One of the most exciting categories this year at the Grammys is Best Melodic Rap Performance, where there’s one glaring omission: Nicki Minaj and Ice Spice’s “Barbie World.” The big hit from “Barbie” was relegated to Best Rap Song, showing a lack of enthusiasm from voters (who likely voted for it in the songwriting category due to its high alphabetical placement on the ballot). But the song’s miss ended up making the category way more interesting with a couple of hits now duking it out for the win. With big names in the category such as Drake and Sza, let’s consider who will ultimately be crowned the winner come February 4.
Let’s start with the song that has the least chance of a win: Burna Boy and 21 Savage’s “Sittin’ on Top of the World.” While the track was a big hit for Burna, it...

Taylor Swift is the odds-on favorite to make history with an Album of the Year victory for “Midnights.” It would be her fourth win in the category following victories for “Fearless,” “1989” and “Folklore.” That would set a new record for the most Album of the Year wins for any recording artist ever, breaking Swift’s tie with Frank Sinatra, Stevie Wonder and Paul Simon. But she’s only tipped to win two other categories out of her six total nominations: Best Pop Vocal Album for “Midnights...

Review: Fantasy fiction is a slippery slope. After the meteoric rise of characters like Lyra Belacqua, Harry Potter, and Percy Jackson, the literary market became flooded with young heroes, each with a magical lineage to discover or a world-ending mystery to solve. It takes a lot to stand out among the crowd and leave your mark on young minds worldwide. You don’t say no to Mama, especially when she’s Michelle Yeoh.
In her first leading role since winning the Best Actress Oscar for her turn in Everything Everywhere All at Once, Yeoh (Crazy Rich Asians) stars as badass Mama Sun in the upcoming slick Asian American crime drama The Brothers Sun. Created by Brad Falchuk and Byron Wu, the series explores “what it means to be a son, what it means to be a brother, and also what it means to try and keep a family together,” said Falchuk. “We do an extreme version of it because they’re a crime family and there are people shooting at them and trying to kill them. But the conflicts they’re having — the problems they’re having internally, the emotional problems — are very, very universal.”

School bullying has always been a topic of interest for the K-drama industry. I suppose Dramaland was far ahead of its time when it was decided that most villainous characters would be the rich “chaebols,” who then get put in their place while the good, rich “chaebol” takes the girl and the cake all to himself. Sky Castle and Penthouse were Makjang dramas that were global hits, both including the subject of special schools for the rich and how these kids grow up. Bitch And Rich is a mini-series that tries to provide the same sort of adrenaline rush but fails to impress with its surface-level attitude towards the subject. As is common with K-dramas, the show tries to include a comical tone despite dealing with a serious subject, which comes across as being in poor taste. Additionally, it’s a show about school for school kids, and even with 30-minute episodes,...

Adele Lim, the screenwriter behind “Crazy Rich Asians” and Disney’s “Raya and the Last Dragon” animation, says that the opportunities for Asian filmmakers are growing as Hollywood is becoming more receptive to international talent.
“[In Hollywood] I felt that I was disadvantaged, coming from Malaysia. It is not the cultural nexus,” said Lim, whose infancy was in Malaysia, before her family moved to the U.S. “Later I realized the multicultural advantages of Asia.”
Lim, who also recently directed her first movie “Joy Ride,” was speaking at an on-stage event Wednesday in Taipei as part of the Taiwan Creative Culture Fest (Tccf), an annual convention and market for film and TV content and for story tech products.
“[When I arrived in Hollywood] “Flower Drum Song” and “Joy Luck Club” had preceded me. But there were few Asian writers. Hollywood was very masculine. Very white [..] There was this idea in America that Asians cannot be the hero of the story.

There’s something uniquely special about the films you discover when you’re a child. Whether it’s a wondrous flight of fantasy, a mind-boggling work of animation, an adventure in a whole new world, or a coming-of-age tale that teaches you some of life’s biggest lessons, the movies we see when we’re kids stay with us for life — and the best ones help shape who we are. But in an age where you don’t have to leave the house — or even the sofa — to lose yourself in the magic of moving pictures, it can be hard to even know where to start when it comes to finding the films that will truly connect with the next generation of budding young film buffs.
Thankfully, your cool aunt/uncle Empire is here to help. We’ve got down with the kids, reconnected with the child within, and spent...

This LGBTQ+ History Month, we're asking writers to reflect on a moment in queer pop culture history that has allowed them to experience queer liberation in their own lives. Check out our coverage here.
Long before the commercial success of "Crazy Rich Asians," "Shang-Chi," "Fire Island," and "Everything Everywhere All at Once" heralded a new age of Asian representation in Hollywood, Alice Wu's "Saving Face" paved the way for queer Asian visibility in 2004.
Last year, when I watched the film for the first time, I had a vague inkling that I aspired to become a screenwriter and filmmaker. I had taken a few screenwriting classes through a nonprofit arts organization, but I felt deep insecurity that the subjects I was writing about - my American-born Chinese experience of being queer in an ethno-burb in Los Angeles - were too specific and too esoteric to be relevant to any audience.

