Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga Box Office (Worldwide): Debut Weekend Collection Update, Earned Significantly Less Than Mad Max: Fury Road(Photo Credit –IMDb)
Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga has underperformed at the box office, and the actual numbers are here. George Miller directed the film, which features Anya Taylor Joy and Chris Hemsworth as the lead actors. It is both a prequel and a Mad Max: Fury Road spin-off. Keep scrolling for more.
It was a long weekend; the movie got an extra holiday due to Memorial Day. It clashed with The Garfield Movie at the box office, and it was a close fight between the two films for the #1 spot. The post-apocalyptic might be praised, but it is still insufficient as the film’s debut global collection is significantly less than 2015’s Mad Max: Fury Road. Charlize Theron and Tom Hardy led it, and the latest...

It’s been only four days since a controversial animated film The Garfield Movie starring Chris Pratt (or rather his voice) got its theatrical release, and its opening weekend results are driving everyone insane, mostly due to a big misunderstanding.
The movie was indeed very lucky to be released ahead of the 4-day-long Memorial Day Weekend and according to the most recent data, has already grossed around $91 million worldwide, which is so far a much better result than any other big film of this year showed.
What Is The Garfield Movie About?
Based on Jim Davis’ comic book character, lazy and grumpy cat Garfield, The Garfield Movie follows the same feline who this time gets a chance to reunite with his long-lost father, Vic.
Unlike his son who is living his best life surrounded by his owner’s love and everything he could ever wish for, including his favorite meal of all times lasagna,...

Memorial Day is usually one of the biggest and best weekends at the box office, but the warped year that is 2024 at the box office continued with neither of the new wide releases blowing up. Read on for the weekend box office report.
Going into the weekend, George Miller‘s prequel, “Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga” had scored impressive reviews after its Cannes Film Festival debut with 89% on Rotten Tomatoes, and Warner Bros. had the film’s stars, Anya Taylor-Joy and Chris Hemsworth, just about everywhere promoting the movie. It ended up making $3.5 million from Thursday previews beginning at 3pm, which was less than the $3.7 previews for “Mad Max: Fury Road” back in 2015. It ended up making $10.2 million on Friday, including those previews, which was not a good sign it might reach the $40 million plus projected in advance. Instead, it ended up with $26.3 million over the three-day weekend and an estimated $32 million including Monday.

Henry Cavill’s Argylle suffered tremendously not only at the box office but also in the critic reviews. The spy thriller film helmed by Kingsman director Matthew Vaughn led a promising introduction with its star-studded cast, but even with the tandem of The Witcher star and John Cena, the movie still flopped.

Meanwhile, the animated adventure comedy film The Garfield Movie is making waves on its weekend premiere. The beloved cat is definitely attracting viewers out of pure nostalgia, and funnily enough, its box office debut earned higher than Argylle’s worldwide gross!
The Garfield Movie Director Reveals Why The Character Remains Timeless
Director Mark Dindal talked about the inspiration behind creating The Garfield Movie and why it remains a popular figure throughout the decades. He told Animation Scoop:
There’s a universal quality to him, which there has to be because he’s been around for 45+ years.

The legendary orange tabby gets a 2D-looking makeover for “The Garfield Movie,” the fully animated origin story (voiced by Chris Pratt). That’s in stark contrast to Garfield’s hyper-real look in the previous live-action/animated hybrid movies (voiced by Bill Murray).
In the reboot, the lasagna-loving Garfield is abandoned as a kitty by his scruffy street cat dad, Vic (Samuel L. Jackson). Then he forms a family with Jon Arbuckle (Nicholas Hoult) and pup Odie (Harvey Guillén) and is reunited with Vic for a dangerous adventure. This involves a revenge plot, a dairy heist, and a train chase finale featuring weaponized Italian food, as well as flat camera work evoking the comic strip format.
Director Mark Dindal (“The Emperor’s New Groove”) was game for an origin story with untapped vulnerability, and selected Pratt after watching the actor profess his love of snack food and laziness.

