The Oscar race is already underway for categories devoted to below-the-line crafts — cinematography, costume design, editing, makeup and hairstyling, music, production design, sound and visual effects.
Voting began on Feb. 1 to determine a shortlist of possible nominees culled from all eligible contenders in the four craft categories that use a two-step process: score, original song, visual effects and makeup & hairstyling.
Voters have until Feb. 5 to narrow down all the contenders to a shortlist of semifinalists: 15 each in the Best Original Score and Best Original Song categories, 10 each in Best Makeup and Hairstyling and Best Visual Effects. (The shortlists will be announced on Feb. 9 ahead of the March 15 announcement of nominees.)
Here are our thoughts on what might advance in the four below-the-line categories that use shortlists.

Exclusive: UTA has gone all in with Lisa Cortés, and vice versa.
The All In: The Fight For Democracy co-director has signed with the uberagency in all areas, I’ve learned.
Cortés’ new representation comes as the Oscar nominee and Emmy winner finds herself at the center of a vast political shift in the nation. A change in both the White House and the Senate that is thanks in no small part to the battle against voter suppression waged by Stacey Abrams – as chronicled in Cortés and Liz Garbus’ All In acclaimed documentary.
Having opened in theaters in the early fall and premiering on Amazon Prime Video on September 18 last year, All In is a provocative and illuminating examination of the fragility of American democracy, institutional racism and voter suppression. In that sense, timelier the past few months than perhaps almost anyone could have predicted, the documentary is also about...

While Netflix draws so much awards attention each year because of its robust slate of movies from top-tier directors, it was Amazon Prime Video that actually became the first streaming platform to ever win an Oscar for a narrative feature. Back at the 2017 ceremony, Amazon won three Academy Awards — two for “Manchester by the Sea” (Best Actor and Best Original Screenplay) and one for the international feature “The Salesman.” (Netflix won its first Oscar that year for the documentary short “White Helmets.”)
Netflix has dominated the conversation in the years since — last year, the service received 24 Oscar nominations, the most for any studio — but Amazon is back again this season with a major Best Picture contender in “One Night in Miami” and several other potential nominees.
Ahead, the new movies on Amazon Prime Video in January that are serious awards contenders.

Former Georgia gubernatorial candidate Stacey Abrams plays a central role in the documentary All In: The Fight for Democracy, directed by Liz Garbus and Lisa Cortés, but the film from Amazon Studios shouldn’t be construed as “The Stacey Abrams Story.”
The film has a bigger focus in mind, the directors say during Deadline’s Contenders Documentary awards-season event, beyond exploring the Democratic candidate’s narrow loss in 2018 to Republican Brian Kemp, a defeat many attribute to Republican efforts to suppress the minority vote.
“The whole point of this film was that the election in 2018…has been hundreds of years in the making,” Garbus says. “And you can’t understand what happened in that race without understanding our history.”

If you followed the 2020 US election online, you will have noticed that on the day itself one piece of advice was being repeated more than any other: stay in line. After waiting in long queues, many voters were falsely told that the polls had closed and they should just go away. This may not have have been intentionally misleading behaviour from clerks. The fact is that the rules governing elections - which differ from state to state - are complicated and not well understood. There are reasons for that.
A thorough but accessible guide to the history of voting in the US and what that history means for the electorate today, All In is a film for everybody who grew up hearing the phrase one man one vote and wondered what happened to everybody else, or reflected on the past and recognised that 'man' has itself always been a contested.

A version of this story about “All In: The Fight for Democracy” first appeared in the Documentaries issue of TheWrap’s Oscar magazine.
“All In: The Fight for Democracy” is a wide-ranging documentary that tracks the history of voter suppression in the United States — but the presidential election made the film by Liz Garbus and Lisa Cortes seem both timely and prescient. “All In” may span more than a century of efforts to disenfranchise Black voters, but it focuses on Stacey Abrams’ unsuccessful 2018 campaign for governor of Georgia and her subsequent efforts to reform voting inequities, which may have played a role in the state flipping blue and voting for Joe Biden in November.
You knew that Stacey Abrams was a force of nature and that the issue of voter suppression is crucially important. But could you have imagined that she would turn out to be such a rock star in the election,...

No more grieving. When The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills started filming a new season in October, for the first time in three years, Teddi Mellencamp wasn't in attendance. Now, she's opening up about life post-reality TV. "I'm enjoying not being part of the drama," the accountability coach revealed on the Friday, Dec. 18 episode of Daily Pop. As Rhobh fans surely recall, Teddi announced her departure from the show on Sept. 22, right as season 10 was coming to an end and she was facing controversy for her All In by Teddi diet program. At the time, she took to Instagram Stories to address her exit. "I...

