Janelle Monáe is truly in her Age of Pleasure. It’s been four months since her latest album arrived, and now, she’s back with a remix of one of the record’s standout tracks: “Champagne Shit.” Listen to the new version featuring Quavo and Latto below.
Built around the same upbeat arrangement as the original, the “Champagne Shit” remix is an ode to the good life. Monáe’s verses about throwing “tips” and “hips” set the tone, with Quavo coming in with references to the “ice” on his collar and “champagne” on his wrist, and lines like, “Bring some models and bring me more bottles.” Latto, meanwhile, delivers a hard-hitting, pleasure-seeking verse, with the closing line: “Trying go home to the D like a piston.” Stream the track below.
The Age of Pleasure debuted on June 9th and has been praised for embracing freedom, joy, and, of course, pleasure.

Indian editor, writer, director, cinematographer and producer Mahesh Narayanan is attached to the province of Kerala where he was born and raised. After a significant ammount of films he signed as editor, Narayanan made his directorial debut in 2017 with the critically acclaimed drama “Take Off” about the ordeal of Indian nurses in the city of Tikrit, Iraq in 2014. With his latest feature length film in the International competition of Locarno Film Festival, Narayanan is the first Indian director whose work is shown in this prestigious festival since 2005, which was more than a reason enough to meet him in Locarno to discuss his idea for a movie inspired by true events, the environment he chose to set the story in, the position of women in Indian society and his very deep connection to Kerala.

A bitter battle for justice is in the core of the story of Mahesh Narayanan’s feminist drama “Declaration” that runs for the prestigious Pardo D’Oro award in Locarno Film Festival’s international competition. This is the first Indian film in 17 years to be screened in the main competition, and only the 4th in the history of the festival in Malayalam language.
“Declaration” screened in Locarno Film Festival
The seasoned editor, writer, cinematographer and producer from Kerala, re-enters the international film landscape after his success with the directorial feature debut “Take Off” (2017) that won the Audience Award in Los Angeles. “Declaration” is the third feature he signs as the director and in which he – yet again – turns to the milieu of skill workers that seek their fortune outside of their (and his) birth province.
The place the movie is set into is as hostile to the outsiders as an average European country.

Acclaimed filmmaker Mahesh Narayanan and popular actor-producer Kunchacko Boban are re-teaming for “Ariyippu” (“Declaration”), the first Indian film in Locarno’s international competition in 17 years.
The Malayalam-language film follows Hareesh (Boban) and Reshmi (Divya Prabha), an immigrant couple from Kerala working in a medical gloves factory near Delhi, who aspire to go abroad for a better life. During the Covid-19 lockdowns, when an old video resurfaces among the factory workers, it opens up a Pandora’s box that threatens the couple’s jobs and marriage.
Narayanan got the germ of the film’s idea from a newspaper article about a female bank employee who had approached the Mumbai high court demanding a “declaration” clarifying that a video which had been circulated in her bank was a look alike and not her. That idea travelled with Narayanan for a while until he hit upon the premise about a migrant couple working in a gloves factory.

More importantly, the film does not show Iaf pilot Sreevidya Rajan from Kerala, who also served in the Kargil war with Gunjan. Sreevidya has, in fact, said that she was the first woman Iaf officer to fly in a combat zone and not Gunjan as the film suggests. Though the makers have said that the film is a fictionalised account, it has drawn sharp criticism for these departures. While Bollywood has made several biopics and films based on real life incidents, the southern industries are slowly catching up with the trend. Perhaps in future, south Indian...

CinemaIn the video, Parvathy speaks about the various characters she has done in her career of over 14 years. Tnm StaffGiving Parvathy Thiruvothu the script of the film Charlie, director Martin Prakkat told her not to ask him any questions. Parvathy, a self-confessed ‘unapologetic method actor’, is known for her intensive research of characters. She asked Martin helplessly, but why does Tessa go after Charlie (the two main characters in the film). Martin, a man of not many words, moved around two Bisleri water bottles in the room. He called the smaller 500 ml bottle Tessa and the bigger 1 litre bottle Charlie and explained in a single line, “500 ml wants to become 1 litre.” That was enough for Parvathy, she says, sharing the anecdote in a two hour video conference, curated by artistic director Smriti Kiran of Mumbai Academy of Moving Image (Mami). MollywoodThe Riz Test has five criteria for films which have Muslim characters. Neelima MenonThe Riz test, inspired from the Bechdel test and Riz Ahmed’s 2017 speech in the House of Commons on diversity on screen, talks about five criteria to measure how Muslims are portrayed in cinema and on TV. If the film/show stars at least one character who is identifiably Muslim then is the character: 1) Talking about, the victim of, or the perpetrator of terrorism? 2) Presented as irrationally angry 3) Presented as superstitious, culturally backward or anti-modern? 4) Presented as a threat to a western way of life? 5) If the character is male, is he presented as misogynistic? Or if female, is she presented as oppressed by her male counterparts? If the answer for any of the above is yes, then the film/ TV show fails the test. It is not that nobody in the Muslim community would answer to...