Update: Comscore has just released the official box office results for the 4-day Memorial Day holiday weekend, and despite some box office pundits predicting that The Garfield Movie would top Furiosa, in the end the George Miller epic was able to hold on to a narrow lead. Comscore has Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga earning $32 million compared to Garfield‘s $31.1 million. However, it should be noted that The Garfield Movie only cost about a third of what Furiosa did, so it’s unlikely distributor Sony Pictures will chalk up a loss on this one.
Furiosa will depend heavily on foreign receipts if it’s going to break even, with the movie grossing $33 million internationally. Mad Max: Fury Road made a total of $379 million worldwide, a number that the prequel will likely have a hard time equalling unless word of mouth and repeat business are strong. The silver lining for...

Warner Bros.’ “Furiosa” pulled out to a narrow lead over Sony/Alcon/Dneg’s “The Garfield Movie,” though that is not much of a victory as the $32 million extended opening earned by the “Mad Max” prequel is part of the worst Memorial Day weekend box office results seen since the 1990s.
“Furiosa” scored the lowest total for a No. 1 Memorial Day film since “Casper” in 1995, while the overall estimated 4-day total of $128 million is a sharp 37% drop from last year’s Memorial Day weekend.
It’s a drop that can be attributed to an industry-wide slump as Hollywood and exhibitors weather weeks of reduced theatrical output due to delays caused by last year’s strikes, including Marvel Studios’ “Deadpool & Wolverine,” which has enjoyed exceptional presales but moved from May to late July and left theaters without their customary comic book film boost to kick off the summer.

Garfield has another reason to hate Mondays.
In a box office nail biter, “Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga” narrowly emerged victorious over “The Garfield Movie” on North American charts. On Sunday, Warner Bros. and Sony both claimed its own movie ranked No. 1 with roughly $25 million over the weekend and an estimated $31 million through the Memorial Day holiday on Monday.
With Monday’s estimates, “Furiosa” ended up generating $26.2 million over the weekend and $32 million for the four days. “Garfield” was shockingly close behind with $24 million over the weekend and $31.1 million over the four days.
No matter the final order, it’s the worst Memorial Day weekend in nearly three decades — excluding 2020 when theaters were entirely closed due to Covid. Box office comparisons to the same holiday weekend in 2023 are particularly tough — down by nearly 36% — given that Disney’s “The Little Mermaid” remake took the crown with $118 million, one of the best debuts for the holiday.

Inside Out 2 Box Office Expectations
Disney and Pixar’s much-awaited sequel brings viewers back to Riley’s mind, who is 13 years old now, where new anthropomorphized emotions take control to keep up with her teenage feelings. Having received a rapturous reception a week earlier in Cannes George Miller’s “Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga” grabbed a more muted win at the South Korean box office.
“Furiosa” opened with $3.35 million between Friday and Sunday, according to data from Kobis, the tracking service operated by the Korean Film Council (Kofic). That represented a 39.5% share of the weekend’s total cinema-going market.
The film opened in Korea on Wednesday and topped the daily chart for each of its five days on release. Its cumulative total at the end of its five-day opening period was a solid, but unremarkable, $4.38 million, earned from 564,000 admissions.
The weekend box office total weighed in at $8.48 million, which is close to the median so far this year.

