Joseph Kahn primarily works as a music video director, having collaborated with the likes of Taylor Swift, Backstreet Boys, Rob Zombie, Mariah Carey, Britney Spears, U2, Aerosmith, Lady Gaga, Kelly Clarkson, Eminem, Maroon 5, Shakira, and many more – but he has also made a few feature films over the years. He made his feature debut with the 2004 action comedy Torque, and has followed that up with the comedy Bodied and the horror film Detention – which we’ve covered for both Awfully Good and Best Horror Movie You Never Saw. Now, Variety reports that Kahn is making a creature feature called Ick, and Brandon Routh (Superman Returns) and Mena Suvari (American Beauty) have signed on to star in the film.
Ick is coming our way from Interstellar Entertainment and producer Steven Schneider. The film aims to “evoke the timeless creature features of the 1980s with an ambitious arsenal of scares and comedy.

And in Assimilate we see three friends making a web series about their town discover that their neighbours are being killed and replaced by creatures who are perfect copies of their victims. When the employees of Incredible Edibles, a comestible silverware start-up, get trapped in a cave during a team-building retreat, it doesn’t take long for these environmentalists to consider cannibalism. Patrick Brice’s “Corporate Animals” is a thin satire on the dog-eat-dog — make that man-eat-man — selfishness of modern capitalism, with a deliciously nasty lead performance by Demi Moore as Lucy, the hypocritical CEO. In the very funny commercial that opens the film, Lucy frames herself as the Earth Mother goddess of a company that she believes will save the planet, while touting her diverse workforce of women, Lgbtq individuals and people of color. But ask the employees of Incredible Edibles if they feel valued, and they’ll blurt something the FCC wouldn’t approve.

“Words are weapons in the world’s most brutal lyrical sport.” That’s from the promo description of Bodied, the first ever fiction feature film about battle rap. The surely common question, “What the hell is battle rap?” gets a bracing answer within minutes of the film’s opening. The “lyrical sport” consists of two (or sometimes teams of two) rappers, with no music to back them, competing against each other to see who can be more virtuosic with their threats and/or insults.Helmed by music video director Joseph Kahn, Bodied is a wild, jacked-up trip—disjunctive but somehow graceful. Kahn and his team jump across space, use slow- and fast-motion, push in on characters and switch perspectives with a mixture of finesse and aggression that’s entirely fitting for the story material. So much rap—and especially this kind of it—is about refined style applied to unrefined material,...

There’s a moment near the beginning of Bodied, Joseph Kahn’s brittle battering ram of a battle-rap comedy, where a character explains the difference between using lines and bars. You get off a handful of good lines when you’re facing an opponent in a freestyle battle, just two people in a ring armed with nothing but envious vocabularies and beaucoup insults … you can impress folks. They know you have some skills. But you come up with some kick-ass bars — what’s loosely categorized here as an interlocking, layered series of bap-bap-bap verbal jabs,...

I’m going to be trying something a little bit new today, as an experiment. For those of you who don’t know, I’m now a Rotten Tomatoes certified critic, so I want to attempt to give more of what I see a write up, in order for it to show up there. So, for a busy week like this, I decided to lump three films into one long post. It’s essentially a trio of slightly shorter articles in one shot. Perhaps it’ll be a recurring thing. We’ll see. For this inaugural attempt, the three movies that open this week are the satire Bodied, the family flick The Nutcracker and the Four Realms, and the long lost Orson Welles curiosity The Other Side of the Wind. Here goes nothing… — *Bodied* It’s incredibly satisfying to see a satire really go for broke. Too often, the razor is on the dull side.

YouTube has released a red-band trailer for for their Eminem-produced rap battle film called Bodied and it’s pretty damn entertaining. I also included a green-band trailer as well, but the red-band is the better one.
The film was directed by Joseph Khan (Torque) and it’s described as a “go-for-the-jugular, hilarious look inside the competitive world of rap battles.” Here’s the synopsis that was released:
Berkeley grad student Adam Merkin gets sucked into the game after meeting icon Behn Grym (Jackie Strong; Bet’s “Real Husbands of Hollywood”) and accidentally competing in—and winning—his first battle. Rising through the ranks of the battle scene with his provocative insults, Adam alienates his academic buddies, uptight girlfriend, and literary professor father (Anthony Michael Hall).
I think the movie looks great! I’ve always enjoyed the art of freestyle...