InterviewIn this interview, Priyadarshi opens up about the roles he'd like to do, how Telugu cinema treats women characters, and his personal life.Priyanka RichiMore than Priyadarshi Pullikonda, the memory of Kaushik from Pelli Choopulu still manages to leave his viewers in splits with his lucid humour in the film. Shuttling between locations to marrying the love of his life, this unassuming guy-next-door from Hyderabad’s Chandanagar says that a lot has changed in life after the phenomenal box-office success of Pelli Choopulu in 2016. Working on a handful of movies, Priyadarshi believes he is finally in the path of "renaissance" where he is playing roles that would not remind the audience of Kaushik anymore. Donning major roles in upcoming movies like Mithai and the Telugu remake of the Bollywood film 2 States, the actor says he is somewhere between being the guy-next-door and a funny "I-don’t-care" chap. “It’s an identity crisis I can't escape. But if you ask me what I prefer, I would liked to be called a character artiste who can pull off multiple characters. I am not just the funny guy Kaushik from Pelli Choopulu but also the terrorist in Satish Kasetty’s Terror,” Priyadarshi gently reminds. “Kaushik gave me the break I needed. It was a story everybody wanted to be told. But the monotony in doing such roles has set a typecast. I am exploring options that would keep me going in the world of a hundred other Kaushiks,” the actor adds. Still from Pelli Choopulu From Pelli Choopulu to Awe From Pelli Choopulu to Awe, the journey has been one of learning and unlearning, says Priyadarshi. If the former saw him as an easy-going young chap with a precise timing on humour, Awe had Priyadarshi playing the role of a chef, keeping company of two non-human living things: a tree and a fish. “Awe for me was a process of self-learning. I was surprised when I read the script. The whole idea of talking to non-human characters that would not respond to my dialogues in real life was unnerving. I hate monotony and Awe was exactly the push that brought me out of the niche I had created for myself with Pelli Choopulu,” Priyadarshi says. The selfish actor Talking about the growing popularity of Telugu movies outside the state, Priyadarshi says his characters have received love from multiple and unexpected quarters and that he is selfish enough to keep this love intact. “Tollywood has a wide, fragmented audience. Recently, when I went to Ahmedabad for the shooting of an upcoming movie starring Mahesh Babu, we saw crowds thronging the sets to get a glimpse of the star. I was surprised because such fandom comes simply from the dubbed versions of Telugu movies telecast in Hindi that cater to a mass audience. In that way, I am a selfish actor who would like to work on good scripts but at the same time cater to multiple sections of the audience.” Making statements through movies “I do not say movies should be preachy. If I am playing the role of a sexual harasser, it is up to the conscience of the audience to decide the morality of my character. I am only a performer that can show them the good and the bad,” says Priyadarshi. Having worked in films like Pelli Choopulu that had strong female lead characters like Chitra (played by Ritu Varma), Priyadarshi says he doesn’t believe in propagating stereotypes through movies. “Women characters in Telugu cinema are reduced to background props who would barely have a dialogue or two in the script. Many a times, we have requested the directors to give more screen time to women artistes with a stronger script. If women characters do not sync with the movie’s mood, it is difficult to act opposite them, delivering punch dialogues,” the actor says. Priyadarshi in his upcoming movie Mithai Not screen time, characters matter After the box-office success of Pelli Choopulu in 2016, the actor was seen playing the role of a Tamil refugee in Iraq, who is stuck in the Isis war, in the Malayalam movie Take Off. Talking about the very few minutes he spent on screen, Priyadarshi says he doesn't care about the screen time, but that good characters do matter. “I donned a different hat in Manasukha Machindi very similar to the one in Awe. But the role never clicked with the audience. In Take Off, the crew was on the look-out for someone who could speak Tamil and I fit in well. And I am glad that the Malayalam audience remember me for the role, despite the few minutes I spent on screen,” says Priyadarshi. Finding cinema and love Armed with a postgraduate in Mass Communication from the University of Hyderabad, Priyadarshi went for acting classes conducted by Aruna Bikshu. He shares, “I was seven when I saw Sagara Sangamam and decided to be an actor. It was a paradigm shift for me. I am a big fan of Kamal Haasan and Chiranjeevi. I saw many films by K. Balachander, K. Vishwanath and Singeetam Srinivasa Rao. Aruna Bikshu taught me how to learn and unlearn, and then I gained experience from short films.” “It was difficult to get into movies in a industry where nepotism rules with just a couple of short films in your kitty. With no definite directions, University was the best place I went to which opened world of theatre to me,” Priyadarshi says. Priyadarshi fell in love with Richa, a writer, who was his senior at the University of Hyderabad and the couple got married in February 2018. Priyadarshi and Richa “Cinema is my life but not my love. I have found the perfect balance of happiness and pragmatism in Richa who is currently busy meeting publishers for her upcoming fictional work," he says. On a path of reinvention, Priyadarshi says that he is happy with the turn of events in life and does not aspire to do multiple things at once. “I am no Superman. And I have learnt it the hard way. As of now, I am in search of stories that come from our hearts and ones that the audiences like to be told. Yes, like Pelli Choopulu,” the actor affirms.

