies. His misadventures during his quest for another lady are really funny. The family subplot is really good as well, as it is touching and genuine. I liked everything in this film. I really enjoyed watching it, and laughed a lot.

How To Be A Lousy Movie
lbenot25 May 2017
Beginning with the ridiculously stupid opening scene, this movie drags on to become nothing more than two torturous hours of lame, simple-minded, disconnected gags ('pull my finger' ha, ha, ha) strung together to form an even lamer simpler-minded plot, if it can be called that.

This kind of low-brow crap is all the likes of Rob Lowe can qualify for, but it was sad to see Salma Hayek and the venerable and iconic Raquel Welch stoop to this low a level. Didn't they read the script before they signed?

The kid was cute, and there actually was ONE funny gag (that did not involve any of the main players nor the 'plot' - which probably explains why it was funny) about mid-way. But neither of these made enduring the nonstop inane-ness of everything else worth it.

The other reviews, which I made the huge mistake of relying on, are nothing more than a shameless shill-fest.

The performance of Eugenio Derbez is good and the plot is entertaining; however, it is very generic and does not add anything new.

Finally a good comedy, there is still hope
Lugo19898 September 2017
Most comedies that have been released this year were pretty much horrendous and treat viewers like they have an IQ of -50. With that being said, How to Be a Latin Lover is a true breath of fresh air, it's been a while since a movie made me feel this good and it definitely deserves a higher rating that 5.8.

The storyline is simple, main characters charming, writing witty, the acting is top-notch especially from Eugenio Derbez, the jokes are not forced which is a rarity nowadays and there are many laugh out loud moments that are nicely spread throughout the movie so it never loses momentum and becomes dull despite being almost 2 hours long.

If you are looking for a quality charming feel-good movie don't miss this one and ignore all the bad reviews, fun is guaranteed.

No More Talking About Not Talking
nogodnomasters30 June 2017
Warning: Spoilers
Maximo (Eugenio Derbez) learned a lesson early in life, that hard work doesn't pay. His sister Sara (Salma Hayek) desires to be an architect. After being married to wealthy elderly lady for 25 years, Maximo gets dumped and is forced to lived with his sister and 10 year old nephew. While still on the prowl, Maximo teaches his nephew how to get a girl but not without consequences.

This is a film that is safe for much of the family that can understand the adult themes. The film was smile funny, but not a side splitting comedy. It includes a cast of stars and a few walk-ons that pop in the background uncredited.

Rob Lowe, Kristen Bell, Michael Cera, Rob Corddry, Rob Riggle, Raquel Welch and a fat Weird Al' Yankovic.

Guide: No F-words, sex, or nudity. Uses the "S" word.

Nothing special
isaacochoterena1 September 2021
Although it seems like a good proposal, it does not achieve anything different.

The first half of the movie is good, the jokes are funny, the things that happen are logical and entertaining, but in the middle of the second act it becomes slow, boring and with not funny jokes, in this part the script turns bad and ends up including all the clichés already known. Another highlight of the film is the music and the writing of the characters.

The film remains in the middle of what it had proposed in the beginning and is due in terms of plot and grace.

Very entertaining Rom-Com, Derbez has great comic timing.
TxMike17 September 2017
Warning: Spoilers
My wife and I watched this on DVD from our public library. It has a rather low IMDb rating and I wasn't expecting much but it surprised me, it is very well made and very entertaining. A few of the sight gags fell flat for me but I'd say 75% of it worked.

The opening scene sets the tone when we see the Mexican dad of little Maximo and Sara die in an accident. I won't spoil the details but I will describe it after "SPOILERS" at the end of my comments. Anyway seeing how his hard-working dad died just like that little 11-yr-old Maximo decides he wants a different life, he intends to find a wealthy older woman to marry so that he can live a life of luxury.

The story cuts to 10 years later in California and an attractive, athletic Maximo in a skimpy swim suit finds his target at a resort. (In an interesting casting choice the actor is the 21-yr-old son of the actor who plays Maximo at age 46.)

So cut to 25 years later and Maximo is a somewhat out-of-shape 46 (actor is 50-something) and with his elderly wife of 25 years he leads a life of luxury, has lots of expensive cars, has servants do everything for him. Until his wife finds a younger man and the prenup means Maximo is out on the street with nothing.

