Exclusive: Paris-based WTFilms has acquired international sales rights for thriller Hood Witch, the debut film of rising French director Saïd Belktibia, starring Golshifteh Farahani and Denis Lavant.
Iranian-French actress and activist Farahani (Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No) plays a woman who makes a living smuggling exotic animals and illicit products.
She branches out with the creation of a mobile App that connects clients with mystical marabout healers, but when a user’s consultation takes a tragic turn she finds her facing a violent backlash that could cost her and her son their lives.
The thriller is produced by Iconoclast and Les Misérables director Lady Ly’s Lyly Films.
Iconoclast’s recent credits include Romain Gavras’s Netflix original Athena, which debuted in Venice last year. The company is in Cannes this year as a producer on the Midnight Screening title The King Of Algiers.

It is good to see our friends at the Horrorant Film festival in Greece back in the game. The festival took the previous two years off because of the global health crisis. They also showed a grim determination to show movies on the big screen, never digitally, so moving to a virtual platform was never an option for them. So here we are, two years later, four nights longer than previous years, a newly renovated theatre, twenty-five feature films, thirty-seven short films, all raring to go in Athens, Greece. Horrorant will take place one week from tonight, May 5th, and run through to the 15th. The festival will open with Peter Bergendy’s Post Mortem and close with Mathiey Turi’s Meandre. In between attendees...

“Sketchbook,” Disney’s six-part documentary series devoted to the art of hand-drawn animation (streaming April 27 on Disney+), arrives as the studio embarks on the welcome return of traditional 2D — just ahead of its 100th anniversary in 2023. Produced by the team behind “Chef’s Table” and Walt Disney Animation Studios (via executive producer Amy Astley), the series provides an intimate look at six Disney artists and their distinctive talents and passions as they draw favorite iconic characters. It’s more than instructional — it’s a journey into their styles and personalities and overcoming personal obstacles. Story artist Gabby Capili (“Encanto”) draws Kuzco from “The Emperor’s New Groove,” 2D animator-director Eric Goldberg draws The Genie from “Aladdin,” 2D animator Mark Henn draws Simba from “The Lion King,” visual development artist Jin Kim draws Captain Hook from “Peter Pan,” supervising animator Hyun Min Lee draws Olaf from “Frozen,” and story artist Samantha Vilfort...

“Short Circuit,” Disney’s experimental shorts program, returns August 4 on Disney+ with five new animated works about personal growth: “Crosswalk” concerns a pedestrian frustrated by a street light that won’t change; “Dinosaur Barbarian,” the program’s first 2D short, conjures a caveman superhero trying to clean up his act; “Going Home” explores a young adult repeatedly visiting his hometown; “No 2 to Kettering” follows a shy British girl who takes a dreary bus ride every morning; and “Songs to Sing in the Dark” offers a battle in a dark cave between two constantly evolving creatures.
“Each [director] had a personal connection to their short, and that was a great starting point,” said “Short Circuit” production manager Jennifer Newfield. “That gave them a clear direction and engagement with the story.”
Ryan Green (“Crosswalk”) imagined his ancestors urging him on instead of waiting for the light to change; Kim Hazel (“Dinosaur Barbarian”) channeled...

Of the claustrophobic thrillers inspired by the 1998 cult classic, “Cube,” “Meander” might just be the greatest and most realistic. That realism is part of what makes this movie work because, as directed by Mathieu Turi, the film gives the audience the feeling of being trapped in a tight and confined space. And that feeling is as thrillingly unpleasant as it is a sweaty-palmed nightmare.

Photo: 'Meander'/Gravitas Ventures Officially, the closest I've ever come to being buried alive is watching director Mathieu Turi's 'Meander'. A suffocating and claustrophobic experience, Turi’s new sci-fi horror is a puzzling narrative from start to finish, and is a story that presents as much of a cerebral challenge to the viewer as the many life-threatening obstacles that surround its ill-fated protagonist. At first, 'Meander' is almost uncomfortably familiar. It feels cut from the same cloth as 'Cube' and the 'Saw' franchise, except with less authentic texture and even wilder plots that attempt to dull all senses of logic. It wouldn’t be a proper summer movie season without an offering from the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), and after a delay of over a year, and two years since the last MCU film, Black Widow is hitting theaters. With potential to be the summer’s biggest film, it is also a test for the box office in the pandemic recovery era, just as F9: The Fast Saga was when it opened two weeks ago. A big Marvel blockbuster may be the push many need to return to theaters, though how the film performs compared to others in the series will help let us know where we stand.
Scarlett Johansson headlines in Black Widow, the first standalone film for the character who was introduced in Iron Man 2 in 2010. The film also stars Florence Pugh, David Harbour, O-t Fagbenle, William Hurt, Ray Winstone, and Rachel Weisz. Directed by Australian filmmaker Cate Shortland,...

French-made suspense thriller “The Pilot” will join the slate of Hong Kong-, Paris- and Los Angeles-based sales agent All Rights Entertainment at the upcoming film markets.
The story follows a drone pilot in Mali whose wife and daughter are kidnapped by terrorists. They will be executed if he doesn’t derail the capture by his team of the head of a jihadist network. Soon to wrap in Almeria, Spain, “The Pilot” will be ready for delivery by the end of this year and released in the first quarter of 2022.
The film is the latest example in the screenlife genre, in which everything the viewer sees happens on a computer screen, a smartphone or a tablet and the entire film plays out on screens. Other recent successful examples include “Searching,” “Unfriended” and “Profile.”

Raccoon survival and youthful curiosity clash in Disney’s latest 2D/CG hybrid short, “Far From the Tree,” premiering Tuesday at the hybrid 2021 Annecy Animation festival, and screening theatrically in front of Lin-Manuel Miranda’s animated musical, “Encanto,” on November 24. But, for director Natalie Nourigat (the Short Circuit “Exchange Student” on Disney+), her short obviously went much deeper than celebrating childhood memories growing up in Oregon, and family visits to the cold and misty Canon Beach.
In “Far From the Tree,” curiosity gets the better of a young raccoon, whose frustrated parent attempts to keep them both safe from roaming coyotes on their idyllic beach in the Pacific Northwest. “I needed a conflict, the realization that you’re being an over-protective parent,” said Nourigat. “Where’s that line between I need to keep you safe and prepare you for what’s out there and letting you enjoy being a kid...
