A Journey into a project
lloyd-0461022 September 2016
The film allows us to join in a journey into Stefan's world. A documentary that allows a personal look into the life of an artist and adventurer worth watching.

Stefan has become an exemplary proponent of tabletop gaming and the hobby resurgence.

Fellow nerds, game players, and folks interested in peeking into the world of RPG game players and artists will find this trip interesting.

Stefan has a rags to riches story and is sincere and genuine with his intention of sharing it and his love of art and games. He works extremely hard at his craft and his work comes through in this documentary cross section of his journey to fund a Kickstarter. Crowd funding is at the core of Dwarven Forge, so it makes sense that it should be part of this doc.

Interesting view into D&D and how it shapes lives
eddiebeanle22 September 2016
This is not the best documentary I've ever seen, but it's intriguing. The subject, Stefan, is clearly an artist and dreamer, not a businessman.

Through, what seems, sure will power he starts a company around his passion. After having run 2 successful Kickstarters we see him start a 3rd and watch as his dreams attempt to keep up with reality.

You get the feeling that his feet never quite touch the ground. He clearly feels he's doing the right thing by fulfilling the dreams of other gamers, like himself. That's his drive. His only drive. He doesn't seem to give a damn about the reality of the money, or even how hard he works his teams who do. He is the dreamer at the head of a semi-successful company and let's the hard work fall to his team.

I'm OK with that. Some of our greatest companies were built off of dreamers. Bring in the Harvard business guys to work the long hours to make it work. Without a dreamer's guidance, they tend to not have jobs. Sometimes that's how business works. Frustrating for some, but necessary as well.

Stefan is compelling in his complete and utter devotion to seeing his dreams come true. If you ever wanted to chase your own dreams than see how he does it and adjust accordingly.

And the adventure continues...
militaryjock3522 September 2016
With my roots in gaming starting back in 1974, my use of terrain and metal miniatures was highly desired by main gaming group as a means to stretch the limits of our imaginations not for myself, but the rest of the gang who partook in those particular games. I was very fortunate to have a very solid core group of friends who religiously devoted themselves to playing nearly every weekend for countless hours slaying monsters, saving the princess, and raking in the loot that stood as high as the mountains themselves. Watching this particular documentary made me feel like I was 7 years old again. Talk about a blast to the past.

How can anyone not enjoy this documentary of an immigrant's story who created his own adventure by traveling across the dark blue oceans to the greatest country in the world, reside in the greatest city on the planet, and find the success that any immigrant desires the most?

In today's economy, there are many who cannot afford the wonderful products that spring from Mr. Pokorny's vivid imagination but for those who have witnessed and actually used those products from the famous Dwarven Forge line, they have first hand account of that ability to bringing the world of imagination to life at that table where anything is truly possible.

When you sit down and watch this documentary, you are entering his world, the world where people like me wish to partake in on a daily basis. This is the world that gamers such as myself love to immerse ourselves in that blanket of fantasy. No longer is the plain piece of paper where we draw our maps into those foreboding dungeons enough, we have now a means to creating it from a much more spectacular medium.

Well done, Mr. Pokorny, thank you for the insight into your life and your creative genius. There is no doubt in my mind that you opened many a door to many a gamer with your products and provide inspiration to those who were not as quick to develop your beautiful work. You are perhaps the "Willy Wonka" when it comes to dungeon terrain creation.

Game on...

Amazing Documentary & Fantastic Soundtrack
JustinAndrewMason22 September 2016
I started to watch this documentary because it is related to the tabletop role-playing game community, and I ended up watching a fantastic movie about ambition, motivation, effort and creative success. It's incredibly well edited, and has fantastic soundtrack. I found the movie consistently entertaining and engaging. I am a long time gamer and really enjoyed this film and its observations on the RPG gaming community at large. I also think it is an enjoyable foray into the tabletop gaming culture for anyone (even those who are not gamers). I Highly recommend this movie to anyone who is interested in the genre, or interested in watching an inspiring success story!

