Pinewood is pulling out of its studio in Wales, the company’s latest exit from ventures in various locations around the world as it rejiggers its international strategy.
Pinewood said Tuesday that, following discussions with the Welsh government, it had decided to end its agreement to operate, manage and market the studio in Cardiff, the Welsh capital, where productions such as hit show “Sherlock” have been shot. The agreement will expire March 31, 2020.
The announcement comes after the company said over the summer that it was pulling out of studios in Malaysia and Atlanta. It is concentrating instead on its expansion in and around London, where Disney signed a long-term deal last month to occupy most of historic Pinewood Studios and Netflix is setting up a production hub at Shepperton Studios.

The “winners” of the 39th annual Razzies have been announced, and “Holmes & Watson” has the dubious honor of being named Worst Picture. Director Etan Cohen was also singled out for his work on the critically panned comedy, as was Worst Supporting Actor winner John C. Reilly; co-star Will Ferrell escaped the same fate, as Donald Trump (as himself in “Death of a Nation” and “Fahrenheit 11/9”) is the year’s Worst Actor.

The 2019 Golden Raspberry Awards were announced right before the stroke of midnight on Friday night, February 22. These 39th annual awards, “honoring” the worst achievements in film, were decided by more than 1,000 eligible voting members across all 50 states and two dozen foreign countries, while the Razzie Redeemer Award was chosen by registered users right here at Gold Derby. So who were the big winners — or losers, if you will? Watch the complete Razzies announcement video above, and scroll down to see the complete list of nominees and winners below.
Will Ferrell and John C. Reilly have teamed up on comedy projects before, including “Talladega Nights” (2006) and “Step Brothers” (2008), but their December 25 release “Holmes and Watson” turned out to be coal in moviegoers’ Christmas stockings. With the Academy Award nominations being announced tomorrow, here’s something a little lighter as a momentary distraction. The Golden Raspberry Awards, also known as the Razzies, have announced their annual nominees. This “worst of” nominations list attempts to shine a light on the films and performances that were the opposite of high quality in a given year. For 2018, they’re at it again, with a new political wrinkle. This isn’t something to pay much attention to, but on the eve of the Oscars nominations, something silly like this is a change of pace, at least. Consider it an appetizer of sorts before the main course in the morning. This year, the Razzies were led by Gotti, which was “honored” with six nominations. Also taking in a half dozen nods was The Happytime Murders. In the top category of Worst Picture, those two movies were joined by Holmes and Watson,...

If their dismal reviews wasn’t punishment enough, for the 39th year, the Razzie Awards seek to recognize the achievements of the worst movies of the year. And for 2019’s crop of nominees, John Travolta’s “Gotti” and Will Ferrell and John C. Reilly’s “Holmes & Watson” both received the “honor” of being nominated for Worst Picture of 2018.
Melissa McCarthy might be nominated for an Oscar on Tuesday morning, but on Monday morning, she scored a nomination for Worst Actress for both “The Happytime Murders” and “Life of the Party,” and the former also landed among the five Worst Picture nominees. The box office bomb “Robin Hood” and Helen Mirren’s “Winchester” rounded out the nominees.

Raven Capital Management, which had offered a stalking-horse bid of $87.5 million for Open Road last month, will take control of the company after no other bidders emerged in the company’s bankruptcy proceeding.

Open Road, the latest independent film company to hit the rocks, has received a “stalking-horse” bid of $87.5 million in Delaware bankruptcy court from a buyer identified as “Or Acquisition Co.”
According to court documents, the bid is backed by New York-based private equity firm Raven Capital Management. The firm’s principal, James Masciello, already has some involvement in the film industry. Raven provides financing for Sculptor Media and Masciello is among the producers of its thriller, The Importance of Blood, which was announced over the summer.

Nashville is making a major play for film and TV scoring work that, for economic and political reasons, has typically been going overseas. New legislation in Tennessee, which took effect July 1, is designed to attract that work, and some say it’s already having an impact.
When it comes to music for major studio films, most composers’ first choice is to record in Los Angeles and London. In its second week of release, Solo: A Star Wars Story managed to take in $29.3 million to remain on top of the weekend box office. This gives the film an impressive two-week total of $148.9 million. And, as it did last week, Deadpool 2 finished in second place, though this time the margin wasn’t nearly as drastic as the Marvel sequel took in $23.3 million (just $6 million behind its Star Wars competition).
Debuting in the third spot of this week’s top ten is the survival tale Adrift, starring Shailene Woodley and Sam Claflin, which earned $11.5 million in its first weekend of release. Adrift thus nudges Avengers: Infinity War—which added $10.4 million to raise its six-week total to $642.9 million—to fourth place. Incidentally, we suspect the studio isn’t sweating the slight dip in this week’s ranking given the film’s overall performance.

