A mostly strong episode with a few cracks.

As a whole, a good episode. The main cast stays strong, and the plot is still fairly gripping.

My only significant criticism is how just about every secondary character is basically crazy. It's a tad unbelievable and cartoonish how pretty much everyone Eve comes across in the outback is borderline psychotic at best. It feels a tad forced, as though the writers were struggling to find ways to fill out six episodes and so they introduced a bunch of secondary "villains" as obstacles. Mick is the villain we're all watching this for, after all, and he's barely even in this one - a few scenes feel like they're wasting time.

On a positive note, Dustin Clare, Lucy Fry, and John Jarratt are all great in their roles. This show is a great example of how a strong cast can really knock a series up a notch. The writing leaves a little to be desired (mostly plot-related, not dialogue), but the acting, atmosphere, cinematography, and occasional bloody scenes keep it compelling. The cinematography and music work especially well together, and at times the show is almost hypnotic. While not perfect, Wolf Creek is definitely a better example of successfully keeping a horror franchise alive - something which fails more often than not nowadays.

A few conveniently placed characters

Ultimately it's the story that appears to be letting this down slightly as everything else works well. Our main antagonist Mick Taylor is barely seen in this episode yet each time the writers manage to come up with some side characters who also seem as nutty as a fruitcake. Sullivan is a key issue in this for me, as every time he manages to catch up with Eve he somehow incompetently lets her slip his grasp far to easily for a police detective.

Four episodes in I like the atmospheric tone especially with regards to score and cinematography, dually noted the distortion when Eve is bitten by the snake indicating she has blurred vision. I find the subplot to this particular episode just to be a filler and a little pointless with regards to moving the story forward. There seems to be a running theme here with characters delving into episodes without clear direction and abruptly coming to a halt as quickly as they entered.

This show mainly consists of characters on the run or in search of Mick Taylor, except Mick is slowly becoming less involved in my opinion which is a real shame as he makes Wolf Creek what it is in the first place.

Filler episode
repo13619 September 2023
What did we learn from this episode? How much did the story progress. Barely.

The writers are struggling and it shows. The episode is nothing more than a filler to try and make up the series.

I'm interested to see how they can get to the hoped-for showdown between Eve and Mick in the final episode without the next one being yet more filler. Let's face it, this could all have been done and dusted in three episodes let alone 6 of them.

The contrivances began as slightly annoying but now they've become almost the main plot device every time - so many coincidences occur that have been written in to progress the story yet actually treat the audience with contempt.