MollywoodMalayalam cinema, more often than not, tends to locate its characters in small towns and narrates stories of ordinary lives.Sowmya RajendranThe Malayalam film industry has produced yet another film that's charmed audiences beyond the state. Lijo Jose Pellissery's Ee.Ma.Yau, a tragicomedy about a son's desire to give his father a grand funeral, has won critical acclaim, and is also doing well at the box-office. Set in Chellanam, a fishing village, the story is about Vavachan and how his death unleashes a series of events. Vavachan is no VIP. He's a drunkard who cheats on his wife and lives in a tiny house. But, to his family, he is important. Especially to his son, Eeshi (Chemban Vinod Jose), who promises his father on that fateful day that he will ensure that the latter is given a memorable send-off – from band to bishop. Vavachan dies a rather unglamorous death – he suffers a cardiac arrest, but not before he slips and falls (thanks to the arrack he's addicted to), hurting his head slightly. What follows is a delightful black comedy about how the entire village responds to the death. The gossip network is so authentically etched that you feel like an eyewitness to the events. Take for example, the way someone enquires who made the duck curry, even as they're all seated as mourners. Or the little 'mala' transaction between Vavachan's daughter-in-law and Karutha Molly. Or the way the priest-detective (inspired by Gk Chesterton's Father Brown?) casually bends to take a look at the head injury of the corpse. The film is entirely set in Chellanam. In fact, most of it is set within the confines of Eeshi's home and front yard. There are no big stars who are part of the cast. Chemban Vinod Jose, Vinayakan, and Dileesh Pothan are the most recognisable names in the film. Unlike other south Indian industries and Bollywood where most films are set in urban areas and revolve around characters who are city-bred, Malayalam cinema continues to set its stories in small towns and villages. Even if the characters may visit cities, they spend a good part of their time in non-metros – as in Eeda or Kammatipaadam. Urban films like Bangalore Days, Mayaanadhi, Njandukalude Naattil Oridavela, Hey Jude or films that are set outside the country like Take Off, do hit the screens once in a while, but a vast majority are about characters who live ordinary lives in small worlds. The conflicts in the plot, too, tend to be small-scale and more involved with human nature than external factors. Take Sudani from Nigeria, for example. The film is about an African soccer player who comes to Malappuram to play in a tournament. But most of the film is set in manager Majeed's (Soubin Shahir) house, because the player, Samuel (Samuel Abiola Robinson), injures his leg and is bedridden. The film explores the complex relationships in Majeed's home – between a hurt son and his caring mother, between a wife and her sensitive second husband, and a resentful stepson and a respectful stepfather. The film could have been set on a much larger canvas but director Zachariah, by keeping it small, gives us an intimate understanding of the characters involved. There is no need to show more when you can achieve what you want with less. Dileesh Pothan's two highly acclaimed films, Maheshinte Prathikaram and Thondimuthalum Driksakshiyum, are also set in small towns and revolve around small problems. Although both films are very culturally rooted – the first in Idukki and the second in Kasargod – they held appeal for audiences across the country. The characters were written so well that it didn't matter if the enamoured audience had never set foot in Kerala, let alone these towns. While films set in rural areas were popular in other industries, the trend slowly shifted to urban areas with changing times. 'Rural' films, if at all they get made, are more likely to be about caste violence (several Tamil films on the subject, like Paruthiveeran, Uriyadi and so on, are set in rural areas) or political vengeance (like a Rangasthalam for example) than explore ordinary lives where nothing greatly dramatic takes place. Films like Oru Kidayin Karunai Manu, for instance, are pretty rare and their reach is quite limited - they seldom release outside the state or the southern region. Perhaps it's because the rural-urban divide in Kerala is not as stark as it is in other states. Perhaps it's because Malayalam cinema is more story-driven than star-driven. Perhaps it's because the budgets are much smaller than what it is in the bigger industries. Perhaps it's a combination of these factors – but whatever it is, the Malayalam industry continues to look towards its small towns and villages for inspiration. In a rapidly shrinking world, the local flavours of its cinema are winning fans among multiplex audiences in other states. Unlike other industries, which are trying to make big budget, pan-Indian films in a bid to grab more eyeballs, Malayalam cinema is managing to do that by simply sticking to its true self.