Dog is a man’s best – or so they say. Show Dogs is the latest canine outing from Beverly Hills Chihuahua and Scooby-Doo director Raja Gosnell that ought to have some pedigree to it by now. Added to which, we just can’t get enough of cute animals showing us humans up on film.
The plot is predictable: Max is a non-nonsense Rottweiler police dog (voiced by Ludacris) paired with a human cop partner called Frank (Will Arnett) to solve the mystery of a missing panda. This leads them to go undercover at a prestigious dog show in Las Vegas. They (naturally) don’t hit it off to begin with but warm to each other in the end. Oh and there are lots of other doggie personalities accompanying them along the way, including a papillon called Philippe (voiced by Stanley Tucci), a camp former show champion with a liking for human pampering and beds.

Star Wars spin-off spirals into trouble to bring Disney’s release strategy into question while Show Dogs’ canines lack bite
Debuting with £4.85m for the weekend period at UK cinemas and £6.06m including its opening day last Thursday, Solo: A Star Wars Story represents a big commercial stumble for Lucasfilm. Disney must now be questioning its May release date strategy for Solo, following the successful December launch of consecutive Star Wars films in 2015, 2016 and 2017. And while Disney’s Marvel successfully releases two or more films a year within its cinematic universe, the strategy of presenting four Star Wars films within a 30-month period must now be questioned. Are these films too similar for that level of frequency?...

Despite finishing atop the Memorial Day weekend box office, the latest entry to the “Star Wars” canon from Disney and Lucasfilm, Solo: A Star Wars Story, failed to break the $100 million plateau, managing just $83.3 million. Albeit, this was still around double what second-place finisher Deadpool 2 brought in with $42.7 million. All in all, it must be considered a disappointing opening given the lofty expectations for the film.
With its second-place finish, Deadpool 2 brought its two-week total up to $207.4 million. Third-place finisher Avengers: Infinity War took in $16.5 million to give it an astounding five-week total of $621.7 million. Max and Will Arnett in Show Dogs Photo: Global Road Entertainment
Studio Global Road Entertainment have announced they are re-cutting their family film Show Dogs - released today in its uncut form in the UK and Ireland - for the Us market after American parents and campaigners including the Us National Center on Sexual Exploitation claimed the film might inadvertently suggest to children they should suffer abuse in silence.
The concerns focus on two scenes in which police dog Max (voiced by Ludacris) has his genitals felt by his human partner (Will Arnett) in preparation for going undercover at a dog show. Although the scene is played for laughs, it has caused an outcry in the Us.
Global Road have now said they will be cutting the scenes “that some have deemed not appropriate for children”.

This tale of talking mutts, voiced by minor celebrities, is a mirthlessly cynical cinematic chew toy
Should you require further evidence of western cultural decadence, consider the staggering hours moviemakers have logged filming dogs doing things dogs aren’t generally inclined to do: playing competitive sports, seeking Simon Cowell’s approval (Pudsey), rolling over for second billing behind long-eclipsed humanoid stars. Show Dogs hails from that good-cop-dog-cop line that once begat Turner and Hooch and K-9 – but its Usp is that the mutts now bark back with (minor) celebrity voices. If your actual dog were this lame, you’d be making ominous arrangements with the vet, not hustling everybody towards the cinema.

Honestly, we’ve tried our best to avoid talking about Will Arnett’s latest film, “Show Dogs.” The movie looks god awful and the premise is stupidly bonkers. Overall, it just seems like the type of movie we can somehow erase from our memories and pretend it never existed. Well, regardless of our thoughts on the film, families paid their hard-earned money this past weekend on “Show Dogs,” and some left horrified – and surprisingly not by the quality of the film.