These days, the political documentary “All In: The Fight for Democracy” might well be known as the Stacey Abrams movie. That’s partly because the politician and activist was such a galvanizing figure in the 2020 presidential race in Georgia, working to boost minority participation and fight voter suppression, and in the process helping to deliver the White House to Joe Biden by turning her state blue for the first time in decades.
In the aftermath of the election, any movie featuring Abrams might suddenly become a hot property. But “All In” would have felt like a Stacey Abrams movie regardless of what happened on Nov. 3. In Liz Garbus and Lisa Cortés’ sobering, wide-ranging documentary, she’s both an articulate guide to how tactics have been used for decades to limit Black access to the polls, and an example of suppression in action through footage of her unsuccessful 2018 run for governor.

Perhaps no documentary is more timely — purposefully — this year than “All In: The Fight for Democracy.” The Amazon film, which was released in September, spotlights voter suppression, weaving together historical context, personal stories and current sagas, including Stacey Abrams’ notorious loss in Georgia’s 2018 gubernatorial race, to drill home that the fight to preserve the right to vote is never truly over.
“We started to talk to some other folks in the film [about] this concept of how the past is prologue to this present moment that we find ourselves in, and that in order to understand what happened to Stacey Abrams in Georgia in 2018, one had to understand the deeper history,” Lisa Cortés, who co-directed “All In” with Liz Garbus, said during Gold Derby’s Meet the Btl Experts: Film Documentary panel (watch above). “A lot of time was spent looking at the architecture of voter suppression and the analogies...

In the final days of the American presidential election, terms like “chart-throb” and “razor-thin” were ubiquitous. So was “Georgia” and “Stacey Abrams.” After her 2018 gubernatorial race in that state, the voting rights activist emerged as the nation’s strongest voice against voter suppression. Those efforts became the centerpiece of “All In: The Fight for Democracy,” a documentary directed by Liz Garbus and Lisa Cortés that Amazon released this fall. At the time, Abrams explained to IndieWire why she was furious with the state of voter suppression in America and how the gutting of the Voter Rights Act impacted the electoral process.
Now, even as President-elect Joe Biden seems likely to triumph in Georgia, the state is poised to consume headlines about its upcoming elections for weeks to come. IndieWire got on the phone with “All In” directors Garbus and Cortés to get their insight into the latest coda to their movie.

Georgia politician Stacey Abrams is “the cat’s pajamas … one of the great females on the planet and somebody who has our best interests at heart.” That’s according to Whoopi Goldberg, who interviewed Abrams about the documentary “All In: The Fight for Democracy,” which screened at the 2020 New York Film Festival and is available to watch on Amazon Prime. Watch their in-depth chat above.
Abrams rose to national prominence when she ran for governor of Georgia in 2018. She was up against Brian Kemp, who was not only her opponent but the secretary of state in charge of overseeing the election he was running in. Kemp won by a narrow margin amid allegations that he had used his power to suppress Black votes in the state, and since then Abrams has been an outspoken advocate for voting rights.

It’s not hyperbolic to say the upcoming US Presidential Election is one of the most important in modern history. With the stakes raised so high, the importance of voting for every eligible citizen in the country is crucial. And with that in mind, for tomorrow’s National Voter Registration Day, Amazon has decided to take one of its most anticipated documentaries of the year, “All In,” and give it away for free.

Last night, the 72nd Primetime Emmy Awards were held, obviously under much different circumstances than normal. Conducted virtually, it was a sign of the Covid-19 times, but more or less went off without a hitch. Plus, as a general rule, people seem rather pleased with the winners. There was Schitt’s Creek pulling a sweep and becoming the first ever series to win every major comedy award in a year, including of course Best Comedy Series. There was Succession taking Best Drama Series, while Watchmen expectedly dominated the Best Limited Series field. Plus, there were even surprises, like Zendaya pulling an upset win for Best Actress in a Drama Series (for Euphoria). Overall, it seemed like a night of celebrations, which we’ve definitely needed in a big way… Here are all of your Emmy winners for 2020: Drama Series “Better Call Saul” (AMC) “The Crown” (Netflix) “The Handmaid’s Tale” (Hulu...

Are you beloved CBC comedy Schitt’s Creek? Well then congrats, my friend, because you just had a hell of a night at the 2020 Emmy Awards!
Domination was the name of the game for the 72nd annual Emmy Awards, with only a handful of shows claiming the lion’s share of trophies in their respective genres. But among those dominant performers, no series was more overpowering than Schitt’s Creek in its final season. The Eugene and Dan Levy-created series went an astonishing seven-for-seven, winning in every category it was nominated in (becoming the first show ever to do so). This included all four acting categories, one writing category, one directing category, and the big one: Outstanding Comedy Series.

After a most unconventional awards season, the Emmys finally took place on Sunday. The 72nd Primetime Emmy Awards was a night of numerous firsts.
“Schitt’s Creek” became the first series to win every major comedy award. “Watchmen’s” limited series win marked the first time a comic-book adaptation has taken home a top prize at the ceremony. Zendaya also made history with her win for lead drama actress, becoming the youngest-ever winner in the category (she turned 24 a few weeks ago) and being the first Black actor to take this trophy since “How to Get Away With Murder’s” Viola Davis in 2015.
The two series, along with “Succession,” dominated the comedy, limited series and drama fields, respectively, including nabbing the three top outstanding series trophies.
The show, hosted by Jimmy Kimmel, was held virtually for the first time.