The summer of 2023 marks the 10-year anniversary of Kevin Kwan’s internationally best-selling debut novel Crazy Rich Asians and the five-year anniversary of its record-grossing big-screen adaptation, but the author barely had time to think about the dual milestones. For the past two years he has been engrossed in the writing of his fifth novel, an endeavor that he describes as “all-consuming.” But now that the literary cat is out of the bag — Kwan broke the news that Lies and Weddings, the continuation of his latest trilogy, will hit bookshelves on May 21, 2024 — he’s finding the time and the mental clarity to soak in what 10 years of Crazy Rich Asians has meant. Here, Kwan called THR (the morning after Tropical Storm Hilary hit L.A.) to look back — and forward.
Let’s talk about Lies and Weddings first. What can you tell us about how the idea for this novel came about?...

Commercial cinema especially in Southeast Asia has always followed the money. A successful movie at the box office would inspire countless imitations until the well would run dry and takings decline leading to the next cycle. “A Better Tomorrow” upon release in 1986 really hit the popular culture zeitgeist, creating an iconic figure in Chow Yun Fat, a whole new subgenre in Heroic Bloodshed and inspired a wave of copycats and inspirations. One of the more mature inspirations was a double bill by Taylor Wong in “Rich and Famous” and “Tragic Hero” released the following year. Headlined by then ubiquitous Chow Yun Fat, it would strive for epic status telling its story over two features.

Deadline has reported that Disney has found their Cobra Bubbles for the upcoming live-action Lilo & Stitch in Emmy-winner Courtney B. Vance.
The original Lilo & Stitch film told the story of a young Hawaiian girl named Lilo and an extraterrestrial dog-like creature known as Experiment 626. He’s soon given the name Stitch after being adopted by Lilo. Although Stitch is a force of chaos and destruction, he eventually develops a close bond with Lilo. Together, the pair avoid the pursuing aliens who have been dispatched to capture him. The film spawned several direct-to-video sequels as well as a couple of TV shows. Cobra Bubbles was a former CIA agent turned social worker in the animated movie. The role was originally voiced by Ving Rhames.

The sharp increase in Asian representation in movies and TV shows has been the stuff of celebration in recent years, and for good reason. But while "Crazy Rich Asians" may be a caricature of extreme wealth, and "Everything Everywhere All at Once" is utterly weird (in all the right ways), Netflix's "Beef," starring Ali Wong and Steven Yeun, is grounded in a relatable reality. Even if things spiral way out of control as the series progresses.
There is more than one way to "be a man" in modern Asian American culture.
Growing up in the 1980s and '90s, it was rare if I saw another Asian male face on screen. And if I did, he was most often a single-faceted secondary character. He'd be the token Asian among a group of predominantly white friends, like Ke Huy Quan's Data in "The Goonies." He probably had an accent and was usually nerdy.

Maren Morris is one of the biggest country music stars in the industry today, a singer who has achieved major crossover appeal as a pop artist. Her songs “Rich,” “80’s Mercedes,” and “My Church” have earned praise from music critics and fans alike.
While Morris has often made headlines due to her outspoken political convictions, Morris maintains a very peaceful home life. In fact, she’s been married to fellow country singer Ryan Hurd for years, an artist who literally (if not figuratively) towers head and shoulders taller than his diminutive wife.

“Fresh Off the Boat” star Randall Park turned heads at Sundance this year with his directorial debut, “Shortcomings.” The feature film follows a trio of Asian Americans from Berkeley, California: Ben (Justin H. Min), an ornery cinephile who runs a local arthouse theater; his partner, Miko (Ally Maki), who earnestly believes in the future of Asian American cinema; and Alice (Sherry Cola), Ben’s comedic confidante and serial lesbian monogamist. As the three struggle to maintain their polished veneers to the public, they witness each other’s personas shatter amid the rough-and-tumble of millennial romance. As the peace in their Bay Area bubble crumbles, the three of them uproot to New York City, where they grapple with their imperfections head-on.

There is no such thing as a simple dinner party among friends when you’re dealing with the uber rich.
From “Glass Onion” to “Bodies Bodies Bodies” to the respective second seasons of “The White Lotus” and “Only Murders in the Building,” the portrayals of murder mystery parlor games over dinner have been the pressure cooker crux of whodunits as of late. Yet leave it to meta Netflix series “You” to skewer expectations, just as lead character Jonathan Moore aka Joe Goldberg (Penn Badgley) is hyper-aware of his own stake in the slow roasted game afoot.
Episodes 4 and 5, or rather the respective Part 1 finale for “You” Season 4, take place in a remote castle where Lady Phoebe (Tilly Keeper) and her squad of morally numb university pals seek solace from the Eat the Rich Killer, who Jonathan is determined to prove is already among them. Of course, a drug-fueled and bird-hunting...