Yet again, a new film sits atop the box-office weekend top ten as Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga managed to stave off fellow newcomer The Garfield Movie by a mere $0.7 million to take the top spot prior to the holiday.
In its first weekend of release, Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga brought in $25.5 million for Warner Bros., allowing it to finish just ahead of Sony Pictures Releasing’s second-place claimant, The Garfield Movie, which brought in $24.8 million during its debut weekend. Meanwhile, this pushed last weekend’s top film If to third place where it added $16.1 million for Paramount Pictures, bringing its two-week tally to $58.7 million. Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes dropped two spots as well, landing in fourth place this weekend with $13.4 million. This gives the 20th Century Studios film a three-week total of $122.8 million. This weekend, the box office looked more like a Wasteland than the fruitful Green Place of Many Mothers.
“Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga” underperformed in its box office debut with $25.6 million between Friday and Sunday and an estimated $31 million through Memorial Day on Monday. Instead of ruling the box office as expected, it’s in a shockingly close race for first place with Sony’s animated “The Garfield Movie,” which collected $24.8 million over the weekend and an estimated $31 million through the four days. The Memorial Day Weekend we’d all like to forget: Any claims to #1 are premature. “Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga” (Warner Bros.) and “The Garfield Movie” (Sony) are in a battle for #1 for the four-day holiday, but each only estimates around $25 million for Friday to Sunday. (“Furiosa” is ahead.)
This is a holiday release date often chosen for a film that’s expected to be among the top three of the year. Unadjusted, neither “Furiosa” nor “Garfield” would be among the top 50 openers historically for this particular weekend; adjusting to current ticket prices, not even the top 100.
Current estimates for the four-day weekend are $101 million, but the crisis lies in the whole month. May is supposed to kick off summer and it has failed. It confirms that post- “Barbie” and “Oppenheimer” box-office depression has no end in sight.

Updated: Warner Bros’ Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga was greeted with a very warm reception during its Cannes Film Festival world premiere in an early showcase last week, and amid much love for franchise architect George Miller. It has followed up with strong critical and social scores. Nevertheless, in this currently wonky theatrical landscape, the prequel underperformed in its global opening this launch weekend, grossing $58.9M from 76 total markets through Sunday.
That includes $33.3M from overseas play and $25.6M from domestic; the latter for its Friday-Sunday. We are waiting on confirmation of the four-day North American number given the domestic holiday on Monday.
Yes, we expected higher when we did our preview earlier this week, and perhaps the industry as a whole was praying too much at the feet of this origin story. It’s undeniably got some amazing action.

“Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga” is stalling at the international box office with $33.3 million from 75 territories. The fifth entry in director George Miller’s post-apocalyptic series has generated $58.9 million globally in its first weekend of release, a rough start given its $168 million production budget.
Domestically, the Warner Bros. prequel “Furiosa” is closely battling Sony’s animated “The Garfield Movie” for first place on box office charts, with each grossing roughly $25 million over the weekend and an estimated $31 million through Memorial Day on Monday. Whichever lands at No. 1, this ranks as one of the worst Memorial Day holiday weekends in decades.
“Furiosa,” at this rate, will struggle to live up to its predecessor, 2015’s “Mad Max: Fury Road.” That film, starring Tom Hardy and Charlize Theron, captured $380 million against a similarly big budget. If you'd expected Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga to race away from The Garfield Movie with ease at the U.S. box office this long Memorial Day weekend, guess again. According to Deadline (via SFFGazette.com), they're in a dead heat of $31 million over four days and $25 million over three days.
One will ultimately emerge with the win but, as we write this, it's simply too soon to tell.
Critics sunk their claws into The Garfield Movie, something that's evident from its 37% Rotten Tomatoes score. In contrast, Furiosa is "Certified Fresh" at 89%.
Unfortunately, no matter who wins, it appears theaters will once again lose. This is the lowest opening for a Memorial Day weekend in 29 years (when Casper opened with a mere $22 million in 1995).
Where did it go wrong? The trade believes Warner Bros. Discovery waited too long to start hyping Furiosa, with the last leg of the marketing campaign...

Imperator Furiosa has battled ruthless kidnappers, raider attacks and maniacal warlords as she traverses a lawless Wasteland. And yet her fiercest adversary, at least today, seems to be a lazy cat who loves lasagna.

