- Laura Paddington is overcome with joy when her daughter, Zoe, returns to her after being abducted 17 years before--but is Zoe really her long lost child?
- Richard and Laura Paddington's good marriage broke down as she could not come to terms with the abduction of their four-year-old daughter, Zoe. Fourteen years later, she is a regular attorney and finds a new partner: Jacob Nyholm, who also lost a kid, in a support group. Then, possible missing children volunteer work brings Laura into contact with teenager Rebecca, who "exactly" fits Zoe's description, but has a very vague story. Retired FBI agent Garwin, formerly in charge of Zoe's case, is not as easily convinced as blindly eager Laura and uncovers a cynical plot.—KGF Vissers
- It's been fourteen years since then three year old Zoe Paddington went missing near her Seattle home, the thought being that she was abducted. Zoe's disappearance was a large factor in the breakup of her parents' marriage, they being lawyer Laura Paddington and physician Richard Paddington. In the process of the case, they have both befriended Garwin, the chief investigator on the case for the FBI, he who is now retired. While Richard now spends much of his time in overseas aide postings, Laura still focuses much of her energies and thoughts on Zoe, such as going down to the wharf where Zoe was abducted hanging missing persons posters featuring an age enhanced rendering of what Zoe would probably look like, leaving Zoe's bedroom untouched as it was that day, believing she having spotted Zoe every few years, and attending a support group for loved ones of missing persons. It is in that support group where Laura met her current boyfriend, Jacob Nyholm, whose sister is the missing person in his life. As Jacob is able to convince Laura to move on by cleaning up Zoe's room and donating her clothes and toys to a women's shelter, Laura spots someone else who she believes is Zoe, the feeling stronger this time than any of the other times. The young woman is Rebecca, a new volunteer at the shelter. Evidence points to Rebecca truly being Zoe, the most telling physical indication being the conjoined hearts birthmark on the back of Rebecca's neck which matches that of Zoe. The DNA test that Laura, in her haste, conducts on behalf of the authorities allows Garwin's successor, Michelle Canning, to close the case, and return seventeen year old Rebecca/Zoe into Laura's custody. Despite wanting to spend her time with her newfound daughter, Laura cannot neglect her work, she dealing with a drug dealer willing to provide testimony against one of the most high powered and violent gangs in town. Upon Richard's return from his current overseas posting, he has strong doubts that Rebecca is indeed Zoe. This belief places a wedge between him and Laura, and could potentially place their lives at risk if Richard is correct and that Rebecca is part of a scam.—Huggo
