The pun-packed, Arnie-starring original that strayed wildly from Stephen King’s book is one trashy 80s sci-fi romp that could actually benefit from a remake
Why bother remaking much-loved 80s and 90s science fiction movies? Frankly it never ends well. Len Wiseman’s 2012 reworking of Total Recall, with a baffled-looking Colin Farrell taking over from Arnold Schwarzenegger as the amnesiac dreamer of futuristic secret agent dreams, struggled to capture the bombast of the superbly trashy Paul Verhoeven original, and never even made it to mutant-heavy Mars. The maverick Dutch director’s 1987 version of RoboCop is a gloriously effective corporate satire masquerading as an all-guns-blazing actioner, but its 2014 remake from José Padilha (despite a stellar cast) seemed to smooth off all those rough, wonderfully stop-motion fuelled sci-fi edges and somehow lose something in the process.
How, then, should we greet the news that another of Arnie’s nutty sci-fi romps, 1987’s The Running Man,...

Struggling to recall the last time the internet seemed like a force for good in the world? Yancey Strickler can cite the exact date: March 13, 2013.
That’s the day that Kickstarter’s co-founder and former CEO Strickler and writer/director Rob Thomas launched the “Veronica Mars” Movie Project on the then-four-year-old crowdfunding platform. Within 11 hours, tens of thousands of “Veronica Mars” fans opened their wallets to quickly hit the $2 million goal to bring Thomas’ low-rated high school detective series starring Kristen Bell as the eponymous teen gumshoe back from the TV graveyard as a feature film, which opened in theaters 10 years ago on March 14, 2014.
“It was just love — that’s what it felt like,” Strickler told IndieWire about being in the room with Thomas when the “Veronica Mars” campaign launched, and the fan-raised funds rolled in en masse. “There was a documentary crew there filming; the cast kept calling us,...

There are probably countless ways to tell a story. The most common one is going from point A to point B, where A is the beginning and B is the ending. Then there are times when you’re dropped in the middle of a story that keeps going back and forth. And then, there are stories like Going to Mars: The Nikki Giovanni Project, which don’t follow any particular structure. That makes perfect sense, as for someone like Giovanni, it’s rather impossible to make a straightforward biopic that starts with childhood and ends at the twilight age. It would also be quite pointless, as it clearly wouldn’t justify her socio-political impact on American culture. The director duo of Joe Brewster and Michèle Stephenson certainly gets all that, which is pretty evident from their HBO documentary titled Going to Mars: The Nikki Giovanni Project. It wouldn’t be...

With the feat, the actor-singer became the first person to legally scale the Manhattan landmark, although his climb began on the 86th floor and concluded on the 104th floor, a mere 1,300 feet off the ground.
“I was more excited than nervous to tell you the truth,” Leto told Today after the stunt. “But I have to be honest, it was very, very hard.

Some stars had an influence on classic rock so pervasive they managed to inspire the old guard. Case in point, David Bowie’s “Let’s Dance” was an inspiration for one of Paul McCartney’s solo albums. Paul made the album with one of Bowie’s 1970s punk peers. On the same token, Bowie discussed how The Beatles influenced his lyrics for “Space Oddity.”
Paul McCartney was thinking of David Bowie’s ‘Let’s Dance’ while working with Elvis Costello
Paul worked with punk singer and producer Elvis Costello on the record Flowers in the Dirt. During a 2017 interview with The Washington Post, Paul discussed his mindset while crafting “Press to Play” from Flowers in the Dirt. “Sometimes you get caught up in trying to be the current flavor, trying to go along and flavor your cooking with the food of the month, and I think ‘Press to Play’ was certainly that,...

Red Hot Chili Peppers drummer Chad Smith was challenged to play drums to a song he never heard before as he listened to it for the first time, and he absolutely crushed it. The song was the Thirty Seconds to Mars hit “The Kill,” which he guessed was “My Chemical Romance or something” right after playing along to it.
The challenge was presented by Drumeo as part of its “For the First Time” series. After some banter between Smith and the series’ hosts, Smith listened to the song’s quiet opening verse before pounding away to the heavy chorus. From there, he played absolutely killer drums for the rest of the song, almost instinctively knowing what was coming next.
When it was all said and done, Smith exclaimed, “What the fuck was that? Is that like My Chemical Romance or something?” When the host asked him if he knew the song,...

NASA’s oxygen-generating experiment that accompanied the Perseverance rover has successfully completed its mission on Mars, and may enable future astronauts landing on the Red Planet to produce oxygen for fuel and breathing, the agency has announced.
Developed by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), a microwave-oven-size device called Moxie (Mars Oxygen In-Situ Resource Utilisation Experiment), has generated oxygen for the 16th and final time aboard Perseverance rover.
“Moxie’s impressive performance shows that it is feasible to extract oxygen from Mars’ atmosphere — oxygen that could help supply breathable air or rocket propellant to future astronauts,” said NASA Deputy Administrator Pam Melroy, in a statement.
“Developing technologies that let us use resources on the Moon and Mars is critical to build a long-term lunar presence, create a robust lunar economy, and allow us to support an initial human exploration campaign to Mars,” Melroy added.

