Ridiculous film
SteverB17 September 2018
I suspect another reviewer here is part of the cast or crew because there was nothing mesmerizing, riveting, or fascinating to see here. This was a vanity project for Drew Lint. That's the only thing that can explain this film. Even at 81 minutes, it's too long. The plot and direction is so disjointed, it's hard to know if it's intentional or just many, many continuity errors. I think the viewer is supposed to not know if you're watching reality or a dream. After awhile, it simply doesn't matter -- the dream/reality hook is used so many times, it's laughable. These characters have NO motivation for half the things they do and the ending just made me shake my head. Even the credit sequences are annoying. Watch if you want to, but I wouldn't recommend it.

M/M

Yikes, but this is all over the shop. For much of the film, I can safely say I had little, if any, idea what was going on. Who/what is real, or not? I have to say that I didn't really care after about ten minutes of this uniquely indulgent nonsense from auteur Andrew Lint. "Matthew" (Antoine Lahaie) takes a shine to cutie Nicolas Endlicher ("Matthias") at the swimming pool where he works. What follows is the dreariest of sexual cat and mouse games peppered with scenes that don't make sense; incoherent photography pretty much across the board (especially the sex) and a dialogue that is almost Neanderthal in nature. I'll admit I never do surreal particularly well, but this is really beyond the pale.

Pretentious, self-indulgent

I get what they were trying to do, but this failed. If the actors weren't so good looking, no one would watch it to the end, and that might be a good thing.

No waste your time watching this movie. If the plot is sex go for it. The rest not worst to see.

My eyes still hurt from watching this artsy fartsy showcase. My 2 star rating is generous due to some beefcake sightings, but oh my gay ghod way too long a disjointed treatise of dizzy imagery flashes to convey this disappointingly shallow sexual jealousy/ identity plot. You'll likely want a refund of your time.

an experiment
Kirpianuscus25 October 2020
It is an experimentl movie. This is its basic virtue and sin. It propose impressions, suggestions but not exactly a story. And the warning is clear from the first scenes - the border between reality and dream did not exist. So, it can become boring or bizarre or not to expect or simple pretext for see two good looking young men or to remind slices from O Fantasma. But, in my case, it is only a beautiful film about desire, obscure links, obsessions and loneliness, about relation mother - son and about the other becoming part from yourself, about youth and sensuality, fetishes and life in poetic nuances. Nothing extraordinary but , for a part of public, I suppose, interesting, maybe seductive. For cinematography, not the last.

Need more attention!

Warning: Spoilers
First, i have to said that i have a little disappointed, cause i thought this was a selcest film or something, but it not, however, this still not a boring film, maybe because i like to watch "intense" movies, i like to see "gazes", "distant look", "wet dreams", some "fantasy" thing like obsessed with s.o so much and becoming a spychopath later ... all of this things always make me so horny, anyway, this film has a good stalking vibes, good actors, nice chemistry (i really love the scene this guy walk in and just because he so lonely and confuse that he kiss this Matthew guy immediately, and they just being together like that, without any word!), i don't know why people hate this film, it not a bad filming at all, except some meaningless scene like the city, building, water, tree... it okay to let them in, but in this film, it too much, and so many long scene that unecessary, and so much picture that it look like a stop-motion one, but i still like this plot, and this film too, it clean, fresh and horny, this cp is so good, too bad they made it turn into a thriller movie :((((((

Try / Not Try

I've watched this movie, overall it's a bit sleepy but these actors were so wow, handsome and sexy. Antoine Lehaie looks like younger Ryan Philipe. it makes me thinking of some stuff between Bruce LaBruce, early-Almodovar and feels a bit like "O Fantasma (2000)". I'm not recommending you to watch it if you feel tired because it's just so so slow as some regular European movies from Film festivals.

Silence is a virtue
rbqld30 June 2019
Warning: Spoilers
Out of town gay goes to Berlin, weirdness ensues, the end. Canadian heads to Europe in search of something. A stranger moves in, intent on stealing your life. None are a fresh premise and this leaves M/M open to accusations of being passé.

Conversely, M/M does succeed by showing some personal aspects of being an expat. Also, the concept of an evil Canadian is just so out there.....

M/M is an almost silent movie. It relies on very good visuals and ambient sound to convey the point. In fact M/M can have no more than one page of dialog. That is about 99 less than a normal feature film. From a movie making perspective it's an interesting experiment that works well. For mainstream audiences, I'm less sure.

Canadian Matthew is Berlin's latest bourgeois expat off the boat. Expat arrivals in Berlin need to pick their tribe. To join a tribe one must fit in and 'ape' the others.

Matthew encounters the stunning Mathias and becomes obsessed. Mathias' image is everything Matthew aspires for. Matthew moulds into him, befriending his friends and joining his tribe. When you 'ape' someone, you challenge their territory. You become a better version of them than they are. When Mathias has an accident, Matthew moves into his sublet and deposes the hapless victim from his own life.

Expat urban isolation means he can do this and no one notices. Mathias lies in a coma with only his nurse to care for him. No family or friends visit. Despite his perfect image, Mathias turns out to be another lonely expat, searching for his place to belong.

M/M's second half borders on being weird for the sake being weird. Now out of his coma Mathias returns to find Matthew living his life. His reaction is perhaps surprising. Maybe Mathias has a touch of Stockholm Syndrome? Maybe Mathias wants a meaningful friendship? Maybe the it is weird for the sake of being weird?

If you like conceptual art house films, you'll love M/M. Otherwise, probably not.