Neon and YouTube Originals have released the first official trailer for “Bodied,” the latest feature film from acclaimed music video director Joseph Kahn. The movie has been praised a cross between “Scott Pilgrim vs. the World” and “8 Mile,” and with Eminem as an executive producer, “Bodied” has the bona fides to earn the comparison. Kahn has directed music videos for a wide array of artists, from Lady Gaga to Taylor to Swift, to Snoop Dogg and 50 Cent. “Bodied” is Kahn’s third narrative feature; he is best known for 2011’s teen slasher comedy “Detention.”
Set in Oakland’s underground rap battle scene, “Bodied” features former Disney Channel star Calum Worthy as a progressive grad student who finds himself unexpectedly skilled at rhyming. “Bodied” also stars Jackie Long (“The Real Husbands of Hollywood”) and hip hop radio personality Charlamagne Tha God.

"You ready for this?" Neon + YouTube Premium have debuted a fantastic new official red band trailer for Joseph Kahn's film Bodied, a highly acclaimed, foul-mouthed, provocative film about a young, nerdy white kid who decides to join the rap battle scene. It's a very bold, outspoken satire about racism and the artistry in rapping, and how we need to open our eyes and gain more perspectives. Calum Worthy stars as Adam, with a cast including Anthony Michael Hall, Debra Wilson, Ryan Ochoa, Daffany McGaray Clark, Charlamagne tha God, Loaded Lux, Dizaster, Dumbfoundead, and Hollow Da Don. This comedy is produced by Eminem, with a script co-written by Toronto rapper Alex Larsen (aka Kid Twist). I saw this earlier in the year and it's awesome; an extra loud, totally hilarious, and impressive film. Check it out below. Here's the new red band trailer (+ official posters) for Joseph Kahn's Bodied, direct...

Whether you know it or not, you’ve probably seen at least one work from director Joseph Kahn, whose formidable track record of instantly recognizable music videos includes such Grammy-winning shorts as Eminem’s “Without Me” and Taylor Swift’s “Bad Blood.” And speaking of artists known for their public feuds, Kahn’s new film “Bodied” will have bad blood to spare as it immerses us in the verbal brutality of urban battle rap.

There have been plenty of movies featured at Frightfest that aren’t exactly ‘horror’ movies. They are featured for several reasons. Be it the director is more well known for genre movies or the movie is so good that it’s too good an opportunity to miss by not having it at the festival. With Joseph Khan’s Bodied, both of those reasons can apply. His previous film Detention was a comedy horror and ,as for the second part of my sentence, I’ll go into more details below but Bodied is a fantastic film!

It was the penultimate day of FrightFest and the incessant rain did nothing to deter horror fans and genre aficionados from swarming back to Leicester Square for a fourth helping of cinematic excess. Sunday witnessed the English Premiere of John McPhail’s all-singing, all-dancing zombie high school musical Anna and the Apocalypse, while the wonderful Issa Lopez returned for an encore screening of her excellent Tigers are not Afraid. The singular talents of Joseph Khan were championed with the UK Premiere of his incendiary battle rap odyssey Bodied, while Andy Nyman and Jeremy Dyson put the willies up us once again with a special event screening of their excellent horror anthology, Ghost Stories. But that was far from all… The Man Who Killed...

Bodied is the sort of film that would give Walt Disney a heart attack. It’s nasty, close-to-the-bone, doesn’t really have a genre (at a push you could probably argue that it’s an underdog comedy but in some ways it’s also kind of the opposite too) and worst of all, it’s about battle rap. Not the 8 Mile/Lose Yourself, drop-the-mic-style battle rap either. Even though, rather ironically, Eminem is listed as a producer, there’s nothing commercial about the rapping here at all. If James Corden tried to rip-off the bars these real-world artists were “spitting”, he’d end up in prison.
But the very fact that Bodied can’t be put in a box and easily sold is by far its strongest feature; Joseph Kahn’s self-funded, ludicrously ahead-of-itself third feature is an absolute treat on all fronts. A scathing satire on liberal self-shaming, contemporary racial and political stereotypes,...

