“Life in space is impossible,” the opening crawl of Gravity informed us — and every movie about a space station certainly seems to agree. Here’s yet another crew experiencing breakdown and terror in the vacuum. While this one avoids the hoariest clichés (the helpless victim behind sealed doors), it also swerves into action when its very premise seems designed for psychological terror instead.
Kira (Ariana DeBose) is a newcomer to the International Space Station, welcomed aboard by the half-American, half-Russian crew. She’s barely begun her second day when nuclear war breaks out back on Earth. The US commander, Gordon (Chris Messina), and his Russian counterpart, Nicholai (Costa Ronin), are both ordered to secure the station. That could have been the premise for a tragically effective, dramatic thriller, with six scientists trying to figure out whether they can trust one another and re-establish contact with a ruined world. Instead, all hell breaks loose.

What’s a film without distribution? The Popcorn List sets out to make sure that doesn’t happen to the best indies.
Founded by Lela Meadow-Conner and Barbara Twist, the inaugural annual survey spotlights 20 features that debuted at major or regional film festivals this past year and come highly recommended by festival programmers. Nineteen out of the 20 movies have reviews on Letterboxd, despite not yet having theatrical or digital distribution in the U.S. All 20 have won awards — including Audience Awards and Jury Awards — at festivals like Sundance and SXSW.
Billed as being The Black List for undistributed films, the 2024 Popcorn List highlights independent films that are currently still without domestic U.S. distribution, like the documentary “Chasing Chasing Amy” about the making of Kevin Smith’s comedy.
The other 18 are: “Ajoomma,” “American Pot Story: Oaksterdam,” “Art for Everybody,” “Asog,” “Blood Sweat & Beers,” “Caterpillar,” “Citizen Sleuth,” “City of Wind,” “Crows Are White,...

Five years have gone by since Tom Cruise announced that Paramount Pictures had given the greenlight to two more Mission: Impossible movies, with Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation (2015) and Mission: Impossible – Fallout (2018) writer/director Christopher McQuarrie returning to the helm. At one point, we thought these movies were going to carry the titles Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One and Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part Two… but Paramount is backtracking from that decision. After Dead Reckoning Part One underwhelmed at the box office when it was released last year, the studio has dropped Part One from the subtitle and has let it be known that the next film, which is still in production, will have a different title. A decision they really should have made before releasing the first half of the story. At least we’re still getting the second half of the story, with the...

Wendy Williams lived her life as an open book throughout a 37-year career in show business. She never held back on talking about any aspect of its ups and downs, including the difficulties she experienced in her marriage to ex-husband, Kevin Hunter. She once admitted she thought about divorcing Hunter shortly after they were wed, calling him a “serial cheater.”
Wendy Williams questioned Kevin Hunter’s fidelity throughout their marriage
Wendy Williams and Kevin Hunter tied the knot in 1997. She told Business Insider in 2021 that she was planning her divorce from Hunter for almost 20 years.
Williams admits she was ready to divorce Hunter “the second year. Because that’s when I finally got pregnant with [my son] young Kevin and gave birth to him.”
“I went into the delivery room knowing in my mind, ‘I’m planning my divorce,'” she stated. “Kevin was a serial cheat.”
She continued, “He cheated when I dated him.

In the war between prey vs predator, there’s now a new unprecedented threat that’s looming over the human race. It’s none other than the emerging algorithm-driven artificial intelligence (AI) that is taking over the world as we speak. And quite flawlessly, Tom Cruise’s latest Mission Impossible movie touched upon the very aspect.
Tom Cruise in Paramount’s Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One
Coming up with his latest installment in the Mission: Impossible series, Tom Cruise’s 2023 epic Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One, saw Ethan Hunt and the Impossible Missions Force reach its zenith. Diving into the realm of pure sci-fi, Cruise’s movie witnessed the threat imposed by a highly sophisticated artificial intelligence. But despite its authenticity, the seventh sequel seems to be the most underrated installment in Cruise’s series.

