The closing minutes of Loki‘s Season 2 finale left us skeptical that the show could ever come back for a third season — but executive producer Kevin Wright has a different vision.
When the Nov. 9 finale concluded (read our full recap), Tom Hiddleston’s character had found a way to save all of time and space: by weaving the temporal loom’s many branched timelines into the World Tree (aka Yggdrasill) that connects the Nine Realms, and becoming the keeper of the Sacred Timeline who is seated on the throne at the World Tree’s center. Bill Kenwright, the prolific West End producer behind the hit musicals Blood Brothers, Whistle Down the Wind and Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat who would later go on to become an owner and chairman of his boyhood soccer club Everton, has died. He was 78.
In a statement, Everton said Kenwright died peacefully, “surrounded by his family and loved ones.” This month, the Premier League club revealed that Kenwright had recently undergone surgery to remove a cancerous tumor from his liver.
“The world of British theatre without Bill Kenwright seems impossible,” said fellow theater impresario Cameron Mackintosh in a statement on X. “In my lifetime, there has never been anyone like Bill. He’s totally irreplaceable, and we will miss him so.”

The star with the gorgeous calypso voice was also a naturally passionate actor who appeared in heists, colonial confrontations – and even the last love triangle on Earth
In the middle of the 20th century, Harry Belafonte was at the dizzying high point of his stunning multi-hyphenate celebrity: this handsome, athletic, Caribbean-American star with a gorgeous calypso singing voice was at the top of his game in music, movies and politics. He was the million-selling artist whose easy and sensuous musical stylings and lighter-skinned image made him acceptable to white audiences. But this didn’t stop him having a fierce screen presence and an even fiercer commitment to civil rights. He was the friend and comrade of Paul Robeson and Martin Luther King Jr – and his crossover success, incidentally, never stopped him being subject to the ugliest kind of bigotry from racists who saw his fame as a kind of infiltration.

There’s been palpable tension between Burden of Truth‘s Billy and Joanna throughout the Canadian import’s final season, and the series finale, at first, seemed to be adding to it.
With Joanna resigning her law license, Billy is upset that she made a big life decision without even talking to him about it. While she uses her last day as a lawyer to work with Luna on getting Dee a settlement, Billy meets up with his father, who gives him some tough but surprisingly good advice when the lawyer laments that Crawford Chang isn’t much of an operation without Joanna.

And just like that – here comes spring. Amazon Prime‘s list of new releases for April 2021 isn’t as cheery as one would expect from the sunny season. But perhaps that’s by design – you should be outside anyway!
Amazon’s most prominent original series for April 2021 is undoubtedly Them from multi-hyphenate Lena Waithe. This horror anthology’s first season, subtitled “Covenant”, will center on a Black family in the 1950s who move from North Carolina to a white neighborhood in Los Angeles. It premieres on April 9. Given its name and premise, Them is drawing some (largely joke-y) comparisons to Jordan Peele’s Us on social media. But hey, the world could always use some more Us.

Just moments ago, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences revealed the total number of movies that are eligible to win their Best Picture prize. This time around, there are 366 films that are in contention to take the Oscar for Best Picture. That would be the largest number for the Academy in a half century, which is an interesting quirk, considering the expanded Academy Awards eligibility this year. The list is below, but it contains all of the expected flicks, as you might imagine. Now, we just have to wait a few more weeks and see which titles are nominated for Best Picture. Then, we can whittle this list down from 366 to something less than ten. Sit tight for that… Here are all 366 films eligible for this year’s Best Picture Oscar: Absent Now the Dead Accidental Luxuriance of the Translucent Watery Rebus Alberto and the Concrete Jungle All...

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences on Thursday revealed the 366 feature films that are eligible for consideration at the 93rd Oscars, which are set to air April 25 live on ABC.
The total number of films is up from last year’s 344 films in contention.
This year’s list was compiled based on tweaked eligibility rules implemented because of the coronavirus pandemic, which has pushed the ceremony to its latest date ever. For this year, feature films had to open by February 28 in a commercial motion picture theater for a seven-day qualifying run in at least one of six metro areas: Los Angeles County, New York City, the Bay Area, Chicago, Miami and Atlanta. Drive-in theaters open nightly were included as qualifying venues, as were films intended for theatrical release but because of the lockdown made available first via streaming, VOD service or other broadcast.