Early Sunday Am Update: The 4-day fight between Warner Bros’ Furiosa and Alcon/Sony’s The Garfield Movie will drag out into Monday, both titles currently in a dead heat eyeing $31M over 4-days, $25M over 3 days.
There are those showing the 48-year old comic strip feline eating the one-armed desert renegade’s lunch with $31M to $30.96M, but it’s too close to call right now. In regards, to Garfield upsetting Furiosa, we told you this was in the cards.
Whether Garfield or Furiosa wins, it will be the lowest opening for a Memorial Day weekend No. 1 title in 29 years, the last being 1995’s Casper at $22M.
After beating Furiosa on Saturday, $8.3M to $8M, Garfield looks to have the edge over her on Sunday and Monday. Garfield is booked at 4,035 boosted by some Plfs. Furiosa is in play at 3,804 juiced by 400 Imax auditoriums, Dolby, 4Dx, D-box, etc.

The bad times at the summer box office just keep coming this weekend, as George Miller's post-apocalyptic road epic "Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga" lines up a historic low for the Memorial Day weekend. After grossing $10.2 million on its opening day (including previews), "Furiosa" is on track for a dismal $31 million four-day weekend (per The Wrap), significantly below the $45.4 million three-day debut of "Mad Max: Fury Road" in 2015. The good news is that "Furiosa" is in a close battle with "The Garfield Movie" for the No. 1 spot. That's the next "Mad Max" spin-off right there! (Jon Arbuckle's Wasteland name would be Jizzboy the Gronk.)
As I covered last week, when John Krasinski's fantasy film "If" opened to similar numbers, Hollywood is currently experiencing the fallout of last year's strikes. Production shutdowns and subsequent release date delays mean that this year's summer slate is short on guaranteed hits,...

On this week's episode of the Empire Podcast, the doctor is in. Doctor George Miller, that is, as the MD turned visionary director returns to the big screen with his latest slice of post-apocalyptic madness, Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga. So, naturally, our Chris Hewitt went along and had a big old chat with Dr. George, as we're reliably informed they call him in Australia, and we bring you the full version of that engrossing interview. [46:15-1:14:25 approx.)
Then, Chris is joined in the podbooth by Helen O'Hara, John Nugent, and James Dyer for a fun episode in which they review Furiosa, Jennifer Lopez' Atlas, Richard Linklater's Hit Man, and The Garfield Movie; discuss the week's movie news, including X-Men, Star Trek and Godzilla developments; and, in a spoilerific listener question section, talk about their favourite movie farewells (this episode is dedicated to Jürgen Norbert Klopp). The Memorial Day box office is no picnic this year
Based on Friday numbers, George Miller’s Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga or The Garfield Movie may only open to $31 million to $33 million from 4,035 theaters over the four-day holiday, the worst Memorial Day opener in 40 years, give or take.
The two films are in a closer-than-expected race, but most rival studios expect Warner Bros. to take the top spot with Furiosa ahead of Sony and Alcon’s Garfield movie. Neither film aced it with audiences, with each receiving a B+ CinemaScore. Furiosa grossed $10.2 million on Friday, versus $8.4 million for Garfield. That’s not a big gap considering the latter is a family film.
With no holdovers to contribute in a massive way to the Memorial Day picnic, overall revenue may only clock in at only $125 million, the lowest showing in more than two decades. That excludes 2020 and 2021, when the pandemic was still raging,...

The early box office results are in over at Deadline, and oh boy, are they dire or what? As of right now, George Miller’s Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga seems poised to win the weekend by a razor’s edge, with it on track for a three-day gross in the range of $27-28 million and about $31 million for the four-day Memorial Day weekend. The Garfield Movie is right behind with $24 million, with Deadline predicting that it could theoretically win the four-day weekend thanks to matinees on Monday. It is set to make $30-32 million over the holiday. We had predicted $40 million for Furiosa and $35 million for Garfield.
It has to be said, the box office take this Memorial Day weekend is an all-out disaster. How bad is it? Whichever movie wins, Furiosa or The Garfield Movie, the winner will have the lowest Memorial Day gross for a movie in...