Us cinemas will show a version of the family comedy without scenes in which a dog is coached into tolerating genital inspection
The studio behind new family comedy Show Dogs has agreed to a last-minute edit in response to lobbying groups and bloggers concerned that the film might suggest to children that sexual molestation is something that should be silently endured.
On Thursday, Global Road Entertainment confirmed they would be cutting two scenes “that some have deemed not appropriate for children”. The scenes in question are thought to involve Max, a police rottweiler voiced by Ludacris, who has his genitals groped by cop Will Arnett as part of his training to go undercover at dog shows. Initially, Max is upset by the intrusion, but is instructed to “go to a zen place” – which involves dancing happily among stars with Arnett – in order to try to ignore what is happening.

Rottweiler groping in family comedy normalises ‘unwanted genital touching to its child audience’, according to Us’s National Center on Sexual Exploitation
Show Dogs, a new family comedy about a police hound who goes undercover to infiltrate a dog show, has come in for criticism over a scene which some feel sends a troubling message to impressionable audiences.
In a statement on Tuesday, the National Center on Sexual Exploitation (Ncose) says a scene in which Max (voiced by the actor-rapper Ludacris) is instructed to put his discomfort over genital groping to one side and instead “go to a zen place” sends “a troubling message that grooms children for sexual abuse”.

Updated (May 23): Cineplex Australia has dropped “Show Dogs” from its theaters, and the Ncose is calling on America’s two largest theater chains, AMC and Regal, to pull the film as well. In a second statement, the group’s executive director said the movie contains “essentially a sextortion scenario” and “a textbook sexual abuser move — it would be impossible to calculate the number of times sexual abusers coerce minors into various sexual activities (everything from sending nude pictures to sex trafficking them) by using the threat of something bad happening to someone else if they don’t comply.”
The National Center on Sexual Exploitation has scolded Will Arnett’s latest film, the PG-rated “Show Dogs,” as potentially dangerous viewing for kids. While the May 18 release sounds innocent, if a bit perplexing — a police dog (voiced by Chris “Ludacris” Bridges) infiltrates a Vegas canine competition to save a stolen panda...

Internationally, the film brought in an estimated $176.3 million, giving it a worldwide debut of over $300 million.
Disney and Marvel’s Avengers: Infinity War finished in a distant second place with $28.7 million. Still, that was good enough to push the film’s four-week domestic total to $595 million. The film also amassed another $84.4 million internationally to up its global total to $1.81 billion, making it the fourth largest global release of all time, behind just Avatar (2009) and Titanic (1997).
Book Club, starring Diane Keaton, Jane Fonda, Candice Bergen, and Mary Steenburgen brought in $12.5 million its opening weekend in a shrewd example of counterprogramming. Melissa McCarthy’s Life of the Party finished in fourth place with $7.7 million falling dramatically from its $18.5 million showing in second place last week.

Is a $125-milllion opening weekend enough? Seems crazy to ask, but that’s what our Marvel-dominated world has come to. “Deadpool 2” had the third-biggest opening of 2018, and the third biggest opening for a Marvel film, after Disney’s “Black Panther” and “Avengers: Infinity War” (both over $200 million to start).
“Deadpool 2” opened to over $300 million worldwide, and had a lower budget than many Marvel titles, so this should be a profitable title and then some. But it also shows the first signs of possible Marvel weariness, if only because the gross came in a little under expectations.
The low range of pre-opening estimates was $130 million, with $150 million commonplace. Judging a film by predictions is not totally fair, but at this point Marvel films are expected to shock and awe. Still, it’s a soft debut.
Why? Gross-depressing factors might include comedic sequels, the R rating films, and the absent surprise factor.

Even though Deadpool 2 didn't deliver a record opening domestically for an R-rated movie it still captured a few record of its own as well as delivered a couple studio records en route to an impressive $301.3 million worldwide debut. Meanwhile Avengers: Infinity War continued it's impressive run becoming the fourth largest global release of all-time while Paramount's Book Club and Global Road's Show Dogs delivered on expectations in their attempts at counter-programming against the pair of superhero features. Early indications were that Deadpool 2 would deliver a record opening for an R-rated film after bringing in a pair of R-rated records with $18.6 million from Thursday previews and a $53.3 million opening day. However, it wasn't able to maintain that momentum, finishing with a still impressive $125 million estimate for the three-day, which is enough to become the second largest R-rated opening ever behind the original's $132.4 million debut two years ago and...