This year’s Oscars have set a new record for the largest number of entries ever in the Best Original Song category, but the 105 eligible songs do not include Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross’ “(If Only You Could) Save Me,” a 1930s-style big band song from “Mank” that was recently nominated for the second annual Society of Composers and Lyricists Awards.

The number of films available to Oscar voters in a screening room devoted to the Best Picture category hit the 200 mark on Wednesday, which means that $2.5 million has entered the Academy coffers from films paying $12,500 each to be represented in the screening room.
The members-only Academy Screening Room hit the milestone with the addition of more than a dozen movies this week, including Fisher Stevens’ “Palmer,” Lee Daniels’ “The United States vs. Billie Holiday,” John Lee Hancock’s “The Little Things,” the Russo brothers’ “Cherry,” Josh Trank’s “Capone,” the documentary “Coup 53,” the Studio Ghibli animated film “Earwig and the Witch,” the international films “Funny Boy” and “Bacarau” (neither eligible in the Oscars’ Best International Feature Film category) and some off-the-wall selections, including “Snake White – Love Endures” and “Soorarai Pottru.”
Other late additions to the screening room have included “Minari,” “Promising Young Woman,” “The White Tiger” and “Cherry,” which were not added until January.

The CW’s “Nancy Drew” spinoff series “Tom Swift,” which is currently in the development stage, has cast Tian Richards in the title role.
Richards will be introduced as the character in an upcoming episode of “Nancy Drew” that will serve as a backdoor pilot for “Tom Swift.” On the installment, Tom will crash into one of Nancy Drew’s investigations, an event which Nancy interprets as supernatural and Tom believes to be cosmically paranormal.
Should “Tom Swift” be ordered to series, Richards would reprise the role to lead that show.
“Tom Swift” follows the serialized adventures of its titular Black, gay, billionaire inventor who is thrust into a world of sci-fi conspiracy and unexplained phenomena after the shocking disappearance of his father. My documentary is a startling revelation about the abysmal working conditions in Bollywood which is now laying claim to be a global giant and churning out thousands of hours of content. The technicians and workers are deprived of social security and long punishing working hours take their toll on their health. The basic and fundamental safety measures are absent leading to accidents with unfailing regularity. Basic facilities such as clean toilets and hygienically prepared food are not accessible. The ‘Whale Shark Jack’ team.
Screenwest has selected three projects for development through the first stage of its West Coast Visions initiative: Miranda and Khrob Edmonds’ Whale Shark Jack, Zoe Pepper’s Fads & Miracles and David Vincent Smith’s Burden.
Each project will receive $20,000, supporting a six month development period. One of the projects will then be selected to receive $750,000 in West Coast Visions production funding.
West Coast Visions is a long-running program designed to support first-time feature directors and the production of low budget features in Western Australia.
This is the first year that it has been broken down into two stages; Screenwest adjusted the program to include a development stage in order to support multiple projects, fast track emerging talent and ensure the final project is production ready.

ABC’s game-show trio of Holey Moley, newcomer Don’t and To Tell the Truth swept their respective time slots Thursday, giving the network overall victories for the night in both the adults 18-49 demographic and viewers as the lineup returned from a week off.
Don’t continued to be the biggest draw, with the show scoring a night-leading 0.7 rating in the demo and 3.25 million viewers, even with its last original two weeks ago. Holey Moley, meanwhile, dipped a tenth, and To Tell the Truth was even.
Univision finished second overall in the demo last night with its lineup of Te Doy La Vida, Amor Eterno.
NBC’s night included back-to-back airings of Blindspot, with a special 8 Pm showing in the spot formerly occupied by Council of Dads on par with last week’s regular episode, while a 9 Pm episode...

Mid-June is prime summer-movie playtime, a period that launched massive hits like “Incredibles 2” and “Jurassic World.” That’s not our world now, and the top performing films look very different: “Da 5 Bloods” on Netflix, Universal’s “The King of Staten Island” on premium VOD, and a weird little Kevin James movie like “Becky” from Quiver Distribution.
Spike Lee’s latest, one of the best-reviewed films of the year and Netflix’s first potential awards contender, is listed at not only #1 among the streamer’s movies, but also tops their overall content list. It reached that its second day out, and remained so for three days running. The durability will count: Netflix represents mass-audience tastes, similar to wide-release movies.

