Durban — With world leaders arriving in Johannesburg this week, with an aim toward boosting trade ties and stimulating the economies of the five member states at the annual Brics summit, delegations from Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa gathered in Durban to highlight the countries’ cultural output at the 3rd annual Brics Film Festival.
Running parallel to the Durban Film Festival, the Brics festival opened Sunday night with a splashy ceremony featuring live performances and short films from each of the member states. Im Global has picked up international rights to Alibaba Pictures’ fantasy romance Once Upon A Time, co-directed by Anthony Molinara and Zhao Xiaoding.
Starring Liu Yifei (White Vengeance) and Yang Yang (I Belonged To You), the film is based on best-selling fantasy novel To The Sky Kingdom and is the first Alibaba Pictures title handled by Im Global.
Zhao is an Oscar-nominated DoP with credits including Zhang Yimou’s House Of Flying Daggers, The Flowers Of War and The Great Wall. Molinara is a VFX supervisor who won an Oscar for his work on Spider-Man 2.
Im Global has also picked up South Korean action thriller Real, directed by Love Lee and starring Kim Soo Hyun (The Thieves), Sung Dong II (The Accidental Detective), Lee Sung Min (A Violent Prosecutor) and Choi Jin Ri (Fashion King).

This weekend ultimately turned out very much as expected with Fox's Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children and Lionsgate's Deepwater Horizon debuting in the #1 and #2 spots respectively. Fellow new opener, Relativity's Masterminds, was unable to score in the double-digit millions in its debut and Disney's Queen of Katwe fell short in its expansion. Overall the weekend saw an uptick from last weekend, but was still down compared to last year with the top twelve generating an estimated $106.4 million compared to last year's $142.7 million, which was led by The Martian's $54.3 million debut. Finishing #1, Tim Burton's Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children delivered an estimated $28.5 million in its opening weekend from 3,522 theaters. The film received a "B+" CinemaScore and currently holds a so-so 64% on RottenTomatoes, both of which may have contributed to the film being unable to quite reach $30 million for its opening weekend.