Janelle Monáe has been gerrymandered. Back when Atlanta’s Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms was running for office in 2017, last-minute changes to where she qualified to vote kept her from casting a ballot for Bottoms. Stacey Abrams’ widely contested gubernatorial race against Brian Kemp a year later proved triggering for Monáe as 300,000 Georgians were incorrectly deemed ineligible to vote.

As the world seems like it is aflame with a pandemic, divisive rhetoric from an oppressive administration and the unjust killing of Black lives at the hands of police officers, hope seems dim. However, there are voices and role models in the world that are fighting for change and on the frontlines fighting against 45, his henchmen and ardent supporters. Enter Stacey Abrams who is essentially the star of the Liz Garbus and Lisa Cortés documentary All In: The Fight For Democracy, which debuts in theaters on September 9 and then on September 18 on Amazon Prime Video — just four days before National Voter Registration Day.

Here’s a startling statistic for you. In Mississippi, at the height of the Reconstruction era (which lasted until 1877), African-American voter registration stood at 67 percent. A century later, after America had defeated the Nazis and was being held up as a beacon of freedom, African-American voter registration in Mississippi stood at just three percent.
How could that have happened? Many factors, but a key one was domestic racial terrorism. In “All In: The Fight for Democracy,” a powerfully timely and absorbing documentary about voter suppression and the ongoing battle against it, the author and professor Carol Anderson tells the story of Maceo Snipes, who fought the fascists during World War II and felt like he’d earned some democracy for himself. He wasn’t intimidated by threats against the lives of African-Americans in his native Georgia; he had just come back from a war. So in 1946, he voted — and was...

“It’s very minimal; it’s very organic,” explains Saunder Jurriaans about the score that he composes with Danny Bensi for “Ozark.” He continues in their exclusive interview with Gold Derby about the Netflix drama (watch the video above), “Even though we do use a lot of synths, most of them are processed, natural sounds that are run through synthesizers or run through effects and then the synths we do use are very analog, warming-sound tactile sounds and then the percussion is all very dry and real-sounding and it’s all played and none of it is looped. Then you have the strings and all the acoustic instruments that are played are recorded very close and you can hear the bows on the strings and the breath in a woodwind.”

MSNBC has canceled “Saturday Night Politics With Donny Deutsch” after a 13-episode summer run.
The show first premiered in May and ran just shy of four months, with its final episode airing on Aug. 17. MSNBC will fill the hourlong Saturday slot with reruns of Chris Hayes’s weeknight show, “All In.” Meanwhile, Deutsch will still make appearances on the network’s “Morning Joe” and “Deadline White House” shows, Deutsch tweeted on Thursday.
“Saturday Night Politics” marks Deutsch’s fifth canceled TV hosting gig. Prior to his MSNBC show, Deutsch played a comedic version of himself on USA’s “Donny!” until 2016, hosted CNN’s “(Get to) The Point” for a week in 2013, and led CNBC’s “The Big Idea With Donny Deutsch” from 2004-2008. He also briefly hosted MSNBC’s “America the Angry” in 2010 but was pulled from the air following a segment criticizing the political and sports commentator Keith Olbermann.

Donny Deutsch has ended his Saturday night MSNBC show, but the network says it was not canceled but rather always was intended as a limited-run summer series.
In fact, the host and MSNBC said Saturday Night Politics with Donny Deutsch was the highest-rated regularly scheduled program in the 8 p.m. Et Saturday slot in the network’s 23-year history.. MSNBC said it averaged just over 800,000 viewers, and it has described the show as an experiment until it can determine what it wants to do on weekends.
While the show beat CNN Newsroom during its run, Fox News’ Watters World Saturday Night averaged 1.69 million viewers, according to Nielsen Media Research. In the 25-54 demographic, Deutsch’s show was third, with about 101,000 viewers to 156,000 for CNN and 209,000 for Fox News.
Starting this weekend, Saturday Night Politics will be replaced by a rerun of All In with Chris Hayes from a night earlier.

When it was revealed earlier this year that Arrow will end its impressive run following its eighth season, I’m sure I wasn’t the only devoted fan who felt like they’d been punched in the gut. Then again, we knew such an announcement would arrive at some point because no TV show lasts forever. Hey, even The Simpsons and Law & Order: Special Victims Unit are eventually going to have to call it quits.
Though the Arrowverse itself will live on thanks to sister series such as The Flash, Supergirl, Legends of Tomorrow and Batwoman, we’ll soon have to say goodbye to the progenitor. Let’s be honest, the rigors of a show like Arrow will take its toll on any actor – especially if you’re Stephen Amell and are capable of doing your own stunts, fight scenes and parkour.
That said, we need no longer speculate...