It’s a bit of a wasteland out there for theaters this summer, as Memorial Day weekend is closing out a very underwhelming May on a down note. Warner Bros.’ “Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga” is projected to open well short of the industry’s prior estimates for a $40 million-plus bow over the four-day window. The high-budget action epic is practically neck-and-neck for first place over Sony’s animated adaptation “The Garfield Movie” on domestic charts.
The fireball “Mad Max” prequel sputtered to $10.2 million from 3,804 locations across Friday and preview screenings. It’s got Imax and other premium large-format auditoriums to bolster its ticket sales, too. It’s another tough underperformance this summer. The film’s 2015 predecessor “Mad Max: Fury Road” got to $16 million in its opening day. That movie also put together an impressive awards season run and got canonized by action genre fans. Even so, “Furiosa” seems unable...

The Garfield Movie has arrived in theaters ahead of Memorial Day to kick off the summer fun alongside Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga. The animated feature film stars the titular orange tabby cat in a coming-of-age story based on Jim Davis’ iconic cartoon strips and an adapted script from David Reunolds (Finding Nemo) based on an earlier draft from Paul Kaplan & Mark Torgove. Mark Dindal (Chicken Little) directs the creature feature.
With Chris Pratt bringing Garfield to life and Samuel L. Jackson voicing his streetwise and long-list father Vic, the film boasts quite an ensemble of voice actors that further contribute to Garfield’s adventure. Ted Lasso alumni Brett Goldstein and Hannah Waddingham lend their familiar vocals to the movie as do Saturday Night Live alumni Bowen Yang and Cecily Strong.

After a high-profile debut at the 2024 Cannes Film Festival, George Miller’s Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga has started off its North American box office run with $3.5 million in Thursday previews.
The prequel to Max Max: Fury Road hopes to win Memorial Day weekend with $40 million-$45 million for the four days but will have to battle a subdued moviegoing marketplace. So far, Furiosa is doing comparable business to Fury Road, which earned $3.7 million in previews on its way to a three-day gross of $45.4 million.
The new film sees Anya Taylor-Joy play Imperator Furiosa, a character made famous by Charlize Theron in Fury Road. Chris Hemsworth also stars.
The other big Memorial Day opener is Sony’s The Garfield Movie, which took in a solid $1.9 million, a solid start for a family film.
Garfield is tracking to open in the $30 million to $35 million range thanks to the demand for movies playing to younger kids.

Ready, steady, go! The Memorial Day Weekend box office is off to the races as George Miller’s highly-anticipated Mad Max prequel, Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga, barrels into cinemas. The visually splendiferous, high-octane action showcase hit the post-apocalyptic road with $3.5M in Thursday previews, adding a shot of nitrous to what is sure to be an exciting weekend at the movies.
The other big release of the holiday weekend, The Garfield Movie, gobbled up $1.9M in previews, coming in slightly higher than the Ryan Reynolds-led live-action comedy If ($1.7M). While Reynolds is typically a more attractive draw than the sardonic orange tabby Persian cat, the fully-animated presentation of The Garfield Movie could be more appealing to families looking to stay cool during the steamy afternoon hours.
For comparison’s sake, 2015’s Mad Max: Fury Road hit the wasteland with $3.7M in May 2015, opening in second place with a $45.4M debut.

Witness her: “Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga” is off to the races at the box office this holiday weekend.
Director George Miller’s R-rated prequel to “Mad Max: Fury Road” has made $3.5 million in previews so far. The Warner Bros. action film is expected to bring in $40 million to $45 million over the four-day Memorial Day weekend, roughly the same as what “Fury Road” made across three days in 2015.
“Fury Road,” which starred Tom Hardy as wasteland warrior Max Rockatansky and introduced Charlize Theron as the badass driver Imperator Furiosa, opened with $45.4 million after $3.7 million in Thursday previews.
“Furiosa” winds back the clock and stars Anya Taylor-Joy as a younger version of Theron’s character. It shows how she became a fearless sharpshooter working for the evil Immortan Joe and his War Boys, later seen in “Fury Road.” Chris Hemsworth also stars as Dementus, the leader of a pack of biker warriors.

