Reliably one of the most euphoric and rewarding events on the circuit, the New York Asian Film Festival emerged at a time when hardcore cinephiles were forced to import prohibitively expensive foreign-region DVDs if they wanted to watch the latest hits from the other side of the world, and the first editions of the fest — then hosted at the Anthology Film Archives — got a major boost by screening hard-to-find cult objects and/or future classics at a time when Chinese, Japanese, and South Korean cinema were all on the rise to one degree or another.
No disrespect to the prestigious New York Film Festival, but Nyaff beat them to the punch when it comes to major auteurs like Park Chan-wook, whose “Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance” screened at the 2002 event alongside millennial breakouts like Corey Yuen’s “So Close,” unheralded pop masterpieces like Fumihiko Sori’s “Ping Pong,” and what the fuck did I just witness?...

Canada contends this year with “Antigone” for its eighth Oscar nomination in the Best International Feature category, which has been renamed from Best Foreign Language Film. Canada was a staple of the race until recently, making the shortlist seven out of 10 times from 2003 to 2012. This included the country’s first and only win, for 2003’s “The Barbarian Invasions” by Denys Arcand, as well as three consecutive nominations from 2010 to 2012. Canada has been snubbed the last six years, only making the shortlist for 2016’s “It’s Only the End of the World,” which had won the Grand Prix runner-up award at the Cannes Film Festival for director Xavier Dolan.
“Antigone” is shaping up to be Canada’s most-acclaimed submission in years. Its premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival yielded the People’s Choice Award for Best Canadian Film and the film has 91% approval from critics on Rotten Tomatoes, the best rating...

Updated: Apple will not be proceeding with its planned eight-episode drama series Bastards, starring Richard Gere based on the Israeli format Nevelot. The project, from Howard Gordon and Warren Leight, hails from Fox 21 Television Studios, Gordon’s 20th TV-based Teakwood Lane Productions and Keshet Studios.
I hear the decision was made several months ago, and Fox 21 had shopped the project to other networks.
The series, about two Army vets going on a killing spree to avenge the death of a loved one, had been an outlier at Apple from the get-go, considered darker in tone and edgier in subject matter than most of the rest of the streamer’s slate.
For a couple of years now, there had been talk about Apple’s family-oriented global brand and how its original scripted programming foray would fit into it. Disney had been open about only putting family-friendly fare on Disney+.

Director Jon Favreau has assembled quite an incredible cast of actors for Disney's realistic CGI animated remake of The Lion King. Most of the actors on the list we've already known about, but the one big confirmation is that Beyonce will officially be providing the voice of Nala. Here's the synopsis that was released:
From Disney Live Action, director Jon Favreau’s all-new “The Lion King” journeys to the African savanna where a future king is born. Simba idolizes his father, King Mufasa, and takes to heart his own royal destiny. But not everyone in the kingdom celebrates the new cub’s arrival. Scar, Mufasa’s brother—and former heir to the throne—has plans of his own. The battle for Pride Rock is ravaged with betrayal, tragedy and drama, ultimately resulting in Simba’s exile. Disney has made it official! Here is the cast and the release date for Jon Favreau's upcoming live-action version of The Lion King!
Disney ended the day the only way they know how, with a bombshell. That bombshell comes in the form of the long-awaited release date for Jon Favreau's Live-Action adaptation of The Lion King. Citizens of the United States and Disney fans across the country will see Simba's journey on the big screen on July 19, 2019.
Unfortunately, that's a bit longer than most of us would like, but if it's anything like Favreau's last Disney film, the wait will be well worth it. Favreau's last film was a little diddy called The Jungle Book, which amassed over $966 million. It's understood that The Lion King will follow in that same vein, in terms of production. Also following what made The Jungle Book great was an all-star cast of voices.

Patrika Darbo wasn’t paid a dime to star in the web series “Acting Dead.” But that gamble paid off – with an Emmy win this weekend.
“Nobody got paid, we all worked deferred,” Darbo told IndieWire on Monday, a day after winning for outstanding actress in a short form comedy or drama. (Deferred payment refers to when an actor works for free until the project makes money.) “So I really got paid very well with my Emmy last night.”
The victory was sweet for Darbo, who had previously been nominated for a Daytime Emmy in 2000 (as Dr. Nancy Wesley in “Days Of Our Lives”). But it was also a big win for independent creators, as the Television Academy’s expanded short form categories opened the door toward recognizing small-time productions outside of the usual studio and network system.
“Acting Dead” is a smart and zany satire written and produced by accomplished voiceover actor Brian Beacock.
