Warning: Spoilers
This was part of a series of the show that plays out like a pub quiz with questions about many famous facts from recorded history since the dawn of man, a surprisingly factual and as usual funny show to watch and have fun with. Hosted by Jimmy Carr, with celebrity panellists in three teams: Jonathan Ross and Bob Mortimer (One and a Half Condoms), Mel Giedroyc and Kristen Schaal (The Awesome Clams), and David Mitchell and Claudia Winkleman (David & Claudia). This quiz focused on all sorts of factual information from history, science, music, words and language, film and sport and games to answer about. These questions are asked as they are, with video and sound clips, with pictures (including Say What You See), and by celebrity and mystery guests on screen or in the studio, so it really does feel like a proper quiz that you can take part in. Events from history that were questioned and joked about, and mentioned (or pictured) included: Roman Emperor Caligula holding orgies and committing incest with his three sisters, Queen Elizabeth I quoting "I know I have the body of a weak and feeble woman; but I have the heart and stomach of a king", the Watergate scandal, a mosaic uncovered in the ruins of Pompeii after the volcanic eruption with the words "Beware of the Dog", Antarctic explorer Captain Laurence Oakes and his last words "I am just going outside and may be some time", aeroplane inventor brothers Orville and Wilbur Wright, toilet paper being "splinter free" in 1935, the life of Sigmund Freud, the Miss Atomic Bomb pageant, Elvis Presley being the biggest-selling solo artist of all time and his sexy hip gyrations, "YMCA" by Village People, backmasking (playing songs backwards apparently revealing Satanic messages) and "Stairway to Heaven" by Led Zeppelin being examined for it on Christian show Praise the Lord (apparently the song says "Here's to my sweet Satan"), "Gran Vals" by Spanish composer Francisco Tarrega which became the Nokia ringtone, "Ironic" by Alanis Morrisette, Craig David - Born to Do It, Madonna - Like a Virgin, Marilyn Manson - Mechanical Animals, the Rosetta Stone believed to be the key to understanding Egyptian hieroglyphics, the Bible being the bestselling book of all time, Oliver Cromwell and his phrase "warts and all", the opening of A Tale of Two Cities by Charles Dickens ("It was the best of times. It was the worst of times"), William Shakespeare and his euphemisms for orgasms, the proverb "A stitch in time saves nine", the names of champagne bottles (Nebuchadnezzar, Balthazar, Methuselah, Jeroboam and Magnum), superhero films being based on comic books, The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy and "42" (the answer to the ultimate question of life, the universe and everything), the former Czechoslovakia poster for Ghostbusters, the rules of Fight Club, famous movie masks (Frank the rabbit from Donnie Darko, Leatherface from The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, Hannibal Lecter from The Silence of the Lambs, Michael Myers from Halloween, the Pighead from Saw, and the Jason Voorhees hockey mask from Friday the 13th), Pelé regarded as the greatest Brazilian of all time, the boxing stance Southpaw, Alex Ferguson inventing the phrase "squeaky bum time", the board game Operation, and famous dances (Tango, Foxtrot, Charleston, Hand Jive, The Running Man, Macarena, "Big Fish, Little Fish, Cardboard Box", and Twerking). Other celebrity and special mystery guests in the show included the children of Mitchell Brook Primary School in Neasden who act out well known news stories, Jon Snow who reads news related to lyrics from songs of history and dances to it, Buzz Aldrin, Rylan Clark-Neal, Karen and Kevin Clifton who dance, Warwick Davis, Joey Essex describing a historical figure, David "the Haymaker" Haye, and Dragons' Den star Deborah Meaden. The jokes and the questions are what make this show so much fun, they chose the right celebrity panellists, and it also works as a funny way to find out and reflect on things you may or not know from history, a great comedy quiz show. Very good!