"Let it roll!!" Sony Pictures has debuted a final official trailer for the funny Garfield movie, which is playing in theaters today. They're really hoping this will be a hit with a final marketing push! The Garfield Movie is directed by Mark Dindal, the animation filmmaker also behind The Emperor's New Groove and Chicken Little. The amusing plot has Garfield reuniting with his long-lost father, a scruffy street cat, then ending up involved in a high-stakes heist with him. Starring Chris Pratt as the voice of the sarcastic, lasagna-loving tabby, alongside the voices of Samuel L. Jackson as his father Vic, Nicholas Hoult, Cecily Strong, Hannah Waddingham, Brett Goldstein, Bowen Yang, and Ving Rhames. This new trailer doesn't feature much footage - it's only a clip playing over and over of Garfield with Odie on a robot vacuum going back and forth. That's it. With the "Let It Roll...

The year was predicted to look pretty bleak with a number of major tentpoles being delayed due to the dual union strikes from the Writers’ Guild and the Actors’ Guild from late last year. However, that isn’t to say that there aren’t still some big releases, as some films were still ready to go for the summer. The past few weeks have seen a steamy character drama with Challengers, an action comedy with two stars from last year’s Barbenheimer sensation with The Fall Guy, the powers of Ryan Reynolds and John Krasinski teaming up for a cutesy family film with If and a CGI-filled action epic from an established franchise with Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes. Two of the films from these past weeks have already been made available on digital platforms — Challengers and The Fall Guy.

An orange cat with a hunger for lasagna and a hatred of Mondays made a big impression with his first primetime special, Here Comes Garfield, more than four decades ago.
The lovably sarcastic feline, who returns to the big screen May 24 in Sony’s The Garfield Movie, was created by cartoonist Jim Davis.
Garfield’s self-titled comic strip — featuring the cat giving guff to owner Jon Arbuckle and blissfully oblivious canine nemesis Odie — landed national syndication in 1978, followed by his first book, 1980’s Garfield at Large, topping the New York Times best-seller list.
While working on Here Comes Garfield, Davis struggled to make the cat stand up and dance, but got some assistance from his hero, Peanuts creator Charles M. Schulz, who happened to be working in the same studio. “He started drawing over my drawing, saying, ‘The problem is, you’ve made Garfield’s feet too small,’ ” Davis once said in an interview.

Garfield — the lasagne-loving, Monday-hating, greedy, grumpy cat originating in Jim Davis’ long-running comic strip — is an awkward fit for a kids’ film. He’s a cynic forced to be a family-friendly goofball, a sarcastic hero being sold to an audience of under-tens with an undeveloped sense of sarcasm, a square pessimist peg in a round optimistic hole. It has been tried unsuccessfully before, in 2004’s Garfield: The Movie and its sequel — those films most notable for the fact that Bill Murray signed on to voice Garfield because he mistakenly (he claimed) thought one of the Coen brothers was behind it.
This latest attempt details how Garfield first met his human ‘pet’, Jon (Nicholas Hoult), and became estranged from his father Vic (Samuel L. Jackson), before the stubborn housecat finds himself on a madcap heist adventure. Whether or not you think this is an origin story that needs to be told...

No one could blame the box office for needing an imaginary friend right now. For the first time in more than a decade — excluding the worst period of the Covid-19 crisis — no movie opening during the first six months of the year has come close to hitting the $100 million mark in its domestic launch.
In 2023, for example, three films had accomplished this feat by the time Memorial Day rolled around, including The Super Mario Bros. Movie, which debuted to $146.3 million in April on its way to earning $1.36 billion worldwide. To date, the top opening of the year belongs to March tentpole Dune: Part Two, which started off with $82.5 million, followed by $80 million for Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire. In fact, it’s nearing the one-year anniversary of the last film to open to $100 million or more — Barbie, which sunnily smiled its way to a $162 million debut in the latter half of July.