Entering the modular town and the artist's mind
guisreis16 March 2021
Documentary about an amazing artist who tries to get crowdfunded with his ambitious project: selling an entire Dungeons&Dragons moduled town for roleplaying games. The outcome of his and his artisan employees' work is simply awesome. How charming and detailed is each of the odules/blocs/pieces they built and painted! While showing his business trail to make his dream work by achieving backers, the documetary is sensitive to explore the artist's life story and personality. He has been raised in a rich European family in Brooklyn, United States, but his early childhood was not easy and some thraumas became barriers for decades. His kind behaviour makes it hard to believe, but he had been a "problem boy" until becoming an artist. He has always been skeptical about his talents and about the love of his adoptive parents for him. That misperception endured until the very end and till his latest discoveries, when his RPG town was close to know its fate.

The Dwarvenaut, a very stupid documentary.
darealdeezster17 September 2016
The movie starts out decent enough. You get the feeling it is actually going somewhere and it's a very brief but nice glimpse into the world of Dungeons and Dragons. I thought that's what this film would focus on, instead it focuses on a pathological liar, lifetime alcoholic (since age 13-14 I believe and drug addict). It completely switches gears after the first 15-20 minutes and focuses solely on a delusion man, his drinking, hangovers, and other self-sabotages...

He lies about his backstory and just about everything else coming from his mouth is also a lie. I felt frustrated and at the same time a bit sad that he is living in this fantasy world, where he truly believes he is some genius, creating (with the help of a professional team who know what they are actually doing) these landscapes and character models (which do look great) but no one wants to buy them... He invested way too much money into something, with blind confidence, thinking he would make it rich...

well no one was buying his over-confidence and thick-headed approach OR any of the actually nice looking products... if he wasn't such a d-bag, they could have made it work, but I don't even know if he wanted it to work, I almost feel like this whole thing was one GIANT publicity stunt because he is sort of a loner, sad individual in his 40s with no friends, no partner, just his fantasies which he cannot separate from reality... just like no one was buying his bullshit lies.

I couldn't tell if the "friends" or acquaintances he had speak on his behalf about his genius and creativity were not just paid actors, it seemed so fake and scripted. I honestly believe this man has a personality and or mood disorder and needs some help, but first he needs to check into detox for his alcoholism, which I believe just fuels his delusions of grandeur.

I'm upset that this movie was all about him, him, him. I never interviewed his staff in depth or showed them working for extended periods, it just showed him, strutting around, like "this is my company, I'm a big shot, I can order people around, I have the power I have been craving."

It's just painful to watch. I highly recommend skipping this one, unless you are interested in the psychology of a pathological liar, delusional alcoholic, and a very sad, sad man. I honestly feel bad for the man and hope he gets help, at the same time I feel even worse for anyone who had to sit through this film.

Rating: 0 out of 10. There just is no direction, no point, no conclusion, NO DAMN STORY!!! how does the movie have such good reviews? I joked with my friend that he must have paid off the review sites, because we could not understand how anyone could enjoy this...

Watch only if this is the only movie left on earth, otherwise burn, destroy and scatter the remains. This is one movie that I cannot NOT recommend enough! Good day!

A view behind the curtain.
brianblather22 September 2016
First I want to say that this is not the first time we get to see Stefan Pokorny in a film that involves Dungeons & Dragons; if interested check out "The Dungeons and Dragons Experience." With that said there is a main theme that runs throughout this documentary; Stefan is on a mission to build his company the one way he knows how using Kickstarter. Stefan is a trained artist and a gamer which you see the beginnings of in the D&D Experience film. Here, in this film though; we see him years later still doing the things he loves and trying, like many of us, to make a living doing it.

Stefan Pokorny "The Kickstarter Wizard" The documentary follows him as he goes through the various stages of managing a Kickstarter project; Dwarven Forge's Modular City Builder Terrain System. This is the third project he has successfully executed using crowdfunding to bring new products to life for his company, Dwarven Forge. Here, his skills as an artist turn into three-dimensional game pieces that both kids and adults use to play the game of Dungeons and Dragons. You will see the inner workings of his workshop and the team that helps him bring his vision to life.

Stefan Pokorny "The Artist" You will get a glimpse into his process, works that he has developed for his constructed game world and more. He will touch upon his education and inspirations as an artist and why he feels so strongly about his connection with art, games, people and the greater world.

Stefan Pokorny "He's One of Us" The documentary also shows him in his everyday life going about his business. He's a gamer, an adopted son, a New York artist and a business person. Take the good with bad because in many ways he is like a lot of gamers. We are a bit awkward, goofy, overly excited and passionate about what we love. Most importantly though; it shows what can happen when you never give up on your dreams.

