Learn more- James rushes to Kerry and Bernice and Bernice complains about her wrist. Kerry keeps trying to tell them that she can't see out of one eye but no one seems to pay any attention to her.
Ashley tells Bob that his dementia is affecting his life greatly. Ashley tells Bob that he needs to make sure that Arthur, Gabby and his dad are properly cared for when he can no longer do it. Bob asks what Harriet thinks of it and Ashley admits that he hasn't told her. Ashley questions whether Harriet really wants to know what their future holds and explains that he'll find out at his hospital appointment today how much longer he'll remain himself. Bob insists on attending the appointment with Ashley because no one should have to go through this alone.
Paddy goes to see Tess at school and begs her to reconsider being Leo's teacher. Tess tells Paddy that they shouldn't be seeing so much of each other. Paddy asks Tess to forget about what's happened between them.
James has taken Kerry and Bernice to the caff and Harriet walks in. Kerry complains that she still can't see out of one eye and Harriet asks her to cover her good eye. Harriet then waves some cash in front of Kerry's other eye and she doesn't reach for it. Harriet and Bernice realize that Kerry's not faking her blindness and they all head to hospital. Kerry asks Brenda to call Dan for her.
Zak tells Joanie that Kyle talks on and on about wanting to ride the tractor at the farm. Joanie suggests that Zak take Kyle to the farm but he replies that Cain is the only one who should be taking him to look at tractors. Joanie says that she'll call Cain but Zak tells her that the way to get Cain to do something is to think up a devious plan that he won't see coming.
Tess tells Paddy that she moved classes in order to put some distance between them which is what she thought he wanted. Paddy says it is what he wants but Tess tells him that it's hard on her being around him. Paddy assures her that nothing will ever happen between them again and rationalizes that Leo shouldn't suffer for their mistake. Tess agrees to ask to be returned to Leo's class and Paddy thanks her. On his way out the door, though, he tells her that it isn't easier for him to be around her.
Ashley get's called into the doctor's office and he requests that Bob join him.
Cain shows up at the Dingle house with a drill and Joanie tells him that Zak was hoping that Cain could help put up some shelves in Kyle's room. Joanie promises him tea if he helps out. After Cain heads upstairs, Joanie lets Zak and Kyle in and Joanie and Zak scheme about getting Cain and Kyle together.
Dr. Johnson tells Ashley that he has early onset vascular dementia. Ashley asks if it's the same as Alzheimer's and Dr. Johnson responds that it's actually a less common form of dementia caused by TIA's (transient ischemic attacks, or mini-strokes). Ashley asks whether it's curable and the doctor responds that it's not but there is medication that can help control the underlying causes. Ashley asks Dr. Johnson how long before everything is completely gone. She insists that she's unable to answer that but Ashley continues to push. Dr. Johnson explains that his rate of deterioration depends on the frequency and severity of his strokes.
Kerry is evaluated in A&E and the doctor diagnosis her with diabetic retinopathy. He explains that years of uncontrolled diabetes causes the cells at the back of the eye to become damaged, resulting in blindness. The doctor tells Kerry that she'll need an operation and she tries leaving. Harriet asks what will happen if she doesn't have the operation and the doctor informs her that she could lose her sight permanently.
Paddy joins Rhona in the pub and she tells him that the school's just called to inform them that Tess is being moved back into Leo's classroom. Rhona admits that she's concerned about Tess' flip-flopping but Paddy reassures her that the ill teacher probably has just returned and that it has nothing to do about Tess. Paddy excuses himself to go to the loo but he calls Tess from the back hall. He leaves her a voice mail message to thank her for returning to Leo's classroom. He further tells her that they should remove each other's number from their phones and says that he shouldn't have told her that it wasn't easy for him to be around her. He ends the call and starts to delete her number but can't do it in the end.
Kerry threatens to leave A&E and Harriet tells her that she needs to have her eye taken care of or she'll lose her vision. Bernice adds that if Kerry wants to see Kyle and Amelia grow up, she should do as she's told. The doctor tells Kerry that, in addition to the operation, she'll need to stop smoking and cut out sugary foods. He also tells her that she'll need to manage her diabetes and be followed regularly by a doctor. Dan and Lawrence enter their cubicle and Dan and Kerry kiss while Lawrence and Bernice awkwardly look on.
Bob takes Ashley back to the caff. Brenda asks all kinds of questions about what they'd been up to but Bob tells her to go home and put her feet up. After Brenda leaves, Ashley gets angry at Bob when he tells him that he's sorry. Ashley begins crying when he realises that he won't be able to remember his kid's names or recognize their faces. Ashley admits that he's done bad things in his life but he doesn't deserve this. He tells Bob that he doesn't want his kids to see him when it gets too bad. Bob tells him that he should be telling Harriet or Laurel this and he reassures Bob that he will.
Back at the hospital, Kerry and Bernice make up. Kerry tells everyone that she'll change her behaviour and Dan reassures her that she'll always be beautiful to him. They begin kissing again which prompts Lawrence to wrap his arm around Bernice but he hurts her wrist in the process. Bernice becomes upset and stomps off.
Cain comes down after putting up the shelves and Joanie insists that he stay for tea. He tries to leave but she insists, then she and Zak place Kyle next to him at the table. Cain gets Kyle to eat and Zak comments that he must have the magic touch since Kyle's normally very stubborn at the table.
Harriet joins Ashley at the pub and tells him about being at the hospital with Kerry. She asks about the Village Hall money and Ashley says that it's been found and that it had all been a big misunderstanding. As Ashley prepares to tell Harriet about his dementia, she begins banging on about how awful it will be for Dan to have to take care of Kerry after her operation. Harriet then asks Ashley what he wanted to talk to her about and he responds that it was just about the money. He excuses himself to go to the loo but heads out back of the pub and cries.