So most of the story starts here, Maximo needs a place to stay while he hunts for his next wealthy wife, he looks up his sister Sara after all those years, meets his nephew Hugo. His life now really does become a comedy of errors and missteps. The movie works for several reasons. The first is director Ken Marino who keeps it all in a somewhat sympathetic manner, the bad people here aren't really that bad. Second the acting and comic timing of Eugenio Derbez who plays the 46-yr-old Maximo. And third the large number of friends of Marino who agreed to take roles in this movie. The main one is Salma Hayek who is really great as his adult sister Sara. And young Raphael Alejandro as Hugo who is mentored by uncle Maximo on how to be suave and get the girls.

A very entertaining comedy for those in the mood for this type of entertainment.

SPOILERS: In the opening scene it is made clear that Maximo's dad always said "You get what you work for, not what you wish for." He drove a truck and was gone often but this day Maximo and Sara, along with their mom, are waiting outside for dad as he drove his truck towards their home. But he was falling asleep, he crashed into the house as the family members scrambled to safety and went all the way through it. After a very short sigh of relief the fuel truck exploded with dad still inside. That set the tone for the rest of the movie, a bit dark, but comedic, on the slightly absurd side.

The Wild and Wacky Life of a Freeloader
lavatch17 August 2017
Warning: Spoilers
In the bonus segment of the DVD of "How to Be a Latin Lover," the producers describe how the project was originally intended as a television sit com called "Trophy Wife." While the movie still has the feel of a television program, it was nonetheless adapted effectively into a lively though uneven film comedy.

The strength of the film was in the sight gags as we follow the travails of the likable loser Maximo, a gigolo on the loose in Los Angeles. Eugenio Derbez is good as the loser, who takes advantage of his sister for a home base for him to pursue his exploits as a gold digger.

The secondary characters in the film are well developed, especially the manager of a yogurt store played by Kristen Bell. Her bonding with Maximo provides one of the best subplots of the film. Salma Hayak is good as the sister, and Raquel Welch is a standout as the dowager pursued by Maximo.

While the dialogue was often erratic and uninspired, the visual appearance of the film was filled with extremely colorful location filming in Los Angeles. In the extra section of the DVD, director Ken Merino indicated that the production team took advantage of a rare tax break for an extended film shoot in L.A. The Echo Park location and a wonderful mansion were two of the most memorable scenic backdrops. The pink dollhouse was a creative and well-executed visual metaphor for the fantasy life pursued by Maximo.

In the bonus commentary, actor Eugenio Derbez described one of his favorite scenes where he plunged into a swimming pool covered in make-up, as he tries to impress his sugar mommy. It turns out that the make-up dissolves in the pool, leading to Maximo's banishment from the premises. There was also the motif of the "sexy walk" in which Maximo attempts to demonstrate some swagger to his young nephew; a number of Echo Park bystanders join in for the fun. In another memorable scene, Maximo and his sister sing and dance the salsa.

At those moments when the writers ran out of ideas, the energy level dissipated with the lackluster dialogue. The bonus segment includes a set of deleted scenes, many of which would have infused life into the film at key junctures. There were some very talented film artists involved in this film. Kudos especially to the costume designer and cinematographer.

Silly Movie - Fun

A light hearted, silly movie. Its a fun movie for when you aren't seeking an acting masterpiece. Better than many comedies that over reach for a laugh. Eugenio Derbez nailed his character.

No serious plot here as expected, just light comedy
super_yorch24 June 2018
It has its fun moments and they make you feel joy and lighthearted. That is all, it gets you to forget of all bitterness going around while entertaining you for a little while. I just think they could have exploited the Raquel Welch character even further, and there were some times it gets a bit boring but all in all it is light comedy and Eugenio and Salma make a good funny duo. I wish we saw more of them in some additional goof flicks like this.

I loved the movie and thought it was very funny, well acted and the story line was funny. I recommended to other family members and my daughter and wife hated it with a passion. For me light comedy with some laugh out loud moments. Take a chance in my opinion.