This year’s FrightFest will kick off on 23rd August with Jenn Wexler’s post-modern slasher The Ranger (making her the first ever female director to open the festival) and close on 27th August with Gaspar Noé’s insane surprise Cannes-favourite Climax. And considering 2018’s London edition is backed by Arrow Video as the main sponsor, fans can expect even more top-shelf genre fun than ever before. Hold on to your butts.
The four horseman of the fest-pocalypse, Greg Day, Alan Jones, Paul McEvoy and Ian Rattray reunite again to take over the Cineworld Leicester Square and Prince Charles Cinema, marking FrightFest’s 19th year on the trot celebrating horror in London’s film centre. And the line-up is certainly a fan-pleaser, with over 60 premieres, plenty involving former festival favourites.

Eli Sisach’s deep-space sci-fi thriller “Atropa,” Rightor Doyle’s kinky “Bonding” and Frenchmen Edouard Salier’s U.S./Cuba “Cabeza Madre” – where an initially lampooned Cuba in many ways comes off the better – all figure in the inaugural Canneseries Digital, a showcase for the riches – artistic, financial – of a burgeoning entertainment form.
Compulsive viewing, and homaging an ‘80s “Aliens”-school of murky, industrial deep-space sci-fi, American Eli Sasich’s time-warp mystery “Atropa” has an Off-World officer reuniting with his estranged wife in an outer galaxy, as her space vessel collides with another version of itself.
A Studio + Original Series, “Cabeza Madre,” delivers a “Fargo”-oddball character comedy about an uptight American (Clifton Collins Jr.) facing off in Cuba with his decapitated mother’s apartment-block mob.

YouTube Red is taking a tentative step toward becoming more like Amazon Studios with the announcement of an in-house production that it says will see a theatrical release.
Directed by Iranian-American writer-director Maryam Keshavarz (“Circumstance”), “Vulture Club” stars Susan Sarandon as an ER nurse whose co-workers have no idea that her journalist son has been taken hostage by terrorists. The film also stars Julian Morris (“Pretty Little Liars”), Edie Falco, and Matt Bomer. Producers are J.C. Chandor, Anna Gerb, and Neal Dodson.
While YouTube Red announced that principal photography is complete, details on how it plans to release it in theaters are slim.
“We don’t have any news to report on a theatrical partner at this stage, a YouTube Red representative said. “Perhaps later once we identify a partner.”
This would represent a significant strategy shift for the streaming service. Last year, YouTube Red booked its own one-week runs...

YouTube, specifically YouTube Red, will be streaming the collaborative rap movie effort from Eminem and (featuring) Dr. Dre. When I was writing this article I asked myself who would be interested in reading it. I ventured on to Rotten Tomatoes and found that of the 100 or so people who actually saw the movie, 93% liked it. Film critics gave it the same number, so whether you are a fan of rap music or not, this film apparently has something to say to its audience. The 10-day-long Sundance Film Festival — the first major fest on every cinephile’s calendar — begins this afternoon in the Utah mountains. Last year’s slate produced current Oscar hopefuls “Call Me by Your Name,” “Get Out,” “Mudbound,” and “The Big Sick,” the latter being two of the biggest buys witnessed at the festival, garnering a respective $12.5 million from Netflix and $12 million from Amazon Studios.
Distributors are descending on Park City, Salt Lake City, and Sundance in search of their successors, hoping not to repeat last year’s blunder by Fox Searchlight, which paid $9.5 million for “Patti Cake$,” a film that reaped only $800,000 domestically.

For many moviegoers, only one film released in 2017 successfully confronted racial inequality under the guise of mainstream entertainment, and that was “Get Out.” But another movie that fell into that same category has yet to hit theaters. Joseph Kahn’s “Bodied,” an outrageous hip hop satire that screened in the Midnight Madness section of the Toronto International Film Festival, has yet to land a theatrical deal; nevertheless, it topped IndieWire’s annual critics poll as the best undistributed movie of 2017.
The riotous comedy, in which geeky, overeducated white grad student Adam (Calum Worthy) permeates Toronto’s underground rap battle scene, is a blatant provocation: A big part of the movie revolves around Adam’s realization that racial epithets and other seemingly offensive aspects of rap performance are key to his own success in the scene, and that participants regard such button-pushing lyrics as less problematic than his socially-progressive background had led him to believe.