[This story contains spoilers from the fourth episode of Feud: Capote vs. the Swans, “It’s Impossible.”]
For Diane Lane, the entire premise of Feud: Capote vs. the Swans is full of complexity and layers.
As the FX series depicts the fallout from Truman Capote’s “La Côte Basque” — a chapter from his unfinished novel, Answered Prayers, that was excerpted in Esquire‘s November 1975 issue that caused a giant rift between the acclaimed writer and his “Swans” — the actress can’t help but notice the irony that she’s playing socialite Slim Keith, one of the Swans that was outraged by Capote’s thinly veiled portrait of the elite milieu in which she was a part. “I imagine them sitting on a sofa, enjoying champagne and popcorn, and having the last laugh on all of us,” says Lane, who laughs at the meta nature of the show’s depictions of the secrets, lies and gossip shared between Keith’s wealthy cohort.

Spanish director J.A. Bayona has gone from prehistoric blockbusters with Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom and mega-budget trips to Mordor with Amazon’s The Rings of Power (he directed the first two episodes). Now, he returns with something a little different. Society of the Snow, a survival thriller about the Uruguayan 1972 Andes flight disaster and based on Pablo Vierci’s book, comes from Netflix and is set to close the 2023 Venice Film Festival out of competition on Saturday. But it also marks the director’s return to his native Spanish language for the first time in 16 years, since his 2007 breakout The Orphanage.
The disaster, which saw a plane of 45 mostly young rugby players from Uruguay crash in the Andes, with only 16 people surviving after 72 days in the snowy environment and after having been forced to take extreme measures — including cannibalism — to stay alive, has been put to screen before (most notably...

Jack of all trades and master of none Teezo Touchdown, whose gaudy style has already eclipsed his scant musical output, doesn’t want to be known as simply a rapper. He fancies himself a radical who doesn’t fit neatly into a predetermined categorical box. This is an artist who thought spitting verses over Panic at the Disco’s “I Write Sins Not Tragedies,” one of the most well-known pop-punk songs of the past decade, on 2019’s “100 Drums” was unique in an era where SoundCloud rappers frequently pay homage to such mid-2000s acts.
To be fair, there’s little to no actual rapping on Teezo’s major label debut, How Do You Sleep at Night? He positions himself as a modern-day pop star in the vein of Prince—as a soulful entertainer who can adopt R&b, pop, and rock sensibilities into his musical repertoire at what feels like the drop of a hat.

J.A. Bayona is taking on the almost-impossible true story of a 1972 plane crash.
The “Impossible” and “Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom” director helms Netflix film “Society of the Snow,” based on Pablo Vierci’s 2008 nonfiction book of the same name. Bayona co-wrote the script with Bernat Vilaplana, Jaime Marques, and Nicolás Casariego.
In 1972, Uruguayan Air Force Flight 571, which had been chartered to fly a rugby team to Chile, crashed in the heart of the Andes. Only 29 of its 45 passengers survived the accident. Trapped in one of the most hostile and inaccessible environments on the planet, they have to resort to extreme measures to stay alive.
The cast includes Enzo Vogrincic, Agustín Pardella, Matías Recalt, Esteban Bigliardi, Diego Vegezzi, Fernando Contigiani García, Esteban Kukuriczka, Rafael Federman, Francisco Romero, Valentino Alonso, Tomás Wolf, Agustín Della Corte, Felipe Otaño, Andy Pruss, Blas Polidori, Felipe Ramusio, and Simón Hempe.

It’s reductive and not quite true to say that this book is what Julia Wertz wanted Drinking at the Movies to be – but it’s a good enough place to start.
Drinking was her first full-length graphic novel after two collections of Fart Party stories; at the time, I thought it was more of a collage that it didn’t quite turn into a single narrative, but was definitely bigger and more ambitious that her previous work. It was also – I shudder to realize – published in 2010, almost fifteen years ago.
Impossible People , Wertz’s big new 2023 book, is her first memoir since Museum of Mistakes in 2018, which mostly collected older work. It’s odd to realize that: I think of Wertz as such an immediate, confessional cartoonist, her work so direct and plain-spoken. But those stories were mostly about that late-Aughts period; she hadn’t made any books about her thirties yet.