I really, really, really wanted to love this movie

Warning: Spoilers
How to be a Latin Lover is about a brother and sister who grew up in humble surroundings. A tragedy happens that leaves them homeless. The sister believes in the father's mantra that working hard will get you what you want out of life. The brother takes a different road to reach his goals.....becoming a gigolo. It works for him until his elderly wife begins an affair with a younger man and dumps him unceremoniously on his butt. He's never had a real job or had to do anything on his own. He shows up on the doorstep of his estranged sister and she cautiously invites him in for one night - which turns into many months. Comedy and heartfelt moments ensue. I loved the trailer for this movie and watched it many times - laughing every time I saw it. Unfortunately, those were the best scenes in the movie and seeing it in all its two-hour running time, dampened the experience for me. It seemed to drag and by the 1:30 mark, I just wanted it to be over. I knew how it would end and I just wanted it to stop! It's not a bad film. Some of the scenes could have been edited better and made into a tighter, more interesting film. I liked it, but will not watch it again.

haters gonna hate
Top_Dawg_Critic4 June 2017
So reading all the negative comments AND all the positive comments (usually the most suspicious due to fake promoting a movie), I decided to see this love/hate reviewed movie for myself.

I have to say it was one of the most funny and entertaining comedies I've seen this year, if not THE funniest! Non stop laughs, all star cast (every actor was amazing!), great story, great directing, and a heartwarming ending.

I have nothing bad to critique about this movie. It was perfect!

I'm shocked at all the hate for Rob Lowe and Salma Hayek! They played their parts perfectly! And Eugenio Derbez was on point! The Spanish translated dialogue added even more comedy to the performances.

I'm not sure what all the negative remarkers were expecting, nor what they are comparing it to make it so bad, but this one is a real winner and I suggest you see it and hopefully give this the higher rating it really deserves to out-weigh the miserable low scores.

10/10 because I can't think of what could have made this movie any better than what it was!

Does not succeed in its entirety, but worth spending 2 hours on I guess
Horst_In_Translation16 August 2017
Warning: Spoilers
"How to Be a Latin Lover" is a really new film from this year (2017) and at 115 minutes also a pretty long work. The director has several Emmy nominations, but the two writers are relatively inexperienced, but for that they did a good job. The story does include a bit of family drama, but it is really all about the comedy here from start to finish. Some bad guys, some good guys, some side-plots, some romance etc. basically all you would expect. The lead actor here is Eugenio Derbez and I must admit I have never heard of him before despite his really prolific and successful career. After all he plays the character in a film with Selma Hayek, Rob Lowe, Kristen Bell and Michael Cera and that's quite something. And I would say he did a decent job overall, even if he isn't really part in my favorite scene, the fake cop scene which was really hilarious. Oh yeah, Mckenna Grace is in here too and she deserves a mention too, not just because she plays her part very well, but also because she really shines in Gifted, another new film right now in which she plays a considerably bigger role. But back to this one here. Hayek's character, who was somewhat the only "normal" character really was a bit obsolete at times, also with her romance part, but I guess they needed here for the family conflict thingey, which was among the weaker parts of the film, but still okay I guess. And there is no denying how amazing she looks for her age. No surprise she plays a character a decade younger than she is. Same for Derbez, who also doesn't look his age.

What I really liked about the main character is how he did not get together with Bell's character as you could have guessed at times in some kind of fairy tale story, but that he stays who he is and always has been when we see his new girlfriend at the very end. I also liked how they kept it low in terms of romance and even if people were falling in love on several occasions, it never felt that this is all it was about and that's definitely a good thing as it helped avoiding schmaltz permanently. All the actors did a pretty good jib here, even the ones I don't like that much in general and there's more than one fitting this description. I guess it was my loss that I have not come across Derbez so far, but I will keep my eyes open for him to appear in other stuff I am going to check out in the future. There are some jokes/moments that aren't working out really, but that's the case in every comedy and I am sure it also has a lot to do with my subjective perception. As a whole, I still give the film a thumbs-up because I believe the positive is more frequent than the negative and because I believe there is a good deal of creativity in the script here. Go see it. It also does not have too many lengths, if any at all, which is a good achievement for a running time like this, especially for comedies.

The only joke this movie delivers....'This is considered comedy'
said-buet107 August 2017
From the title alone one can predict what type of content this is and they wont be wrong at all. I didn't have high hopes but I wanted to have a laugh at some of the jokes. Alas this had almost none. I didn't laugh at almost any of the sad attempts of the writers 'comedy' scenes.

The acting were below average. The directing was pretty bad. The story is predictable. So long story short, skip it.