Sports Illustrated Studios is launching to develop feature film and television projects as a joint venture between David Glasser’s 101 Studios and Sports Illustrated owner Authentic Brands Group.
The company plans a slate of several television series and feature films per year. 101 Studios will be managing and overseeing all production, distribution and marketing for Sports Illustrated Studios in collaboration with Abg, which purchased Sports Illustrated in May from Meredith Corp. for $110 million.
“At the core of 101 Studios, we seek to tell stories that create cultural conversations, which is the same pillar behind the stories that have been told and continue to be told by Sports Illustrated,” said Glasser, CEO of 101 Studios. “Sports Illustrated has covered every major story in sports since the 1950s and, before the Internet, they were often the only publication covering the most famous and memorable stories in depth. In this strange but true story, Garrett Hedlund plays a young white man is persecuted after leaving the Ku Klux Klan he was raised in but finds shelter with a forgiving black reverend (Forest Whitaker) in Burden.
The title hints at various meanings, although it is also the last name of the person at the center of this inspiring drama. A strong, nuanced performance by Garrett Hedlund adds greatly to director Andrew Heckler’s true story-inspired drama about redemption and compassion, In fact, the film benefits in many ways from an impressive cast, including Forest Whitaker, Tom Wilkinson, Andrea Riseborough and Usher Raymond, each of whom give affecting performances in this tale of human transformation.

Despite a handful of films postponing their release dates as a precautionary measure in the wake of the coronavirus, the specialty box office is persevering and hoping that arthouse audience will come through. Last week, A24’s First Cow delivered a career-high opening for Kelly Reichardt — but that was before the coronavirus turned into a pandemic. With events being canceled, the rise of concern and social-distancing becoming a common practice, we’ll have to see how this will impact the limited release titles, which is a very different creature than wide-release titles.
Leading the pack this week is the Focus Features title Never Rarely Sometimes Always directed by Eliza Hittman and starring Sidney Flanigan, Talia Ryder, Théodore Pellerin, Ryan Eggold and Sharon Van Etten. Mike Burden and Reverend David Kennedy’s 24-year friendship had an unlikely beginning.
When they first met in Laurens S.C., Burden was grand dragon of the local Kkk and Kennedy, an African-American pastor who grew up in segregated housing. At the time, Kennedy was trying to fight the existence of the small town’s Redneck Shop — a store, which was Burden’s idea, that sold racist memorabilia and hosted an unofficial Kkk museum.
“It’s disgusting,” Burden, 50, tells People in the latest issue, about returning to the Echo theater, which housed the Redneck Shop and was open from 1996 to...

Benh Zeitlin’s “Wendy” took the lead among indie films struggling to find footing for their limited release openings this weekend, with the grittier take on “Peter Pan” only grossing $30,000 from its four-screen New York/Los Angeles release for a $7,500 average.
It’s a far cry from Zeitlin’s Oscar-nominated “Beasts of the Southern Wild,” which had an opening average of $42,425 in the summer of 2012 and went on to gross $21 million worldwide. Starring Devin France as a girl who follows a reckless boy into a world where time is twisted, “Wendy” premiered at Sundance and received mixed reviews with a 40% Rotten Tomatoes score. It will expand to 10 more cities next weekend.
Sony Pictures Classics’ “Greed” opened this weekend to $28,496 from four screens for an average of $7,124. From the actor-director team of Steve Coogan and Michael Winterbottom, this satire of the fashion world and the ultra-rich has a 59% score on Rotten Tomatoes.

“Emma” (Focus) had a strong initial second weekend expansion, but the top news comes from two unexpected niche releases. The top 10 successes of “My Hero Academia: Heroes Rising” (Funimation) and the second weekend of “Impractical Jokers: The Movie” (truTV) suggest new paths to theatrical success.
An exclusive date for “Saint Frances” (Oscilloscope) stood out in a weekend that saw poor initial play for “Wendy” (Searchlight) and “Greed” (Sony Pictures Classics) — films with top directors and mediocre or worse reviews.

