Terrorism in France
The French title is "Engrenage, la France face au terrorisme." In the copy available in this country this has been incorrectly translated as "Democracy vs. Radical Islam." Engrenage means "gear" but a second meaning is "a compromise that is difficult to get out of."
The subject is the recent terrorists attacks in France, and several points of view are put forward. The first is that of the French authorities and the police, who view terrorism as communism was viewed in the USA during the McCarthy era. Terrorism is a sort of virus that you catch unawares from evil Moslem preachers (many of them foreigners), destroys your thinking faculties and can only be eradicated by liberal doses of the antidote (reeducation) by Government bureaucrats and Good Moslems. Of course, preventive measures must be taken, like massive infiltration of Moslem neighborhoods by police informers; if you are Moslem you are reported even if you grow a beard (not a joke).
In one funny scene the Good Moslems, all republicans in the French sense, sing La Marseillaise. Have you ever paid attention to the lyrics? Impure blood waters furrows, bloody banners are raised, ferocious enemies bellow like bulls and come to cut your girl's and your children's throat. Surely a great lesson in nonviolence.
Then we see a different side, mostly from lawyers and repentant terrorists. French Moslems live in ghettos, are daily exposed to violence and drugs, they are unable to get a good education and thus condemned for life to menial jobs or no jobs at all. They are humiliated on a daily basis by police and authorities. If detained, they are denied to right to remain silent (which implies harsh interrogations) and are kept in jail on vague charges for years (as a lawyer cynically states "it's cheaper than having them under surveillance"). Of course enterprising people from supportive families can escape this hell, improve themselves and be admitted in pale society (to a point) but this does not seem to happen too often.
Amazingly, France has tolerated thousands of French Moslems to go "fight the tyrant Assad". Not surprisingly, many of them joined Daesh in Syria and came back to France up to no good. The film gives many examples of the cooptation process by Daesh and its consequences. Of course, the hapless Hollande government supported all along terrorists against Assad both to please France's American masters and to gain a place at the table when Syria's spoils are distributed, a somewhat forlorn hope now. We also learn that financing of terrorism linked to countries like Saudi Arabia is to be gingerly treated, since France has business dealings with these countries.
Excellent documentary. It presents the facts, leaves the interpretation to you.