I recommend this film as a gamer, to gamers all the time; to hobby crafters who want to create their own worlds, to artists who think about "Making It". The film is a bit niche and that is expected; we are after all talking about an artist who turned his passion for D&D into a product he loves and built a business with. Watch this film if you are curious about Stefan, thinking about bringing your constructed world to life or just interested in this gaming subculture.

Dwarvenaut....the journey to the unknown...a most excellent adventure
hyacek22 September 2016
This film talks about many things, Role Playing, Business, Society, Community, Drinking, Eating, and maybe even a Pirate reference or two. At its core, this movie excels at delivering a slice of life story that gives you a window into the many rooms and corridors of the main characters life. It may not have been intentional by the writers and directors, but the paths followed by Stefan mirror his livelihood....do I take the left passage or the right? This movie does a great job of taking you on that journey and gives you a window onto what the "road less traveled" might look like. It is inspiring and enlightening. A must watch for any role play fan or budding entrepreneur!

Excellent documentary
delchrys-3633922 September 2016
I didn't know what to expect when I fired up the Dwarvenaut on Netflix. A lifelong gamer, I worried the film would misrepresent the game and its fans or that it would be a bizarre "Hollywood" take on the hobby.

My fears were unfounded. The director takes us into the life of one hobbyist, a man who has made dungeons and dragons into his career. Presenting both a dramatic roller coaster ride in a brief span of weeks during a Kickstarter project and an honest look at the man's day to day life, his background, his work, and his heart, The Dwarvenaut hit a grand slam with me.

After having watching this film, I feel as though I know the man who is the Dwarvenaut. His dreams, his fears, his passions, and his grief. Truly, he has the soul of an artist.

This is exactly the kind of documentary I love. I highly recommend it to artists, gamers, and anyone who has ever felt even the slightest bit curious about Dungeons & Dragons. Warning: this movie will not teach you how to play the game; it'll give you plenty of reasons to relate to and love those who play, though, especially the man who is The Dwarvenaut.

Journey Of A Passionate Artist
saintsinnerk22 September 2016
First I'd like to state that this feature is not only about dungeons & dragons, but also about a passionate artist & his journey in his life following his dream.

Being a tabletop gamer myself, I had heard about & seen dwarven forges products many times. This movie talks about the journey of Stefan Pokorny, his 18 years creating & sharing his amazing creations with people who play dungeons & dragons.

The movie covers both the past , with his origins in Brooklyn, his relationship with his parents & origins that got him where he is today, & the present, as he launches a kickstarter to create his dream project.

The story shows a man who is very human, but that has taken what he loves & turned it into something many only dream of. This movie will give you insights to what it takes to make these amazing creations.

Personally for myself, as someone who feels like he is at the start of what Stefan has done in his 18 years, with my own artistic endeavors, it got me very teary eyed, because it has so many parallels to many starving artists who put pursuing what they love in life first.

If you love D&D & you love models, you will love this documentary.

Great documentary
larealiteverte22 September 2016
This movie is EXACTLY how it was advertised, about an artist with a love and passion for Dungeons&Dragons. It was a wonderful movie I enjoyed it very much and will watch it again. I've spoke with Stefan on many accounts and he is a nice caring person you can tell how passionate he is about everything he does. The movie was never advertised as being a documentary SOLELY about D&D it was billed as a documentary about a man living his dream who has a real love for for the game doing what he can to spread the word about how wonderful it is and can bring people together as well as teach them team work, problem solving and forward thinking and on that front it delivers in DROVES. A great movie not to be missed the person who wrote the negative review is either a troll or someone with an axe to grind with nothing in his review being a bit true. If you like D&D or any other kind of table top game its a great watch hope this helps!

From Struggle Comes Great Success
ted-1263422 September 2016
Dungeons and Dragons is the game - making realistic landscape is the obsession.

The story of Dwarven Forge is the story of Stefan Pokorny, an adopted child who carried the worrisome weight of "being returned." To see his life, to watch him grow from a troubled kid with a chip on his shoulder into one of the finest Dungeons and Dragons miniature sculptures in existence is empowering and encouraging. From backyard D&D games to some of the largest and most prestigious tabletop gaming cons in the world, you'll travel with Stefan and see this unique world come to life through his eyes.

