"Malibu" is a more recent song by American recording artist Miley Cyrus and these slightly under 4 minutes we have here the music video. It is as minimalistic as it gets, both song and video and very different compared to stuff like "Wrecking Ball" or "party in the USA". Seems like the wild chick in her mid-20s now has calmed down a bit as we basically from start to finish see Diane Martel direct Cyrus in the grass here, at the shore running around, walking slowly and just having a relaxed time overall. The lyrics are also fairly simple and do not offer too much depth. I am not cure if Miss Cyrus, soon Mrs. Hemsworth perhaps, has a connection with Malibu or the state of California as she is from tennessee herself or why she is making a song about Malibu. It can't be just because it rhymes with "next to you" and "sky's so blue" can it? Anyway, I like Cyrus and I can somewhat enjoy this song and video at times, but just not enough for a positive recommendation. It's also nowhere near her best works in my opinion and not half as chill as it wants to be. i am just not sure if slow ballads are the thing for Chica Cyrus, she is so wild and powerful. Well, the long aaaaaah sequence I am not sure about either, it could have been really soothing, but somehow it is not working, even if they were trying to emphasize this calm, relaxing atmosphere with the pictures from start to finish. But cyrus has too much fire for that, maybe more landscape and less Cyrus would have been better visually. I love looking at her, don't get me wrong, but yeah her energy makes it difficult for the video to make an impact on the quiet and calm scale. Overall, I sadly must give this one a thumbs-down. Still i think it's better than 90% of the other pop songs currently rocking the charts, even if it was "only" a top10 hit in America and even lower in most other countries, well except Belgium they loved it and it made number one for whatever reason. Too high. Listen to something else instead, even if listening to this one while watching the video is probably a better choice than just listening to it . The visual side is superior here compared to the audio.
