No one sang lonely songs like Roy Orbison according to Bruce Springsteen. According to my mum Roy Orbison had a sweet voice that could reach some high almost operatic notes.

When Roy Orbison died he went out on a high. He had just released a new hit album produced by Jeff Lynne and he had participated in the supergroup, The Travelling Wilburys.

This programme is a run through his life from the beginnings with Sam Phillips at Sun Records to his early hits in the US charts and his enduring popularity in Europe especially Britain where he toured constantly. Orbison's life was mired in tragedy. His first marriage collapsed and two of his children and former wife died in a house fire.

Roy rebuilt his life with his new wife from Germany and children from that marriage. In later years emerging stars covered his songs and cited him an a huge influence.

This programme has contributors form early band members, collaborators and friends as well as his children. We also hear the story from his voice albeit through another actor.

If you are an Orbison fan then this is worthwhile viewing.