A de-aged Tom Cruise wasn’t the only idea scrapped for “Mission: Impossible — Dead Reckoning Part One.”
Christopher McQuarrie, director of this seventh film in the franchise, recently spoke on an Empire Spoiler Special podcast episode (via Slash Film) about how he considered featuring a de-aged Julia Roberts as Impossible Mission Force agent Ethan Hunt’s (Tom Cruise) ill-fated lover in a sequence that would’ve taken place circa 1989. McQuarrie previously told Total Film why he scrapped the sequence altogether, feeling “too distracted by how an actor that I had known for however long was now suddenly this young person.”
Now, as he told Empire, Roberts was part of that sequence in a role eventually played by Mariela Garriga in flashback. Through black-and-white callbacks woven throughout the movie, “Dead Reckoning” shows glimpses into Ethan’s life before he joined the Imf, revealing how Ethan was framed for the death of...

In Mission: Impossible — Dead Reckoning Part One, Tom Cruise and his Impossible Missions Force face off against an all-powerful rogue form of artificial intelligence, known as The Entity, which has the ability to manipulate people, weapons and various defense systems.
In the film, Cruise’s Ethan Hunt and his team of Luther (Ving Rhames), Benji (Simon Pegg), Ilsa Faust (Rebecca Ferguson) and newcomer Grace (Hayley Atwell) try to keep The Entity from falling into the wrong hands, going after various power brokers who want to acquire and control this dangerous technology.
And Dead Reckoning Part One hits theaters at a time of great concern about the real-world threat posed by AI, including in Hollywood, where restrictions around what the technology can and cannot be used for in film and TV are at the heart of ongoing labor disputes between striking writers and actors and the studios and streamers.

Pom Klementieff’s assassin Paris is largely mute throughout the latest instalment of the franchise, flying in the face of more enlightened recent film roles
There are many things wrong with Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One: its ridiculous storyline about AI, its bloated runtime, the plot holes as wide as Tom Cruise’s gleaming megawatt smile, but the most jarring of all? How Pom Klementieff’s supporting role as Paris, a savage assassin, is transformed into the tired stereotype of the silent Asian, who is largely mute throughout the film.
Paris is part of villain Gabriel’s (Esai Morales) crew. She’s on screen for many of the fights and action sequences including a thrilling car chase through the streets of Rome. All kamikaze glee and thigh-crushing aggression, she’s more than capable of giving Cruise’s Impossible Mission Force agent, Ethan Hunt, a run for his money. But the French actor,...

CinemaHere is a list of some of our favourite coming-of-age films made in Telugu in recent years — not just about children or adolescents, but also lost, aimless and confused adults.Screenshots from C/o Kancharapalem, Brochevarevarura and PareshanTelugu cinema has been in the spotlight lately, even more than before, with SS Rajamouli’s Rrr gaining international recognition. Even before the Baahubali films took the country by storm, Telugu action dramas got a new lease of life through their Hindi-dubbed versions on YouTube and TV channels. While these star vehicles and ‘mass entertainers’ gained more visibility, the Telugu film industry has also been producing many films on a smaller scale — slice-of-life films, crime comedies, comedy thrillers, and rom-coms that tell moving stories of ordinary people. This weekend sees only one major new release, but its a big one! One year after Tom Cruise came barreling back to theaters and saved the movie industry as we know it, he is back again to save it from a summer of unexpected box office bombs with Mission: Impossible- Dead Reckoning Part One.
We do have a bit of a leg up on our predictions with this one as it actually opened yesterday where it pulled in around $16 million with $7 million of that coming from Tuesday previews (that number is preliminary for now until official Wednesday numbers are released from the studio.) Tracking right now has the film hitting a little over $90 million for the 5-day haul with about $65 million of that coming on the weekend. Having seen the film and absolutely loving it, combined with stellar reviews (including an impressive 9/10 from our own Chris Bumbray) and strong word of mouth,...

We all know that Mission: Impossible is about Ethan Hunt, the living manifestation of destiny. With mega-star Tom Cruise in the role, the character of Hunt became more important to the franchise than any of the leads of the original series, Jim Phelps, Dan Briggs (Steven Hill), or Cinnamon Carter (Barbara Bain). But for a little while, producers considered phasing Hunt out of the series, making him the new secretary of the Impossible Mission Force while Jeremy Renner’s William Brandt became the new team leader.
Those plans changed midway through the production of Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol when Christopher McQuarrie came in to finish a script started by Josh Appelbaum and André Nemec. Although director Brad Bird had already started shooting scenes for Ghost Protocol, McQuarrie successfully argued that Hunt should remain the focus and could not be replaced.
This behind-the-scenes tension added a spark of electricity between Brandt and Hunt on screen.