Kids, if you have a dream, Stefan Pokorny is living proof that if you stick to your guns (however nerdy they may be) you can achieve anything you set your mind to.

Long live Valoria!

Art, Imagination and Pathos with The Dwarvenaut
lenogrady-727-81701622 September 2016
A sweet, quirky and often unflinching and melancholy look into the world of Artist Stefhan Pokorny, Role Playing Evangelist. This is a wonderfully charming documentary that reminds us how important it is to maintain a sense of wild wonder in one's creativity and to seize joy and fun at every opportunity. As a classically trained artist, Stefan finds himself at odds with the New York art scene, but finds an outlet and makes a living indulging his passion, creating and marketing environments for Dungeons & Dragons games.

The movie could have perhaps done with a short primer at the start to introduce the audience to what exactly Dungeons & Dragons and Role-Playing Games are about, but that's a minor quibble- it's a wonderful, touching paean to the love of family and the liberation to be gained in following your artistic vision.

Highly recommended.

Nice movie
durwinfeanora22 September 2016
That movie was nice and as advertised. I liked to see the underside of a kickstarter. I liked to learn about stefan. He's an awesome artist, the customer care of his company is one of the best.

I watched this with a smile and would listen to it again. For a dnd lover, it's easy to feel touched. Having a company that is in roleplaying and dnd is not an easy thing.

I do think it can help people to do what the really like, to push their dreams.

In this movie, we don't see only the good parts but also how human he is. Nobody is perfect. There should be more company like that. And I would like to see more of it. What about a complete game?

Interesting insight into a Man and his legacy.
Richard-Ankney-Jr22 September 2016
Warning: Spoilers
Being a life long fan of the fantasy genre and Dungeons and Dragons. I found this to be an interesting look behind the curtain. Stefan shows what stresses a person can have when trying to push a successful Kickstarter campaign. It also shows that everyone has a history, but hopefully a future as well in an industry like gaming, and miniatures. If you are a fan of Dungeons and Dragons, Dwarven Forge products and the gaming industry this is a good watch, especially to watch with friends who also enjoy the genre. My favorite parts of the film were seeing people from the industry who I have met and played games they helped to create. Also, the tie ins with the convention scene (Gen Con and GaryCon.) And finally watching the actual crafting of some of the Dwarven Forge products that was a pretty cool part indeed. Now I need to go build my Dungeons!!

An interesting documentary
ancientvaults22 September 2016
A roaming documentary that follows a gamer as he runs games of Dungeons and Dragons and hopes to see his crowdsourcing goals reach fruition. An interesting look into gamer life and a poignant and at times moving reflection of the geek in all of us. This documentary is heartfelt and fun, with moments of seriousness rooted in the real world, which is why some of us escape into imagined worlds, for a break from the chores and situations that life throws at us. Once I started watching I couldn't be distracted away and I have encouraged others to see this film as well. If you are interested in gaming, how crowdsourcing works or just want to watch an interesting slice of life documentary The Dwarvenaut is an excellent choice.

This is a movie about contemporary startup life far from Silicon Valley and its angle investors, but with more heart and soul, failure and triumphs.
anna-8450022 September 2016
As a long time gamer couldn't resist watching this movie. There have been a handful of movies centered around Roleplaying Games and D&D, documentary and fictional. But this one is different from the others, it not about D&D itself, its about a person playing it and living it, his story, motivation, difficulties and how he worked to overcome them.

It could have ended there for me having seen enough films about people struggle with their shortcomings, but camera work and well executed production made me sit through the first part. The story is more about trying to realize your passions, be a successful artist and create something that others sharing your passion will enjoy. The story have been told numerous times about rock stars, authors, poets, revolutionaries and others. This time it is about one of us a fellow gamer and nerd, with all the faults and issues like we all have. But just like other heroes Stefan Pokorny have something that few of us have, bravery.

To let the camera follow you through a project and lay it bare with all its ups and downs is brave. Stefan is brave enough to really do it and the film makers have succeeded in bringing out a multifaceted look at Stefan, his ideas, crazy or not to be determined during the course of the film. This is a movie about contemporary startup life far from Silicon Valley and its angle investors, but with more heart and soul, failure and triumphs.