Andrew Legge’s directorial debut Lola treads the line between the pitfalls of invention and the blessings that initially surround the same. One minute, it’s a seemingly ahead-of-its-time musical trying to capture the imperceivable hues of two sisters in the helplessly limited 16mm black and white frames. And in the blink of an eye, the symphony of love transforms into a heated brawl against the war-torn backdrop of a fictional Britain. To plate up something refreshingly original—a film that would’ve been deemed a masterpiece had it been made around the same time as the narrative is set—is an laudable achievement for a debut director who’s evidently in awe of the bleak nuances of time travel.
Spoilers Ahead
Plot Synopsis: What Happens In ‘Lola’ Film?
The leap of faith that Legge’s narrative opens with is quite extreme. You could turn your screen off right after...

Paul McCartney was helpless as he watched The Beatles fall apart despite his best efforts to stop the breakup. The unofficial songwriting competition between Paul and John Lennon stressed the band to the breaking point. Yet Macca couldn’t keep himself from forming a new band, and it might have saved his life. McCartney’s Wings bandmate Henry McCullough pulled a knife and drove away a person who said he wanted to kill Paul.
Paul McCartney’s Wings bandmate Henry McCullough confronted Paul’s potential murderer with a knife
Once Linda McCartney helped rouse her husband from his post-Beatles stupor, Paul released two solo albums in a little over a year. He dropped McCartney in April 1970 and Ram in May 1971.
He had complete creative freedom as a solo artist, but McCartney felt the pull of assembling a new band. Guitarist Denny Laine and drummer Denny Seiwell were the first to...

Exclusive: Ryan Reynolds and his company, Maximum Effort, have joined Nacelle’s Biker Mice from Mars animated series, a new iteration of the cult classic series. Nacelle plans to co-produce with Maximum Effort and Fubo.
“Some people know that I am a motorcycle enthusiast, so it was only natural for us to jump on board Biker Mice from Mars,” said Reynolds. “Maximum Effort and Fubo look forward to putting a new spin on this cult classic with our friends at Nacelle.”
The Biker Mice From Mars story: on the planet Mars, there existed a race of anthropomorphic mice who enjoyed motorsports and had a very similar culture and society to that of human beings. Eventually, they were all but wiped out by the Plutarkians, an alien race of obese, foul-smelling, worm-eating, fish-like humanoids who plunder other planets for their natural resources.

The 1990s were an exciting period for action films, with many of them getting released direct-to-video and showing up seemingly randomly at local video stores, requiring fans of the genre to have memberships at multiple locations to get to see everything. There was so much that if attention wasn’t paid, titles would be missed easily or rented twice under different titles at different video stores. Stars emerged within those ranks and gathered the love and adoration of fans. Here are the 10 of the best Dtv action stars of that era:
Dolph Lundgren
Let’s start with the obvious man on the list, the one that everyone saw films from at their local video stores. Lundgren had films that were released in theaters, on video, and direct to cable in some cases during the 1990s, but one thing is for sure, he was a mainstay of the action film aisle...

In 1989, Billy Joel released his eleventh album Storm Front which featured his third single that would reach number one on the Billboard Top 100 charts, We Didn’t Start the Fire. We Didn’t Start the Fire was a unique tune in which the lyrics were composed entirely of a laundry list of subjects that dominated news headlines spanning from 1949 to 1989 (which was also Billy Joel’s lifetime at that point). The pop culture hit would address topics such as Beatlemania, the Berlin wall, the Ayatollah, Ho Chi Minh, Catcher in the Rye, The King and I, the crack epidemic and much more.
The song would spawn parodies for use in movies and TV, but there hasn’t been a genuine updated cover until now. The band Fall Out Boy has just released their version with headlines from the last thirty years filling out the lyrics. This single will reportedly be...

During their stay, they will be faced with authentic conditions that simulate life on Mars, and they must use their brains and brawn – or maybe just their stellar social skills – to outlast the competition and claim the title of brightest star in the galaxy. The celebrities will compete in missions and will vote to eliminate one of their crewmates each week, sending them back to Earth.
The series will premiere on Monday June 5.

A little over a year after Ben Affleck mused he would never make a theatrically released movie again, and insisting he wanted to focus on non-franchise films for adult audiences, the filmmaker nonetheless enjoyed one of the happiest box office stories of 2023. To be sure, this past holiday weekend was dominated by yet another “IP movie,” as Affleck is wont to say, The Super Mario Bros. Movie. However, in the shadow of that film’s gargantuan $205.5 million across five days, Affleck’s own adult-skewing drama, Air, also dominated the court in its own league, grossing $20.2 million over five days.
Not bad for a movie that’s produced by one of the biggest streamers around, Amazon Studios, and which true to Affleck’s word wasn’t even originally intended to reach the big screen. In fact, Air didn’t pivot to a theatrical release until post-production when Amazon realized how well...

In 1962, artists Wally Wood and Norman Saunders painted out a series of horrifically violent trading cards featuring large-brained alien critters attacking Earth, gleefully killing the U.S. soldiers, severing people's heads, and using their advanced technology to grow Earth's insects into murderous monsters. Called "Mars Attacks!," the trading cards were numbered and, when arranged properly, told a linear story of the whole Martian invasion, and how Mars, nearing an explosive cataclysm, needed to invade Earth for purposes of recolonization. The Martian invasion was followed a successful Earth counterstrike back on Mars, wherein a human force blew up the Martian cities and killed the disgusting little monsters once and for all. Then Mars explodes.
The "Mars Attacks!" cards were most certainly inappropriate for children, so of course kids wanted them right away. Because of the violent images on the cards, many concerned parents groups successfully sued to have them removed from comic book stores.