With the seventh “Mission: Impossible” blasting into theaters July 12 with “Mission Impossible — Dead Reckoning Part One,” there’s no better time to catch up on the previous entries in the adrenaline-pumping franchise. Based on the 1966 television series of the same name, the films star Tom Cruise as Impossible Missions Force agent Ethan Hunt. Since investigating the mysterious murders of (almost) his entire team back in 1996, Hunt (and Cruise) has certainly been through the wringer ever since, climbing skyscrapers, clinging to the outside of planes, and flying helicopters all in the name of completing his missions and thrilling the audience.
As we eagerly anticipate the impossible missions and death-defying stunts that await Cruise in “Dead Reckoning,” we’ve pulled together a list of streamers where you can find all six of the existing “Mission: Impossible” installments. Can Tom Cruise save summer?
Despite the onslaught of shiny product that hasn’t delivered, i.e. Flash and Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny, the summer domestic box office at $2.1 billion per Comscore is pacing 6% behind last year’s for the period of May 1 to July 9.
All eyes are on the best reviewed Mission: Impossible of all-time, Paramount/Skydance’s Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One to hopefully get us on a July roll starting Wednesday with an expected franchise global 5-day record of $250M; made up of $90M domestic, and $160M abroad in 70 markets including Australia, Brazil, China, France, Germany, Italy, Korea, Mexico Spain, Taiwan, and the United Kingdom.
There is a great potential for upside here, not just because of the Rotten Tomatoes score of 98% certified fresh, but also because a Top Gun: Maverick halo effect is expected to work in the favor of the seventh Mission: Impossible.

Hayley Atwell’s Marvel Cinematic Universe character Peggy Carter was already a high bar to clear, but watching her performance as Grace, a pickpocket who gets roped into the world of Ethan Hunt’s (Tom Cruise) Impossible Missions Force is a worthy successor. Grace has a shadowy backstory but in just the first 10 minutes of her appearance, the audience learns she’s a master of thievery – and that took a lot of training.
“I trained for five months before we began shooting,” Atwell told TheWrap. “In that time, [director] Chris McQuarrie and Tom [Cruise], and Wade Eastwood, our stunt coordinator, would be monitoring my progress to see where my natural skills lay.”
The actress didn’t just have to master sleight of hand to play a pickpocket, but also working with knives and guns, doing unarmed combat, mixed martial arts – and stunt driving. Based on how successful Atwell was at each...

It says a lot about Mission: Impossible — Dead Reckoning Part One, the first chapter in the $3.5 billion franchise’s two-part seventh installment, that detailed footage of one of the film’s most spectacular stunts was released in full online last December. The extended clip showcased the meticulous planning and execution of a sequence in which Tom Cruise as superspy Ethan Hunt drives a motorcycle off a cliff and plunges 4,000 feet into a ravine, separating from the bike and Base jumping the final 500 feet to the ground.
Most action thrillers would save that kind of daredevil money shot for the release, praying that nobody leaked the footage and diminished the awe factor. But director Christopher McQuarrie, in his third turn at the helm, has stuffed the espionage saga so full of breathtaking stunt sequences, visceral fights, gunplay and high-speed chases that there’s loads more to keep his audience glued to every moment.

Modern movies can now be slotted into five distinct categories: Comedies, dramas, horror/sci-fi, superhero films and Tom Cruise. The 61-year-old actor has gone beyond being a marquee-name star to becoming his own movie genre, a sort of one-man blockbuster flavor that borrows liberally from those other types and adds in a special sauce that’s equal parts charisma, salesmanship, daredevil action, nonstop running and teeth. As the industry-saving success of last year’s Top Gun: Maverick reminded us, Cruise is still the closest thing to a sure thing, the...

What do you think of when you think about iconic scenes in movie history? Maybe you think of the “I’ll be back” scene in The Terminator– or maybe it’s the iconic exchange between John McClain and Hans Gruber in Die Hard. But in either case, one cannot mention iconic action movies without paying respects to the vault heist scene in 1996’s Mission: Impossible.
Ethan Hunt (Tom Cruise) is a secret agent for the Impossible Missions Force- he’s up against his biggest threat yet and has nobody to trust except for his few loyal friends. In the scene, Ethan must break into a maximum security vault to steal a floppy disc that could save the day- but of course, it’s never that simple. This scene offers a visual and audible intensity that has yet to be matched in any of the proceeding films to date. Featuring no music,...