Watching it will not give you any insights in how to run a startup, but it will tell you a lot about how someone running a startup experience it. It is a lesson in the life of a fellow nerd, and all of us who have lived through life being different. Stefan have embraced that difference and made something great of it, great not only for himself but for all of us who enjoy sitting around a table playing our favorite game. This films tells that story in a full. Add good camera work and editing and you have a film you should watch, feel and see yourself in.

The inspiring story of one man's struggles to make his dream come to life
carlosamoran22 September 2016
As a fellow New Yorker I can attest to the hardships of growing up in the city. Trying to make something of yourself here is beyond all measures difficult. Doing so whilst incorporating your love for Dungeons & Dragons? Now that would seem ludicrous.

This movie will move you. Seeing the passion for his craft, his personal struggles, the craftsmanship and artistic talent shown will make you believe you can do it as well if you truly tried. A well balanced film between it's heartfelt storytelling, it's strong narration, and its capture of jovial times.

You will laugh, you will cry, you will cheer, you will be inspired. You will want to pick up your own dungeon set, call up your friends, and start a new campaign of your own. The artist in you will empathize and the child in you will rejoice.

I would recommend this film to everyone I know.

∞/10 * Dogs, and dog lovers alike will also approve and rejoice *

A Raw Look into the creator of Dwarven Forge
ghostbear-4204122 September 2016
This is not a Documentary about Dwarven Forge the company. I had no misunderstanding this was a Documentary about the Dwarvenaught. The man that turned his passion into a company.

We got a rare glimpse something you nearly never see. WE See Stefan Pokorny,Raw, Real & Unfiltered. It was a glimpse into the life of an artist. And like many great amazing artists. It's not always pretty. But he's an honest soul and his passion and heart are worn on his sleeve.

The Dwarvenaught is a Journey, We see where Stefan Pokorny came from, The family that raised him, the hobby that he loves that he turned into a company. All while the threat of losing it all ticks away in the background of his most ambitious project of a lifetime counts down on Kickstarter.

Can gaming save your life?
agooga22 September 2016
Warning: Spoilers
As a lifelong gamer, crafter, figure painter, model maker, this movie was poised to be right in my wheelhouse. I've seen Dwarven Forge's products before and I've been impressed with their quality, but I'd never considered the backstory. But this sweet, charming documentary went far beyond giving me a look at the company and the process of how the products are made.

Focusing in primarily on the CEO of Dwarven Forge, Stefan Pokorny, a bacchanalian prankster with a troubled past and the talent of an old-world master craftsman and artist, the film finds it's way into his head and there we stay for the most of the running time. We follow Pokorny to some gaming conventions, through a move to bigger digs, and most importantly, along a Kickstarter campaign which seeks to raise two million dollars in funding to launch a new city-building system. Here, I found the film relying on some rather conventional dramatic techniques as the Kickstarter campaign is portrayed as an "all-or-nothing" quest that will spell certain doom for Dwarven Forge if it fails to yield the expected total.

The crafter in me, perhaps, longed for a little more of the process, but the human being in me was drawn into Pokorny's world, his reflections on his past and his adoptive parents and how he misses them since their passing and how he wishes that they could witness his successes. This is a powerful emotion that many middle-agers face, especially in a world where it's becoming more and more common for the children to fare less well than their parents.

I was impressed at times with the crafting and editing of the film as well, finding moments of subtle, warm humor and nice use of music and montage. A few scenes fall a little flat, as in where Pokorny donates some product to a charity auction at a convention, and I wanted to see a bit more from his staff and colleagues. I also wanted to see a little more of how his products are actually used in gaming, but the fact is that Pokorny's own story and personality are the drivers of this film, and it's more broadly interesting to hear how gaming and art saved him from following a path of self-destruction, and as such, this film becomes compelling to any viewer, not just gamers. All in all a highly recommended film.

Awesome Movie about the Life and times of a great Artist
letsgoboardin-0126122 September 2016
Warning: Spoilers
This is a fun film about the life of a great Artist. The movie spends lots of time going over Stephans Family and his relationship with his Parents. Covers his childhood and schooling and career as a young adult. Showing that he was not just a nerd who hit on something by accident, but that he is a legit Artist whose life's passions came together in his ultimate expression his art... A miniature city that is modular and perfect for table top play.

