Cat finds a 'mate'
Tweekums1 November 2016
Warning: Spoilers
As they crew approach an asteroid field in Starbug Kryten informs them that it is home to a tribe of vampire-Gelfs that feast on virgins… Cat suddenly becomes very scared despite assuring the others that he has two female cats on Z Deck. Much to his relief the others agree to go round the Gelf-space. While doing so they find another ship; scans show that it has two lifeforms aboard; a Mercenoid and its prisoner… and they are heading straight into a blackhole. The crew decides that they will rescue the prisoner and Cat is certainly pleased they did as it is a female cat! At least they think it is; soon afterwards they discover that it is a Polymorth; a creature that changes its appearance to look like its victim's perfect partner. Unfortunately by the time they discover this she has planted her eggs in Cat!

This episode brings series eleven of 'Red Dwarf' to a successful conclusion; there are plenty of laughs to be had… mostly at Cat's expense. It was particularly funny when he boasted about his activities with the 'female cat' that he thought were sex but was clearly something rather different… and rather disturbing. The Mercenoid was an effective threat to the crew although they have faced similar beings before. The female Cat was a bit less interesting… at least until we learn her true nature then it makes perfect sense that she behaved like Cat at his most cat-like; she was imitating his perfect mate. The scene where Rimmer warns the rest of the crew about lifeforms in their vicinity which turns out to be the crew was pretty funny… it would have been much funnier if it hadn't been the main part of the series trailer though! The cast does a solid job as one might expect after so many series together. Overall this was an enjoyable episode in an enjoyable series; I hope series twelve proves to be this good.

Back on form

I watched the first 6 seasons when they first aired which gives you some idea of how old I am. I was a huge fan and loved the first 5 seasons. I didn't really enjoy season 6 and I stopped watching by the beginning of season 7. I recently started watching them again with my son and this time decided to go all the way through. Apart from the odd laugh here and there season 6 - 10 are patchy at best. Season 11 is back to brilliance and this last episode had me in tears of laughter just like the old days. Yes it had elements of previous episodes but with a fresh twist and imaginative kicks Red Dwarf is back on form.

Warning: Spoilers
Polymorph III this episode could be. Though we have seen Polymorphs since PM II, I believe. Anyway this episode was great, possibly my favourite in season 11. A return to classic Red Dwarf, the jokes were good, the plot was good, it felt Red-Dwarfy. Perfect.

Solid finish to series 11

The Cat has his possible virginity questioned before the crew make an interesting discovery.

I enjoyed this one for the fairly consistent humour and Danny-John Jules having the spotlight for a change.

The story is a bit of a mixture of concepts seen in previous episodes, but it works pretty well regardless of the originality. There is a nice homage to the Alien franchise thrown in for nerds like me. I won't say anymore as it would spoil a plot reveal.

I enjoyed the humour, which contained some comical situations, decent banter between the characters and pretty funny sight gags.

All cast were great as always, particularly Danny-John Jules who takes centre stage for a large part of the episode and does it well. When appearing on Red Dwarf as the Cat, Jules doesn't look like he's visibly aged since the show started and I think it works well for such a vain character.

For me it was a 7.5/10, but for IMDB I always round upwards.

Can of Worms

The final episode of the eleventh series of Red Dwarf just has something derivative about it as it seems to have elements from past stories.

Ir starts of with Kryten trying to tempt Rimmer to use a personality changing machine. As they go to see Lister they find that Starbug has gone off course because Lister fell asleep after Sunday lunch. It is now Monday. They are now in an asteroid belt that is home to the Vampire- Gelfs that seek out virgins much to Cat's dismay.

As they decide to go round a longer route they find another ship that has a Mercenoid carrying a prisoner heading for a black hole. The Mercenoid is willing to give up his life for the promise of free upgrades in the afterlife. The crew decides to rescue the prisoner even though they have no idea how dangerous the prisoner might be.

It turns out that the prisoner is a female cat, which means plenty of James Brown type caterwauling. It is just too good to be true as the female cat is a Polymorph that plans to lay eggs in Cat while he thinks he is mating with her. The rest of the crew now realise how dangerous the prisoner was. They now have to find a way of Cat giving birth to little polymorphs and disposing of them.

A fair episode but I got the feeling that the writer might have run out of ideas here because I felt I have seen it all before. Amusing but nothing laugh out loud.