When Ving Rhames goes from impossible missions to the squared circle for the upcoming boxing drama Uppercut, emotions will fly like so many shots to the breadbasket. Grindstone Entertainment is ringing the bell for the North American rights to Uppercut, which stars Rhames as a trainer who agrees to mold the mind and body of a new female fighter.
Uppercut marks German writer-director Torsten Ruether’s English-language debut for the adaptation of the filmmaker’s 2021 film Leberhaken. The original film’s star, Luiii, aka Luise Grossmann, a former professional pole vaulter-turned-actress, is Duking it out alongside Rhames in the upcoming sports drama. Joanna Cassidy and Jordan E. Cooper add more power to the project’s punch.
Uppercut takes place in New York City in 2014. The hard-hitting tale focuses on Toni (Luii) as she seeks wisdom from Elliott (Rhames), a former boxer turned gym owner in Bushwick. Reluctant to train her,...

Recently, I watched the trailer for Transformers One, the Cybertron-set sequel about the origins of Optimus Prime and Megatron. Every time I see that trailer attached to whatever movie, an unenthusiasm washes over. It’s mainly a byproduct of Chris Hemsworth and Brian Tyree Henry’s casting as pre-Adam’s-apple-dropped versions of their respective characters. And make no mistake, they did not change their voices at all for these roles.
It’s not just Transformers One that’s the butt of this phenomenon though. Nearly every animated movie emphasizes a celebrity voice cast as part of its marketing. How else can you explain the overexposure of Chris Pratt as this weekend’s Garfield and last year’s Super Mario? It’s even standard day practice now for the character poster to also feature an actor’s name above the animation design, a la “Zendaya is Meechee.” This exists, presumably, to lure adults into the theater.

It’s not always easy to find out which movies hit theaters each week, especially after the Hollywood strikes led to many release date changes. With the WGA and actors strikes resolved and summer blockbusters starting to roll in, May is filled with both big budget flicks and new indie releases.
Premiering May 24 is George Miller’s “Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga,” which tells the origin story of the wasteland warrior princess before her run-in with Mad Max starring Anya Taylor-Joy, Chris Hemsworth, Tom Burke and Alyla Browne. Also hitting theaters is family film “The Garfield Movie” and Richard Linklater’s “Hit Man,” which follows a straight-edge professor who discovers his calling as a fake assassin starring Glen Powell, Adria Arjona, Austin Amelio and Molly Bernard. Two films getting limited releases this week are Disney’s “The Beach Boys,” a documentary about the legendary surf-rock band, and “Solo,” a foreign...

We’re about to witness one of the most brutal battles in the entire Mad Max saga. Immortan Joe and Dementus were nothing compared to our heroine’s final and most deadly enemy: a chubby orange cat named Garfield. Indeed, we’re about to see one of the biggest and most unlikely box office battles of the summer. While most box office analysts believe audiences will choose Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga, George Miller’s epic prequel to Fury Road, as their Memorial Day movie of choice, family audiences heading out this holiday weekend may make The Garfield Movie a stronger-than-expected opponent.
I’m expecting Furiosa to make about $40 million this weekend, with Garfield in a close second place with $35 million. Why so low on Furiosa? I have a few reasons. For one thing, even if Fury Road is one of the greatest action films of all time, it...

For decades, Memorial Day weekend has traditionally been a hugely busy weekend at the box office, often offering the biggest of franchise sequels — or in this case, two potential franchise prequels? Read on for Gold Derby’s box office preview.
The Memorial Day bump that has helped so many franchise installments before will certainly be in play for George Miller‘s return to the post-apocalyptic world of Mad Max with “Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga,” a prequel that tells the earlier story of Charlize Theron‘s character from “Mad Max: Fury Road.” This one stars Anya Taylor-Joy as the title character, joined by Chris Hemsworth as a new antagonist called Dementus, as well a mix of new characters and ones that appeared in “Fury Road.”
Miller’s career as a filmmaker pretty much began back in 1980 with “Mad Max,” a cult action movie that introduced Mel Gibson to the world,...