My Hero Academia: Heroes Rising (Funimation) – Metacritic: 71
$5,109,000 in 1,260 theaters; PTA (per theater average): $4,054; Cumulative: $8,482,000
Where did this come from? This second film from the popular Manga action comic opened on Wednesday from Funimation, a Sony Pictures-related company, with the top gross opening day. But rather than just play like an event as similar films, it continued its run to end up as the surprise #4 film overall this weekend.

Universal and Blumhouse's The Invisible Man delivered on expectations, becoming the first true stand out among the year's several horror films to have already hit theaters. At the same time FUNimation's My Hero Academia: Heroes Rising is already the studio's second largest release of all-time after just three days in theaters.
With an estimated $29 million, Universal and Blumhouse's The Invisible Man finished atop the weekend box office. Critics and audiences alike took to the film, as it holds a 89% critics score on RottenTomatoes to go along with 90% audience score. Opening day audiences also gave the film a "B+" CinemaScore, which is a solid result for a genre film. Looking ahead, fellow Blumhouse releases with similar debuts include Happy Death Day, Insidious: The Last Key and The Purge: Anarchy and they finished with domestic runs from $55-71 million, suggesting great things for this $7 million production.

The specialty box office is headed towards the second star on the right and straight on till morning with Benh Zeitlin’s magical adventure Wendy, a fresh reimagination of J. M. Barrie’s classic tale of Peter Pan. The pic from Searclight Pictures is Zeitlin’s follow up to his Oscar-nominated Beasts of the Southern Wild which was released in 2012.
Co-written by Zeitlin and his sister Eliza, Wendy isn’t necessarily cut from the same cloth from Disney animated feature, rather it speaks to Zeitlin’s hyperealstic aesthtetic. The film, which debuted at Sundance earlier this year, stars newcomer Devin France in the titular role of Wendy, based on the heroine Wendy Darling of Peter Pan. In Zeitlin’s vision of Neverland, Wendy and her friends get whisked away by a boy named Peter where they get lost on a mysterious island where no one ages and time stands still.

Andrew Heckler has been spreading the same message for two decades. When the first-time filmmaker debuted his real-life drama “Burden” at Sundance in 2018, he teared up as he told a packed house what he hoped they would get out of it. “You can never turn an enemy into a friend through hate, you can only turn an enemy into a friend through love,” Heckler said, recalling the moment in a recent interview with IndieWire. “This is a real story about real people who had every reason not to do this, but they stuck through it, and the end is real love and real friendship and real understanding.”
The film was greeted with a five-minute standing ovation, but it would take two long years for “Burden” to find its way to theaters.

"I'm praying for some kind of sign... If this ain't a sign, then I don't know what is." Two years later this is finally being released. 101 Studios has debuted the second trailer for indie drama Burden, a film about the Kkk and a former Klansman who gives up his ways thanks to the help of a local reverend. This initially premiered at the 2018 Sundance Film Festival, two years ago, winning the Audience Award but it never got released like every other film from that fest. Garrett Hedlund stars as Mike Burden, a Klansman whose relationships with a single mother and a high school friend force him to re-examine his long-held beliefs. It also features Forest Whitaker, Andrea Riseborough, Tom Wilkinson, Usher Raymond, and Tess Harper. This looks like a tough one to watch, but Whitaker's powerful speech at the end makes this worthy. Here's the second official trailer (+ poster) for Andrew Heckler's Burden,...

With Sundance wrapping up, we’ve seen quite a few films that will likely make big waves later this year when they’re released to the general public. As is the case with many of these festival films, they normally have a bit of a waiting period from the time they premiere to when they’ll arrive at your multiplex (or streaming service). But not many wait as long as the upcoming drama “Burden,” which had its world premiere at Sundance in 2018.

Exclusive: Dexter Darden is set as a lead in Peacock’s upcoming Saved By The Bell reboot.
Darden joins original series cast members Elizabeth Berkley and Mario Lopez in the new iteration of the high-school-set comedy on NBCUniversal’s forthcoming streaming service set to launch in April. Josie Totah stars as Lexi.
In the new Saved by the Bell, California governor Zack Morris gets into hot water for closing too many low-income high school and proposes they send the affected students to the highest performing schools in the state, including Bayside High.