Where to begin with this year’s summer preview?
The “big” titles, including new superhero films, another zippy entry into the “Fast and Furious” franchise, the continuing adventures of Tom Cruise running against “Impossible” odds, or even a kicky new Indiana Jones film? What about the latest picks from some of our favorite filmmakers, Wes Anderson to Greta Gerwig, Christopher Nolan to Nicole Holofcener, Paul Schrader to Niki Caro, Christian Petzold to Rachel Sennott?
Or what about the rising filmmaking stars we’ve already fallen for, like Celine Song, Laurel Parmet, Adele Lim, Charlotte Regan, and Savanah Leaf? Should we bet even bigger, noting that this summer includes at least two films we’ve already crowned some of the best of the year?
Or, better yet, how about we let the films speak for themselves? As another summer movie season beckons, we’ve dug into the calendar to pull out...

Exclusive: Lionsgate’s Pilgrim Media Group, which is behind series such as A&e’s upcoming Stone Cold Takes America, has promoted Lauren LeMieux.
LeMieux has been upped to SVP and Head of Development. It’s been a relatively quick rise for former VP LeMieux at the company after a promotion in December 2021.
In her new role, LeMieux will focus on packaging producers and talent with creative concepts, identifying foreign formats for adaptation and opportunities for exploiting internally-developed concepts in foreign markets, and helping to nurture third-party producer and talent relationships.
LeMieux currently oversees a team of creative executives as well as the operations of the development department’s post-production. In addition to creative services, she works side-by-side with production personnel in the field to produce presentations and pilots.
In addition to Stone Cold Takes America, Pilgrim produces Renovation Impossible for HGTV, and David Dobrik’s Dodgeball Thunderdome and Tyson v.

It's still astounding to think about just how much the original "Star Wars" changed filmmaking back in 1977 when George Lucas' sci-fi fantasy adventure serial first hit theaters. Instead of waiting for technology to catch up to his ideas, Lucas surrounded himself with creative minds that managed to invent new, experimental techniques that are still being used today. Visual effects legend John Dykstra worked with a team of engineers to create the first computer-controlled motion camera called the Dykstraflex that made it possible to replicate the same shots over and over again, allowing for seamless overlays of multiple effects elements. The Dykstraflex was the key ingredient that made Lucas' vision of ships dogfighting in space a reality. Out of the need for these kinds of innovations, the legendary effects company Industrial Light & Magic was born.
From the monumental invention of the Dykstraflex to the new StageCraft technology used in "The Mandalorian,...

I’m guessing that a lot of action blockbuster movies aficionados have been thinking that the multiplexes have been pretty quiet this year so far. I mean the second Avatar swam in just before the end of 2022. As usual, the Winter has seen lots of horror thrillers, plus a couple of superheroes swooped in for the latest installment of their respective franchises. Ah, now there’s another franchise that brings a smile to the “big stunt spectacle” film fans. The fellow at the tentpole’s forefront doesn’t have a “tech suit” or a sculpted rubber and cape ensemble. No sir, though his fighting attire is a simple black suit, filled with a massive arsenal. His skill is his “super-power”, as we turn the cinematic page to John Wick: Chapter 4.

Top Gun: Maverick is currently setting records at the box office including becoming the highest global grossing movie of Tom Cruise’s entire movie star career. It’s safe to say it’ll be the movie of the summer. It was even reported that the week of its release, approximately 2 million households in the United States had revisited the 1986 original on streaming platforms.
There will be over 110 minutes of bonus content available for the movie. This includes the making of the stunning aerial sequences of pushing the Darkstar jet past Mach-10, as well as the trench run and dogfights with the F-18 Super Hornets.
Top Gun: Maverick currently sits above the 1 billion mark at the box-office and recently overtook Titanic to be Paramount Studio’s highest grossing movie ever.

Somewhere in a Paramount corner office, executives are putting together their desperate plea to convince Tom Cruise to return for "Top Gun 3." Indeed, that's the only logical response to the truly wild success of "Top Gun: Maverick," which has soared beyond expectations, breezed past box office records, and continues to make a killing as recently as this past weekend when it narrowly missed the number two spot at the box office despite being in its 12th week of release.
