Pilot

Z is the Amazon series that charts the relationship between brassy southern belle Zelda Sayre (Christina Ricci) and F Scott Fitzgerald. Zelda would go on to become his wife and muse.

In the pilot episode, Zelda lives in a small town which has little to do apart from gossip and flirting. She sneaks off to dance with soldiers much to the irritation of her stern father, a judge.

It is there Zelda dances with F Scott whose army unit is based nearby, sparks fly for him when he see the dazzling Zelda but we would be hard pushed to notice as the actor is bland.

Not so with Ricci, she gives an energetic performance but she is too old to be playing young Zelda.

This is a handsomely mounted and sumptuous looking series. It lacks fizz and going by the opening episode it is just too slight.

"Z" or "Zelda" is a half-hour movie that was released roughly 2 weeks ago with the prospect of being the pilot episode to a television show that is going to get picked up for at least 1 season. It stars Golden Globe nominee Christina Ricci as Zelda Fitzgerald and Gavin Stenhouse as F. Scott Fitzgerald. My favorite cast member, however, is David Strathairn. I was certainly disappointed by this little movie. I may be biased as I have never been too big on Ricci, but I thought she wasn't particularly memorable here. If I hadn't known this was about Zelda, I probably hardly would have recognized and she adds nothing that makes the character somewhat unique. And Strathairn did not wow me either playing a character as a strict, worried dad, something we have seen a hundred times already. If this should really get picked up, I doubt I will keep watching unless this really improves a lot. Judging from this first episode directed by prolific actor Tim Blake Nelson, it is nothing more than another mediocre period piece drama with solid costumes. Not recommended.