Don DeLillo’s debut novel, “Americana,” is set to be adapted 51 years after it was first published.
“White Noise” producer Uri Singer has bought the rights to the 1971 novel, continuing his streak of adapting a string of DeLillo works that have been deemed “unadaptable.”
“Americana” tells the story of David Bell, an out-of-touch television executive who sets off on a road trip with his female colleague, Sullivan, to make an avant-garde film. The book explores the intricacies of corporate culture and examines how we create realities, whether they are true or not.
Singer tells Variety: “When you read ‘Americana,’ you understand how Don developed into the literary icon he is today. It’s the story of an ‘American Psycho’-type of protagonist, minus the murder, in the toxic and cut-throat world of television, with all the extraordinary minor characters that mark a DeLillo work. Where ‘American Psycho’ just shows the protagonist as he is,...

Based on the New York Times best-selling book series, a crackerjack criminal crew of animal outlaws are about to attempt their most challenging con yet—becoming model citizens.
Never have there been five friends as infamous as The Bad Guys—dashing pickpocket Mr. Wolf, seen-it-all safecracker Mr. Snake, chill master-of-disguise Mr. Shark, short-fused “muscle” Mr. Piranha and sharptongued expert hacker Ms. Tarantula, aka “Webs.”
But when, after years of countless heists and being the world’s most-wanted villains, the gang is finally caught, Mr. Wolf brokers a deal (that he has no intention of keeping) to save them all from prison: The Bad Guys will go good.

With "Raya and the Last Dragon," Disney continued its push towards more diverse stories across the company's many franchises and studios. The film follows the titular heroine on a quest to reunite her land against a ravaging plague with the help of the world's last living dragon. It stood out as a striking celebration of the South Asian cultures that are usually excluded from mainstream media, and utilized much diversity behind the scenes with screenwriters Adele Lim ("Crazy Rich Asians") and Qui Nguyen, as well as an all-Asian cast.

In Sunday’s singularly heartbreaking Animal Kingdom, Pope — poor, troubled Pope — decided that Smurf had to be laid to rest not tomorrow, not yesterday, now. Now, now, now.
Stymied at every turn, by everything from disinterested brothers to funeral home closing times, he wound up stealing into the cemetery after dark and tearfully trying to rip open the bag containing his mother’s ashes to spread them near Julia’s grave. Failing at that, he awakened the next morning poolside… to find Smurf’s remains floating in the water as if he’d been trying to make a big, gray mudpie.

Director Jon M. Chu broke down the logistics — from needing heaps and heaps of towels for the cast to ensuring no one drowned — with TheWrap’s film editor Beatrice Verhoeven ahead of the musical’s release.
“For the song ‘96,000,’ you have 600 extras who you need to make sure don’t drown or get electrocuted around lights,” Chu explained. “Their ages are from five to 80. You have to have enough towels to keep people dry so they don’t get hypothermia and they need to not only get dry once, they had to get dry over and over again. And you have barbecues, so there’s fires happening. You have your whole cast there — it’s stormy, by the way. So there’s lightning, so yes,...

“Crazy Rich Asians” director Jon M. Chu sees his error in casting brown actors in subservient roles.
While promoting his new film “In the Heights,” Chu told Insider that he should have made the South Asian characters in “Crazy Rich Asians” “more human” and that he “totally gets” the criticism.
The 2018 rom-com hit centers on the relationship between Chinese American professor Rachel Chu (Constance Wu) and history professor Nick Young (Henry Golding). He takes her home to Singapore for the wedding of his best childhood friend (and the event of the year), where Rachel comes to learn about Nick’s obscenely wealthy family.
As the Young family matriarch, Nick’s grandmother holds numerous, lavish events at her estate that is guarded by top-tier security. And though Indians are the third-largest ethnic group in Singapore, they are only seen as working armed guards. Chu said South Asian actors were at the party as guests,...

If you went into the teaser trailer for Marvel’s Eternals with relatively little foreknowledge, then you may have been surprised by the Jon Snow of it all—and, by that, I mean the fact that Kit Harington appears in this movie, alongside his Game of Thrones co-star Richard Madden (who plays Ikaris).
Harrington will play the Black Knight, aka Dane Whitman. As we explained back in 2019, in the comics, Marvel’s Black Knight character is a wielder of the mystical Ebony Blade, a sword made from a meteor and blessed by Merlin that protects its user from harm (and can drive its wielder to bloodthirsty madness—gotta read that fine print). The Dane Whitman iteration of the character is the third Marvel character to use the Black Knight moniker, and first appeared in 1967’s The Avengers #47.
