Decent Idea but Horrible Execution

Children on the Titanic (2014)

* 1/2 (out of 4)

I'm sure everyone involved in this docu-drama had the greatest of intentions but there are a couple major flaws here that make the movie unbearable. The title of the film tells you all you need to know as we have actors playing children that were on the Titanic and we hear their stories of the excitement of getting on the ship, the fun on board and then of course the terror that was to follow.

The idea for the documentary is fine and on that level it's mildly entertaining. It's a bit too polished for its own good but there's no question that it's an interesting subject and we've got a few people like Andrew Lound and Stephen Guy who explain things about the history of the ship and the type of stuff that was on board. All of this is just fine but then there's the big error.

What kills this film and makes it unbearable is the horrendous music that is played as well as the even worst singing that the child actors do. These operatic screams and high-pitched voices are just like fingernails on a chalk board and it's so annoying that you slowly start to get angry and disconnected from the film. Even worse is that you've got to question why this decision was made because it just looks and sounds stupid and it takes away from the main focus of the film, which are the stories from the children.
