Maverick, but brilliant, third-year Atlanta top hospital resident Conrad Hawkins is the only one who dares and can stand up to its outdated but super-prestigious chief of surgery, Dr. Randolph Bell, who steals credit routinely and covers up the grossest errors as he brings in huge donations and makes or breaks medical careers. Harvard graduate, newbie intern Devon Pravesh's first impression of mentor Hawkins is 'get me another now', but nurse Nicolette 'Nic' Nevin convinces him her pranked lover Conrad is the man who heals patients no matter what it takes and teaches apprentices how. After some hazing-testing, Devon is pushed -not gently- to take charge of a patient with dismal prospects, whom he pulls through with heroic unrelenting reanimation effort, only to hear from Conrad and Nic that he effectively condemned her to a vegetative state and her family to pointless waiting and agony while the hospital cashes their money.