The Film is not the story of the game or even the story of miniature terrain. Just simply a Documentary about an artist journey through life and the final long awaited metamorphosis into finding his true form.

It is touching to see such personal details about his relationship with his parents. It is entertaining to see the chaos of his travels and meetings and the play by play of the Kick Starter progress builds up the tempo as the movie goes on.

I enjoyed this and will watch it a few more times I am sure.

The Best D&D Documentary Yet...
sculptlive22 September 2016
Let's face it, Dungeons & Dragons, and the games playing culture that comes with it, is rather fringe, weird, and misunderstood. Some attempts to present D&D gamers in film have been tried before, but few are honest, clear, or make any meaningful impact when watched. This piece, directed by Josh Bishop (also see 'Made in Japan'), succeeds by instead focusing on the life of one unique D&D player, Stefan Pokorny. It takes an honest tour of his journey as a successful creator of D&D aftermarket products, and through that same bold honesty, illuminates the wider world of the gaming hobby he serves and lives in with better clarity and meaning than previous directors were able to. Films that explore the underbelly of the fantasy gaming culture are rare enough to find. This one is unique in it's ability to show you something new, and to make you care.

Awesome documentary!
ghost_hunter-2710722 September 2016
This documentary is a fascinating look into the founder, his childhood, the struggles and challenges he has faced both as a person growing up in New York and as a CEO of a business. The documentary was very well done, it has its funny moments that you get to see just how much energy Stefan brings to the table, and at Gen Con him interacting with visitors and fans. It also has its moments where you can better understand how hard it is to run a small business in a market where there is becoming more competition, and the challenges it brings. He has to attend gaming event to keep the edge and that involves lots of travel. There are also parts where he really bares his soul when he talks about growing up in New York, his birth parents, the people who adopted and raised him, how he became an artist and the founding of his company Dwarven Forge.

This documentary follows his endeavors with the 3 (of 4) successful Kickstarter campaigns he has had, and if they were to fail would have spelled the end of his business, but for 4 times he risked it all and won. The product his business makes enhances the game play for everyone that uses it.In the video you will hear testimony from people who collects Dwarven Forge. When it comes to gaming terrain Dwarven Forge and Stefan are the gold standard, the benchmark other strive to reach. Over all this is a wonderful documentary, I would highly suggest to anyone who plays Dungeons & Dragons (of any edition) or to people into any RPGs to check out. My wife and I enjoyed it so much we bought the DVD.

An Entertaining and Emotional Triumph!
malikjoker22 September 2016
The Dwarvenaut is the story of Stefen Pokorny, founder of the wildly successful Dwarven Forge line of terrain models for table top role playing games.

Framed around the "will-they-or-won't-they" drama of a Kickstarter launch, Pokorny tells about his life growing up in an adopted family as well as more troubled times during his adolescence. The result is a heartwarming, touching, and at times tear inducing documentary that transcends the boundaries of its subject. The pure enjoyment of watching Pokorny's enthusiasm for the hobby that has become his career is infectious. It becomes impossible not to root for this man.

The Dwarvenaut is a must see film for fans of table-top gaming, but the amazing thing is this movie speaks to everyone. A wonderful, wonderful film.

Essential in my live
fitoasturgs22 September 2016
A great documentary. Displays the day to day during a kickstarter project, that promotes the leader of Dwarven Forge, Stefan Pokorny.

Throughout the movie the director has managed to combine perfectly the way his life, the great influence that the RPG Dungeons & Dragons has had on him, so he has focused his artistic and professional career offer fans of that game, the possibility of having a product of superb scenery.

It is combined with the great influence they have had their parents in their life that have marked their way of understanding the world.

Moreover it is one of the few documentaries that without focusing on it shows the reality of these games fond. Shows how the person are more important that the player. You can see the mark that Gary Gygax left in our hearts, teaching us that to play the rpg's in the fictional adventures, it is the same in real life, because it promotes the creation of groups of friends who will continue united in their lives despite the difficulties they are in life. That is ultimately the role entertainment that unites people, and this domumental through the person of Stephan manages to make it known.

The Dwarvenaut, an essential documentary in my life.
